On Sunday, May 21st, 2017 was the 2nd Annual Seoul Africa Festival held in Seoul, South Korea. This year, a new event was added--the African Fashion Show, a display of traditional and modern pieces from around the continent, modeled by the beautiful people of those countries. The festival had information about various countries, cultures, and people of Africa, from non-profit organizations to African vendors based in Korea to a number of African embassies. There were dance, music, and story-telling performances as well. This video is how I personally experienced the festival! It was great to see so many African kings and queens grace the space, and seeing Koreans and people of all cultures embrace Mama Africa! For the fashion show, skip ahead to the 2:42 mark. -------------------------------------------------------------------- For more about my life in Korea, SUBSCRIBE!! Following last week's episode, we are joined by another mastermind from the 'Bring On The Sunshine' African Festival. This week we talk to BOTS co-founder and Festival Director, Alice Penny.Alice grew up in Zimbabwe and came to America when she was just 18. She talks about her experience coming to the US as a young African girl, and what it meant to her at that time. Alice later moved to Canada and talked about her transition and being exposed to a more diverse community. That’s how she met Jacqui Terry-Carroll, a woman who also grew up in Zimbabwe, when they both worked for Christian Horizons. With similar interests and the same cultural background, Alice and Jacqui quickly became friends! They began discussing ideas on what they could do to make children of African descent connect and be proud of their heritage. That’s how the ‘Bring On The Sunshine’ Festival began -- with an idea anchored to celebrating their cultural identity. For Alice, the ‘Bring On The Sunshine’ African Festival is “the world she wants to live in - a place where everyone is free to share ideas in a space of love and celebration. BOTS has become an annual event attended by thousands of people, and it continues to grow every year. This unique festival celebrates African heritage through music, arts, fashion, dancing, food and culture. Alice has been involved in every aspect of BOTS since its conception - from ideas for the festival, to doing admin and finances. More recently, she’s taken on more of a mentorship role for the BOTS team. BOTS is purely volunteer drive, and increasingly young people are stepping up to help with running the festival. In our interview, Alice talks about how the passion and volunteering of young people is what is at the heart of BOTS success."If you're absolutely genuine about what you are offering, people sense that. People feel that, if you're coming from a good place." - Alice PennyWhat started as an idea to bring a small group of friends together to celebrate their African heritage has now become a large-scale annual community event with a mission and purpose. Not only is BOTS a successful annual festival, but the team is working on several expansion initiatives. Join us to hear Alice’s story, and her dreams for the future of BOTS and herself. IN THIS EPISODE: - Alice’s experience as a young African woman moving to the US at 18 - How she met BOTS co-founder Jacqui Terry-Carroll - How the idea of ‘Bring On The Sunshine’ Festival was born - Her role in BOTS and the work she does - Her biggest challenges in running the festival - How the success of BOTS is purely passion and volunteer driven - Her strategies of helping the youth understand their history and heritage as Africans - Her dreams for BOTS and herself - And much more! The International African Arts Festival began in 1971 as the African Street Carnival, a PTA’s block party fundraiser for an independent school in Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn with local entertainers, about 20 arts and crafts vendors, along with food prepared by the parents. Almost 2,000 people came to the event and it was a success. The International African Arts Festival (IAAF) has been part of the Brooklyn’s cultural landscape for 40 years. Each year a committed team of Board members, consultants, part-time seasonal staff and volunteers, work together to transform a city park into an outdoor African cultural oasis that celebrates traditional and contemporary expression of various African cultural art forms.

The First African Fashion and Art Festival will be held in Lagos, Nigeria. “The greatest African cultural show on earth” in the 21st century, AFAF ‘16 will be “an extraordinary demonstration of the richness, diversity, and vitality of black art- both contemporary and traditional- throughout the world.” Following a series of development projects, the organizers of the AFAF and its sponsors both locally and internationally assigned (GLAMOUR WEST AFRICA) to take charge of the preparation of the executive planning of the programme scheduled to come off in Lagos cosmopolitan city especially for the provision of accommodation for the visitors during the events. This maiden edition of AFRICA FASHION & ART FESTIVAL in this millennium is established to achieve a great deal by celebrating fashion and art of Africa all over the world. This will be done through the Promotion of our culture and style in a great deal of novel trends in fashion and art of new age of generation. In promoting African fashion and art designers all over the world, the event will serve as a model for the possible upcoming ones on the continent and beyond. This will reverberate the uniqueness of Africa as once preached in Senghorean Negritude. The crux of our tenet is built on value of the Black art and that it should be valued, respected and patronized like the most international designers. Being preoccupied with these, the organizers intend to sponsor the production of some locally made arts. This will enable the production in mass for a larger distribution across the continent, for the world at large to have a feel of our fashion and style in their wardrobes. READ MORE HERE
