Learn Oil and Gas with Animations

03:33
- Like our Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/oilvips - Oil and gas are generated from a source rock, organic matter buried in the depths of the earth. Once formed, they climb back towards the surface. On their way, cap rocks can impede their progress and they accumulate in reservoir rocks. Here they constitute hydrocarbon fields, which can be identified by interpreting seismic data (a sort of echography). The data is obtained with the help of a seismic ship. To confirm the interpretations of seismic data, two types of drilling gear exist. Each is adapted to a range of depth of water (down to more than 2500 meters). The platform seen here is a semi-submersible, which floats and retains its stabilised position by means of anchors fixed on the seabed. Platforms at sea are used not only for drilling but also for the production of hydrocarbons. This production consists of the separation of oil, gas and water, before the oil and gas is taken by pipeline towards a mainland terminal. Where it is impossible or too expensive to link the field to the coast by a pipeline, an FPSO ship is used (Floating Production Storage and Offloading barge). Onboard, the hydrocarbons and the water are separated. The oil is stored prior to being loaded on tankers and the gas is re-injected into the reservoir rocks. Gas from a field is taken to land through an underground gasoduct to a processing plant. There, if the gas is to be transported by sea, it is converted into liquid obtained by cooling it down to --163°C. When it arrives at the plant terminal, the liquid natural gas (LNG) is returned to its gaseous state in a re-gasification plant, before being introduced into the local gasoduct network. The LNG is stored in tanks before re-gasification. The crude oil is transported in a petroleum tanker, the capacity of which can attain 200 000 tons. It is commonly called a "super- tanker". The terminals capable of receiving such giants are few and far between. The ships used to transport the crude oil produced on an FPSO ship are of a much smaller capacity. The crude oil, before being refined, is stored in the port in the large capacity tanks. The natural gas is preserved in reservoirs (artificial or natural). It is ready to be injected by pumping into the gasoduct network for industrial and domestic use or as fuel in power-generating stations. As far as the crude oil goes, it is transported by oleoduct to the refinery. There it undergoes a number of transformations and blending. A variety of finished products are obtained (LPG, petrol, kerosene, diesel ...), or naphtha, which will be used as the basis for the composition of plastic products by complex petroleum chemistry. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Like our Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/oilvips Twitter: https://twitter.com/oilvips And Don't forget to subscribe to our channel

Plenty More Fish In The Sea - Pink Associates Ltd (formerly) Pink Productions & Management

31:29
Pink Associates formerly traded as Pink Productions and Management Ltd. www.pinkassociates.co.uk PMFITS, was the very first attempt from Pink Productions & Management. At the time the crew consisted of one experienced actor (Trevor Williams) and two helping hands (Tony Hollis & Anthony Rainey). It was finally edited by Adam Denby and Joe Nattrass who managed to piece together the rough audio and video footage. However we hope that overall, people will realise that under the circumstances the actors and crew did a fantastic job. It would be great if Pink P&M could get the monetary backing to re-shoot this production with the right equipment.

A New Imperative for Deep-Ocean Stewardship - Perspectives on Ocean Science

56:43
The deep continental margins were once perceived as monotonous mud slopes of limited ecological or environmental concern. Technological advances now reveal unexpected diversity, with a mosaic of lush habitats and ecosystems that support varied and unusual species fundamental to the health of the ocean and our own lives. Join Scripps biological oceanographer Lisa Levin as she reveals how changes in ocean temperature and chemistry, as well as growing economic opportunities, are placing new pressures on deep-ocean ecosystems, just as we are getting to know them Series: "Perspectives on Ocean Science" [2/2012] [Science] [Show ID: 23108]
Valuing the conservation of biodiversity in the deep sea

