2002 Sea Ice Webcam Time-lapse in Barrow, Alaska

01:44
This is a time-lapse of the web cam located North of Barrow, AK at NARL, overlooking landfast ice in the Arctic Ocean (Chukchi Sea). One photo per day, spanning the entire annual cycle including sea ice drift and growth (October), and decay (May/June), and break-up (July). Note that young ice formed on October 16 sheltered by ice drifting in day before. A good part of the landfast ice broke out around March 19; while it is common for ice to break out before summer, usually it does not happen this close to the shore as there tend to be grounded pressure ridges to protect it. Melt ponds formed around May 21, 2002, which is comparatively early at this location; they refreeze and get covered by snow later in May. Time-lapse spans September 2001 until August 2002. The camera is located atop the UIC Science Center at NARRL, 5 miles NE of Barrow, facing approximately NW. See http://www.gi.alaska.edu/snowice/sea-lake-ice/barrow_webcam.html for today's sea ice webcam image in downtown Barrow.

Q-learning: car driving narrow track

03:21
A simple, model-free Q-Learning, reinforcement learning agent navigating a car on a track. Code for example (4) is available here: https://github.com/cpetrich/q-learning-car The purpose of this exercise was to test whether/how the agent would follow the track given only coarse sensory information. The agent has been trained on tracks different from the one shown (track shown: length: 800 m, width: 4 m, curve radii: 5.2 to 24 m.). Training tracks included: (a) oval tracks with aspect ratio 10:1, (b) elliptical circuits, (c) pentagon to nonagon tracks. Tracks of type (b) and (c) had curve radii between 15 and 35 m and track widths of 3.8 to 5.0 m. Tracks of type (a) were 7.6 to 10 m wide with 400 m long straight segments. Q values are stored in a table for the set of discrete states and actions. Possible actions are any combination of speed change and wheel rotation: speed-up one step (+), speed-down one step (-), maintain speed (.), turn wheel more left (<), turn wheel more right (>), leave wheel as-is (|). The state of the learning agent is the combination of: speed (-0.1, 0, 0.1, 0.3, 1.0, or 3.0 m per time step), nominal wheel direction (-35, -20, -10, -5, -2.5, 0, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 35 degrees), a flag indicating whether the track turns left/right/neither at any point within the next 30 m (with respect to the current orientation of the car), clearance rear, left, right (<0.1 m, <0.3 m, ≥0.3 m) and front (<0.1 m, <0.3 m, <1 m, <2 m, <3 m, <10 m, ≥10 m). Rewards given are inversely proportional to speed (note: all rewards are negative), or -3000 in case of collision with the track boundaries. The discrete state is illustrated by a sketch (e.g., yellow zones are unobstructed areas), and the table shows the Q-values associated with the possible actions in the current state. Actions are chosen based on a greedy policy.

Coastal RADAR in Barrow, Alaska -- by Miho Aoki

00:36
This animation by Miho Aoki (University of Alaska Fairbanks) shows the relationship between web cam, town layout, satellite images, and coastal RADAR in Barrow, Alaska, in 2007. The RADAR shows ice drifting to the North and a dislodging (break-out) event that formed an edge in April. Ice attaching to this edge later in April and May (not shown in this animation) is easily dislodged later during storms. As a consequence, the same ice edge can be seen two months later, in the satellite image taken during the period of coastal ice break-up. Note that the webcam image is of May (sea ice covers the Chukchi Sea, is snow-covered and white), the satellite image is from early June (blue patches are meltwater ponds from melting snow at the surface), and the RADAR animation is of March/April. Up-to-date measurements are available online. This animation is part of the DVD accompanying the book "Field Techniques for Sea Ice Research" by Eicken et al. (eds), 2010, and is disseminated here with permission.
