Whilst the exact plans have been kept under wraps, Gary Illyes from Google explained in an interview with Marketing Land that whilst it was difficult for the company, it was looking into how it could measure brand mentions. Illyes said “we are thinking about how to measure it in aggregate”, adding that Google’s user experience teams were working on a solution. This news comes as Google’s brand lift programme continues to measure the impact of video campaigns on YouTube, looking at brand awareness and ad recall. Brand lift provides companies with the collected data, whilst also showing the effect of YouTube ads on purchase intent, and other metrics.

Today I'm going to share with you my marketing planning process, six steps to marketing any company. You need a plan. The first thing you need to do, is to define your goals. Do you want more traffic for brand awareness? Do you want more revenue? Do you just need more leads? Are you trying to get more e-commerce sales? You got to define your goals, because if you don't define your goals, you're not going to know exactly what you need to take in order to achieve them. The second thing you need to do is understand your customer. I'm not talking about, hey, you sell toilet paper, you provide mortgage loans and your customer is looking for that. That's just on the surface level. I'm talking about really understand your customer. Because once you understand that, you can leverage that to make sure that they choose you. And the way you understand your customers is you talk to them. It's not just about looking at analytics like Google Analytics. It's about surveying them, do tools like SurveyMonkey. It's about picking up the phone, dialing them, talking to them, getting feedback, showing them your website, showing them your product, showing them your marketing messages. If you truly understand your customers, you can figure out what makes them tick, and then from there, you'll boost your sales, traffics, and leads. The third step you need to do is assess key strengths. Just because marketing has all these different channels, doesn't mean that you should focus on all of them at once. Yes, eventually, you want to take an omnichannel approach, which is leveraging all the different marketing channels, but at the beginning, you need to assess your key strengths, and then leverage those first. Step four, pick one marketing channel. You already assessed your key strengths. Now it's time to go with one channel. You may have five strengths, you may have one strength. You want super laser focus, because when you tackle one channel first, and you do really well with it, you're much more likely to get results. Now, it's time for you to do competitive research, look at your competitors, what's working for them? Once you figure out what's working for them, you can then get a good understanding of what you should replicate and what you should avoid. The last thing you want to do is do the opposite of what your competitors are doing. Especially when they're already established and making money. So what I want you to do is head over to Ubersuggest, put in a URL of your competitors. You'll see a report, it shows either traffic, shows you their top pages. When you click on top pages, you can see things like their most popular pages, how many links they have, how many social shares each of these pages have, what keywords they're ranking for. This will all give you ideas on what you should be focusing on and what you shouldn't be. Step six, this last but not least, define how you're going to make money. Even though you're attracting people to your site, it doesn't mean that they're just going to raise their hand and be like, hey Neil, let me throw some money at you. But the thing is, getting traffic is only half the battle. You got to convert those people. You need to figure out how you're going to make money. And I wish there was a generic blank answer, but it's different for every single business. But once you have that, you can then come up with ways to figure out how to maximize the conversion and drive people down that path. Whether it's through tools like HelloBar that helps you collect emails. Or whether it's tools like Subscribers, that helps people get back to your site, and you can push them to, let's say, your Amazon pages. The analysis on how much money we're spending to generate the traffic and here's what's crazy, most people don't realize this, we generate, let's say a million visitors a month on Neil Patel. Do you know what the cost to get there is with video, production, podcasting, blogging, promotion, ads, link building? $110,000 a month. That's what it averaged out to for 2017. Here are my marketing strategies for 2018. I just bought a blog in the marketing space for a half a million bucks. They get a million visitors a month, and it's cheaper to spend money acquiring people who already have the traffic. So in 2017, I bought Uber Suggest, I think it was around 140 grand. They had very little traffic. I 381 redirected the site, traffic increased and guess what happened? Nothing. I hoped that my traffic would go through the roof, but nothing happened. Uber Suggest was a good acquisition and what I ended up learning from that is, who cares about links? Don't buy anything for the links. Buy it purely based off of traffic and just pay a simple metric. If Uber Suggest has roughly 200,000 visitors per month, I paid a hundred and something; I would have paid 200 grand, the money didn't matter. For a blog that I just spent half a million on, their traffic ranges. On a horrible month, they'll get around 800,000 uniques. In a perfect month, they'll get around, like, 1.2, 1.3 million uniques, and all I'm doing right now is buying as many blogs as possible. My marketing strategy for 2018 is to buy blogs based on of traffic. I look at the top posts that they have and how qualified their visitors are and determine if I can successfully