01:13:19
What's Marine Conservation Worth - Seminar Series (UNESCO/SA NOSTRA Chair in business and environmental management) Dr. Nick Hanley Professor of Environmental Economics at the University of St. Andrews Abstract The deep-sea includes over 90% of the world's oceans and is thought to be one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. It supplies society with valuable ecosystem services, including the provision of food, the regeneration of nutrients and the sequestration of carbon. Technological advancements in the second half of the 20th century made large-scale exploitation of mineral, hydrocarbon and fish resources possible. These economic activities, combined with climate change impacts, constitute a considerable threat to deep-sea biodiversity. Many governments, including that of the UK, have therefore decided to implement additional protected areas in their waters of national jurisdiction. To support the decision process and to improve our understanding for the acceptance of marine conservation plans across the general public, a choice experiment survey asked Scottish households for their willingness-to-pay for additional marine protected areas in the Scottish deep-sea. The world's largest concentration of cold-water coral (CWC) is found off the Norwegian coast. Most CWC discoveries are recent, posing new challenges for Norwegian coastal and fishery authorities regarding the management of deep-sea resources. Scientific knowledge of CWC is limited, and many citizens have not even heard about them. This creates problems for the application of the stated preference methods to capture their economic value, and very few such studies have been conducted. To fill this gap, we designed a discrete choice experiment, which was implemented in a valuation workshop setting in order to derive estimates of participants' willingness to pay (WTP) for increasing the protection of CWC. Despite the fact that marine industries such as oil/gas and fisheries could be adversely affected by CWC protection, this did not reduce the respondents' willingness to pay for further protection. The possibility that CWCs play an important role as habitat for fish was the single most important variable to explain respondents' WTP for CWC protection. The survey revealed a high degree of preference heterogeneity, while we found an average WTP for CWC protection in the range of €274–287.

Staying Alive: Patterns for Failure Management from the Bottom of the Ocean

57:36
Training for technical diving prepares you for situations in a high pressure environment where failures are unavoidable but also highly dangerous. It means surviving in a hostile environment with limited resources where the failure of individual components can trigger deadly failure cascades. A diver who can’t understand how to do proper post-accident analysis and who hasn’t learned to repeatedly survive through failure is a liability to themselves and to others. This talk uses the framework of technical SCUBA and rebreather diving to talk about patterns for failure management and how they can be applied in an engineering context. Ronnie Chen is an engineering manager at Twitter. Previously, she was a data engineer at Slack and Braintree, and a backend engineer at PayPal. She is a deep sea technical diver and was also the sous chef of a Michelin-starred restaurant in a previous life.

Can conservation save our ocean? | The Economist

27:05
The ocean is facing its greatest ever challenge - overfishing, pollution and climate change are all threatening the health of a resource on which the whole world depends. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.st/2G3TH9d The crew of this ship is on a mission to try and save one of the most endangered sea creatures on the planet. They’re in the middle of a marine protected area in Mexico - a conservation zone where certain types of fishing are banned. Local fishermen are poaching a species of fish that is so highly prized in China, they can make tens of thousands of dollars in just one night. With ocean life under threat from overfishing, pollution and climate change, could marine protected areas be the answer? Near the Mexican fishing town of San Felipe, on the The Upper Gulf of California... Conservation group, Sea Shepherd is working with the authorities to help enforce a Marine Protected Area - or MPA. A designated section of ocean to be conserved, managed and protected. Maintaining rich, diverse ecosystems is key for the health of the Ocean - and ultimately the survival of humanity. But ocean life is under threat. From plants to micro-organisms and animals, species are disappearing forever. Marine Biologist Patricia Gandolfo and the rest of the Sea Shepherd crew are here to stop poachers. Caught up in the nets of the criminal gangs and local fishermen is one particularly rare porpoise - the Vaquita. Worldwide there are thousands of sea species currently threatened with extinction. Losing just one species from the food chain can have a disastrous effect on an entire ecosystem. After it’s sold on, the Totoaba’s swim bladder can fetch up to $100,000 a kilo in China, where it’s prized for its medicinal properties. Critics disapprove of Sea Shepherds use of direct-action tactics in some of their campaigns, but in the Gulf of California, their presence is welcomed by the Mexican government. Globally, the fishing industry employs 260 million people, but many more subsistence fishermen depend on the ocean for their income. Local fisherman here claim protecting the ocean has limited how they can fish, destroying their way of life. Yet doing nothing may ultimately present more of a threat to their livelihoods. Currently Marine Protected Areas make up only 3.6% of the world’s ocean but a growing number of scientists are calling for 30% to be protected by 2030. Cabo Pulmo now has a thriving eco-tourism and diving industry. The environmental rewards provided by the MPA to the local community have been valued at millions of dollars a year - Far more than they ever made from fishing. The ocean is facing its greatest ever challenge - overfishing, pollution and climate change are all threatening the health of a resource on which the whole world depends. Marine protected areas can come in many forms. But if they are to be effective, they must align the need for conservation with the needs of those who depend on the ocean for survival. In order to avoid disaster–and to ensure a sustainable supply of fish for the future–far more of our ocean needs urgent protection. Stunning Sea Animals Highlight Need for Big-Picture Management | One-Minute Dive with Pew

