Dreamweaver Tutorial 4: Tag, Class, and ID Selectors in CSS

07:00
In this tutorial I describe the difference between tag selectors, class selectors, and ID selectors in CSS. Using an HTML example in Dreamweaver, I show how CSS style selectors of different types can be used and when they should be used. A tag selector is used to change all instances of a particular tag, such as all p tags. Class selectors allow you to change some, but not all instances of a tag. An ID selector is used for unique elements and should only be used on one tag in the entire HTML document. Examples of using each type of selector is given. The syntax of each type of selector is described. For tag selectors the name of the tag is used to represent the CSS rule. For class selectors a period is used followed by a name. For ID selectors a pound sign is used followed by a name. HTML tags automatically apply to the HTML document. However, class and ID selectors must be applied to individual HTML tags in order for the styles to apply.

CSS pseudo-element: first-child last-child

03:32
These CSS pseudo-elements will select the first or last of any HTML element. first-chile and last-child will then apply some sort of CSS to them. The one requirement is that they be a inside some other HTML element, which everything practically is. In this video I change the background color of list items, lists, and a div. psuedo-elements are called such because they are a part of cascading style sheets that act a lot like HTML elements. http://www.technoblogical.com/web-design/ Providing training since last Tuesday http://www.technoblogical.com Thanks for watching!

HTML5 Basics - Display Types (Part5)

07:06
In this video we are going to talk about something inherent to html tags: display types. Display types define how the tags behave when rendered by the browser. We can use Style Sheets to change these at any time, but each tag has a default behavior and its important to understand how they will work when you are describing your page when writing the initial markup. Got that? # Three Types There are a lot, but we are going to concern ourselves with three main display styles. # Block Block level elements are big blocks, just like they sound. They are generally used to divide content, because by default block level elements begin on new lines. Block-level elements may contain inline elements and other block-level elements. Inherent in this structural distinction is the idea that block elements create "larger" structures than inline elements. An example is a "p" tag, that sections off the whole paragraph, and forces the next paragraph tag to a new line. Check out the notes below for a link to a list of all the block level tags in HTML. [https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/HTML/Block-level_elements] # Inline Inline elements may contain only data and other inline elements. Where block level elements are larger structures that contain all kinds a crap. By default, inline elements do not begin with new line when rendered by the browser. An example of this would be to wrap some words in your paragraph in an "a" tag. the words become a link, but the link does not start a new line in the paragraph, or disrupt the flow of content. It just sits inline in the paragraph. When we get to styling our document, we will note that inline elements cannot take width, height, margin and padding styles. For more on that check out this link [http://www.maxdesign.com.au/articles/inline/] # Inline-block This is the strange, but handy one. An inline block is placed inline (ie. on the same line as adjacent content), but it behaves as a block. So it can take those margins and paddings and dimensions. The only tags that default to inline-block are images and buttons. But with css, later on we will see that we can change any element to inline-block if we want to. Check out the link below for more information on inline-block [http://www.impressivewebs.com/inline-block/] # Display None & Table and others... There are other default display types that all have their little display behavior quirks; like display:table, or display:none. And there are a lot of interesting display methods on the horizon in css3, but today we wanted to just talk about how the html tags cary certain display types by default.

CSS how to: padding

05:18
This video shows how to use the padding property in CSS. This allows you control how much space appears between the edge of your HTML element and the content it contains. You can make all sides equal or you can make individual sides have different padding sizes. You can use the specific properties of padding-right, padding-left, padding-top, or padding-bottom, but the padding property can do all four at once. If you specify one measurement, it affects all sides. If you use two numbers, it'll pad top and bottom on the first number and second number does the sides. If you state four numbers in the CSS property all sides are affected in the order of top, right, bottom, and left. So they start at the top and go in a clockwise fashion. CSS padding is the opposite of margin. Padding puts space inside the element. Margin puts space outside the element's border. http://www.technoblogical.com/web-design/ Providing training since last Tuesday http://www.technoblogical.com Thanks for watching!

Web Development tutorial for Beginners Lesson 3. In this lesson, we'll cover CSS layouts for beginners, how to build hand coded CSS layouts, and some more intermediate CSS concepts. We'll be building a CSS navigation, using CSS floats, and creating a multi-column CSS layout. A helpful tool in doing web development is the Emmet plugin for Sublime Text. To install it, you'll need Sublime Package Manager (https://sublime.wbond.net/installation). Once package manager is installed, install Emmet by hitting Tools / Command Pallette, then type "package control: install package" and choose Emmet. As you can see in this video, there aren't an infinite amount of css rules. The most commonly used ones are: margin (spacing outside your html element) padding (spacing inside your html element) background (for color or image background) color (font color) display (block, inline, inline-block, none) border-radius (rounded edges) float (float left or right) ** You'll notice I didn't have the correct .row:after code, here it is, it needed content ** .row:after { clear: both; content: " "; display: table; } If you missed videos #1 and #2, here they are: Lesson #1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JluqTojuME Lesson #2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBi8Obib0tw Learn Javascript with the Javascript tutorials for beginners: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGdd9qNwQdQ&list=PLoYCgNOIyGACnrXwo5HMCfOH9VT05znGv

How to Insert Line Break in CSS

00:45
In this tutorial we will see how to apply CSS line breaks in web pages. Don't forget to check out our site http://howtech.tv/ for more free how-to videos! http://youtube.com/ithowtovids - our feed http://www.facebook.com/howtechtv - join us on facebook https://plus.google.com/103440382717658277879 - our group in Google+ Apart from text editors or documentation applications, breaking line is not as straight-forward in web pages, as a piece of code is required in the source code for this purpose. The methodology used for this is called "Line Break". Follow this step by step easy tutorial to learn how to apply line breaks in CSS and see how to use span tag. Step 1 - Text within Span tags First of all, open up the paragraph tag first. After that, let's open up the Span tag and insert some text in it. With that done, let's close the Span tag and repeat the process so that we have two lines being displayed on the page. The code for that would be: 'span'This is some Text'/span''span'This text is required on Next Line'/span' Step 2 - Defining the Span Class With that done, let's close the paragraph tag and open up the style tag before the body tag, Now let us define the functionality of the span tag so that it is displayed as a block-level element. Line break in CSS is done by specifying a display style of element as block, which means that whatever element or text comes in between the span class, it will display that as a separate block, which will be interpreted as line break in viewing. The code will be: 'style' p span { display: block; } '/style' Step 3 - Line Break between texts It can be observed that line break has appeared between the Lines. This is actually because of that span class which has been discussed in detail in previous step. And this is how we can use css line break.