monetize their content. I don't even care if they have revenue. If they don't have revenue, even better. The problem with Search Engine Journal is that they have conferences, they have advertising, and they have contracts for all of it. I don't care for any of that. I just want the traffic. So when you buy all these people for traffic and then you put it into your monetization flow, you can quickly figure out, what is this worth? If I can't make my money back in less than 12 months, I will not buy it. The other marketing strategy that I use when I'm buying these sites is to look for blogs that aren't monetized well. The blog that I ended up buying for half a million bucks, they're not even making three grand a month. If you're not even making three grand a month, that's a good deal, right? They're like; you're going to give me half a million dollars for this? No problem. Another creative marketing strategy I'm doing right now, is trying to buy a really popular marketing tool. I don't want to pay them all the money they're asking for because they want well into the millions, and it isn't worth it. But, I'm trying to work out a deal where I give them X amount of money up front, let's say a million dollars, and then give them a hundred thousand a month over X amount of months or a hundred thousand a year over X amount of years. When I see inefficiencies in sites, I figure I can purchase them and double the revenue because they aren't optimized for traffic or conversions. So buy it for what it's worth, optimize it, and then use the profits to pay them out continually. That way you're not using all of your money and the business is paying, you may have spent a bit more money, but personally, you don't have to spend as much money, and that's my marketing strategy for 2018. My goal is to spend at least $5 million acquiring businesses purely based on their traffic. Facebook ads and Google ads keep going up in costs, but social media marketing can be free. But there's so much noise and so many people out there; you're not going to stand out unless you follow these tips. Today I'm going to share with you how you can stand out on social media as an entrepreneur. The first thing you need to do is create amazing content. Some people will tell you to create video content. Others will tell you podcasting is better, and some will say you need long-form content. Well here's the thing, if you look at Gary Vaynerchuk, he does a ton of videos. That's what he specializes in. He loves it. But if you look at me, I create text-based content. Why, because I'm better at that. I'm not here to tell you to do videos, or podcasts, or text-based content, I'm saying pick the content type that you're the best at. If you're the best at something, you're more naturally likely to do better. The next thing you need to know about social media, I've tested videos, and podcasts, and text-based content. If you want to be popular when you walk down the street and people recognize you, videos are going to help more than anything else. If you want website traffic, I found that long-form content works better than anyone else. And it's not just me, even people like Tim Ferriss from The 4-Hour Workweek have found that long-form content produces more traffic than any other form of content. And why, because you're not just getting social media traffic. When you create long-form content, you're also getting a ton of Google traffic. See videos and podcast files don't rank well on Google and Google's one of the most popular websites in the world. So, you should consider leveraging long-form text-based content. If you suck at writing this content, you can go to jobs.problogger.net and hire other writers to help write for you. Because this content also does extremely well on social media. And once you have this long-form content or the ability to write it, you want to go to BuzzSumo, type in keywords, and you'll see what's popular. You click on view shares, and you'll see every single person who shared that article. You want to create then a similar article that's better and more in-depth. For example, if they talked about the 10 ways to do something, you want to discuss the 101 ways to do something. And when you break that down, no one's gonna copy you. Why, it takes way too much work to write the 1001 ways to do something. So, you go to view shares, you see all the people who share the 10 ways to do something, and you want to email them. But if you continually do that, you can get thousands and thousands of social shares and I tend to go to Upwork.com and I find people to send out those emails on my behalf. And it's helped my social traffic grow by a extra 17%, specifically on Twitter. And it's helped me get more followers, more retweets, right? As a entrepreneur if you're not there consistently, you're not gonna do well. I'm not talking about just posting content consistently, I'm talking about posting comments consistently, joining groups consistently, helping others consistently, the helping part is the most important. It's not about you. Social is a community, it's about other people, you have to help them out. Make sure that you're out there on social platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn participating in groups, your own channel, leaving comments that are thorough, not a one-liner; I'm talking about paragraphs that help people out. And if you follow these tips, you're not going to be popular within a year, or six months, or three months. You'll notice that your account will start climbing in popularity month over month, and you're gonna be doing better. As long as you follow these tips and put in the time, you will become more popular on social media. So make sure you subscribe, like, leave a comment, and if you're wondering some cool creative ways to write new content, leave a comment, and I'll give you feedback, and I'll tell you if that content will do well on your social profiles.
