Oder genauer: Die Tricks, die Sendeanstalten benutzen, um möglichst viel versteckte Werbung an den Zuschauer zu bringen. Man erinnert sich vielleicht an die Transformers- Filme, die immer in der Kritik standen, schamlos Geld zu kassieren für dargestellte Automarken oder andere Franchise-Symbole. So ähnlich ist es auch im deutschen Fernsehen. Da wird zum Beispiel der Bachelor, die Bachelorette oder Bachelor in Paradise von dem gleichen Eierlikör- Schnaps gesponsert, der dann nicht nur vor der Sendung in plumper Werbung angekündigt wird, sondern auch pausenlos von allen Kandidaten gesoffen wird. Und das machen die nicht freiwillig - wir haben das mal nach Arbeitsschluss probiert und haben immer noch Kopfschmerzen. Gleiches zum Beispiel auch bei “Lets Dance”, wo der Film “Die Schöne und das Biest” einen ganzen Tanz in die Sendung geschummelt hat, um den Kinostart zu bewerben. Man kennt das noch von “Wetten, Dass?” - auch dort haben Musicals oft Nummern aus ihrer Show auf den besten Sendeplatz gehievt.Das Ganze läuft natürlich nicht ohne Regulierung- aber wo eine Norm, da ist meistens auch ein Schlupfloch. So bezeichnen manche Sendeanstalten das Wetter als eigenständige Nachrichtensendung, um zwischen Nachrichten und Wetter nochmal Werbung schalten dürfen. Auch kann man den Slogan “Dauerwerbesendung” benutzen oder andere Tricks - und wenn es um Geld geht, kann sogar RTL kreativ werden!

Netflix ist das Fernsehen der Zukunft, ohne einen Fernseher zu benötigen. Der Streaming-Dienst ist weltweit extrem erfolgreich und bricht jedes Jahr weitere Rekorde. Die Nutzer fühlen sich wohl mit dem Anbieter. Sie lehnen sich zurück und übersehen so vielleicht sogar die absurde Menge an Produktplatzierungen, die Netflix in ihre Serien und Filme zwängt. Und zwar nicht, wie es das Fernsehen macht: DIe Serie wird nicht unterbrochen von Werbung, die Werbung wird nicht in einem Splitscreen angezeigt, sondern die Produkte werden in die Handlung eingebaut. Ganze Handlungsstränge werden hier fingiert, um ein bestimmtes Produkt zu bewerben. So wird die Serie nicht unterbrochen, die Zuschauer sind nicht genervt und merken oft noch nicht einmal, dass sie gerade Schleichwerbung zum Opfer gefallen sind- obwohl manche Produkte einfach schamlos in die Kamera gehalten werden. Ob Oreo-Kekse, Getränke oder die Taxi-App Uber: Netflix hat keine Scham, den Nutzer mit Schleichwerbung vollkommen zu zu kleistern. Mit System! Die Firma “BEN” ist für all diese Werbung verantwortlich. Sie schauen oft schon Jahre im Voraus, bei welchen Serien man welche Werbung platzieren kann - bei Stranger Things zum Beispiel eine Keks- Waffel, die dann sogar im Merch auftauchte. Mithilfe einer Webseite kann hier sogar jedermann, wenn er das Geld hat, sich eine zukünftige Serie zum Bewerben aussuchen- auch wenn diese noch nicht mal geschrieben ist! Das ist ein gewaltiger Stress für den jeweiligen Autor- er muss nun auch Produkte berücksichtigen - nicht nur den Plot und die Charaktere. Lohnen tut sich das auf jeden Fall - für Netflix - immens.

Product placement stands out as a marketing strategy because it is the most direct attempt to derive commercial benefit from "the context and environment within which the product is displayed or used". The technique can be beneficial for viewers, since interruptive advertising removes them from the entertainment. In April 2006, Broadcasting & Cable reported, "Two thirds of advertisers employ 'branded entertainment'—product placement, brand integration—with the vast majority of that (80%) in commercial TV programming." It said, "Reasons for using in-show plugs varied from 'stronger emotional connection' to better dovetailing with relevant content, to targeting a specific group." According to PQ Media, a consulting firm that tracks alternative media spending, 2014 product placement expenditures were estimated at $10.58 billion, rising 13.6% year-over-year and global branded entertainment growth is now at $73.27 billion. The firm noted that brand marketers are seeking improved methods to engage younger audiences used to ad-skipping and on-demand media usage, and branded entertainment provides omnichannel possibilities to more effectively engage post-boomers, particularly Millennials and iGens. A major growth driver is the increasing use of digital video recorders (DVR), which enable viewers to skip advertisements that interrupt a show.

Content Marketing AND..Product Placement
Ah, product placements. Amazing marketing elements that has led to unnatural dialog and awkward scenes in some of your favorite movies. I had no idea what a product placement was as a young boy, I just found myself craving Reece Pieces after watching E.T. lured into Elliot’s bedroom with candy (that’s called kidnapping by the way). I wasn’t the only one. After the movie captured the hearts of everyone around the world in the early 80’s, Reece’s saw a 65% increase in sales. This was just one of many films that saw truly great results from product placement. When Tom Cruise felt the need for speed in Top Gun and sported aviators, sales increased over 40%. Hell, even the number of men enlisting in the Academy was up over 500%! This wasn’t even the first time Jerry Maguire helped a company’s bottom line. A few years’ prior Mr. Cruise slid across his parent’s floor in his underwear with a white shirt and…Ray Ban sunglasses, which resulted in 360,000 pairs sold across America. Just to complete the sunglasses hat-trick Ray Ban saw similar results when Will Smith was off fighting the scum of the universe in Men in Black with an estimated 5x revenue boost for the company. Fun fact, the brand didn’t even have a logo or a brand mention during the entire film, however, Will Smith managed to fit it in his theme song for the movie. What do all of the examples above have in common? Actually 2 things. 1. They are all great movies. Not only a personal opinion, reviews would agree. 2. Each product featured in the movies had incredible results for the brands. For every great product placement, there are about 30 awful examples that both diminish the piece of content (the movie) and hurt the brand its self. In 2012 the reboot of Spider-Man, the tech world was in an uproar when Peter Parker used a Bing search instead of the more acceptable Google, citing that it was unrealistic for a millennial genius to use Bing (you know they actually own a 20% search market share). Michael Bay’s fourth installment of the Transformers franchise received an outpour of criticism as he managed to fit in 55 separate brands into the movie. 55. Let that sink in. Not that the producers of the movie cared much, Transformers 4 made over one billion in dollars at the box-office, a staggering number when you consider the movie was completely torn apart by the critics. The brands also suffered, despite the first movie generating big numbers for GM the latest installment was so crowded with brands, no one could stand out and brand recognition was almost impossible and incredibly annoying to the viewers. Forget the fact that the movie was a box office success, it was a pretty bad movie. Read the reviews and you will see this was universally considered a piece of garbage. So what is the key to success? Well, this is where we have to take off our movie business hats and start looking at it from a content quality POV. The key is making the products fit in naturally within the story, let’s go back to E.T. Steven Spielberg was not tasked with fitting Reece Pieces into his script, the plot point was just there to enhance the story and it made perfect sense to insert a brand. Aviators were what pilots wore when they flew (hence the name) so once again, it made sense. James Bond is an over-the-top cool spy so of course he would drive a luxury car and would any doubt that the Dodge Charger is a perfect fit for Vin Diesel’s character in the Fast and Furious franchise? Toy Story is an enchanting movie about the life of toys, of course there are well-known toys in the movie…it makes sense. So when sponsoring a piece of content or creating an original piece for part of a brand make your product or service fit into the story, not the other way around. This will keep the content quality high, engage the audience and if done correctly, will result in positive reaction to your own product or service.