It’s no longer enough to care for our oceans one fish at a time. http://www.pewtrusts.org/oceanscience. Looking at the ocean with a wide-angle lens reveals changing ecosystems, vibrant marine life, and a pulsing coastal economy. From swirling sea turtles trekking across a great expanse and fishing vessels returning with the day’s catch, to deep sea corals in the deepest trench and warming waters from a changing climate—all of these activities are interconnected. Many scientists, including former NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco, know that managing our marine fisheries means stepping away from the traditional species-by-species approach and taking a look at the bigger picture. The health of our oceans will depend on our ability to understand and account for the interactions among species, their environment, and the people who rely upon them for food, commerce, and sport. This comprehensive approach is called ecosystem-based fisheries management. “We need to think about the whole as we manage the piece,” says Lubchenco. “We really need to be thinking about not just individual species, but the other parts of the ecosystem, the habitat, the prey, the competitors, the predators—all those pieces that interact.” Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D., a Pew marine fellow and professor at Oregon State University, is passionate about promoting the discovery and use of scientific knowledge in policy and management. Under her leadership, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration focused on returning fisheries to sustainability and profitability and restoring the oceans and coasts to a healthy state. She was most vocal about the way the world’s oceans are interconnected and her conviction that we must manage them accordingly. Making the transition to ecosystem-based fisheries management will help meet the rising and urgent challenges of dynamic, changing and imperiled ocean environments. Important habitats must be protected, forage fish must be carefully managed to account for their role in the food web, and the waste of nontarget wildlife, or bycatch, must be reduced to shore up the resilience of our oceans. Presented by Richelle Ahlvers, Storage Management Architect, Broadcom Limited Download Presentation: https://www.snia.org/sites/default/files/SDC/2018/presentations/Storage_Resource_Mgmt/Ahlvers_Richelle_A_Deep_Dive_Sea_Trek_With_SNIA_Swordfish.pdf Abstract: The SNIA’s Scalable Storage Management Technical Work Group (SSM TWG) has developed an open industry standard specification that provides a unified approach for the management of storage systems and data services. Swordfish™ is an extension of the DMTF Redfish specification developed by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) to provide a unified approach for the management of storage equipment and services in converged, hyper-converged, hyperscale and cloud infrastructure environments, making it easier for IT administrators and DevOps to integrate scalable solutions into their data centers. Building on the concepts presented in the Introduction to Redfish and Swordfish (Swimming With SNIA Swordfish™) sessions, this session will go into more detail on the Swordfish Scalable Storage Management API specification, including details of the Swordfish Class of Service concepts, structure and usage. The deep-dive will also provide a look at Swordfish schema, and will look in more detail at the two Swordfish Service Configurations that can be used to build different types of storage systems. This session will also present information about the emerging Swordfish profile definitions. Some prior familiarity with at least introductory information about Redfish and Swordfish will be helpful for understanding this session. Learning Objectives: 1. Develop an understanding of the different Swordfish Service Configurations, and their appropriate applicability 2. Explore Swordfish Storage Pools and Classes of Service 3. Dive into the depths of Swordfish schema and learn how to understand the different annotations 4. Surface with a detailed understanding of how both Swordfish clients and implementations will use profile information

Dwejra - Stunning galaxy of marine wildlife - PANACEA

11:45
Deep within Malta's blue sea lies a galaxy of marine wildlife coming in all shapes, sizes and colours, or so we're told. For despite the rich heritage, most Maltese know little of the underwater world encircling the island's 300-kilometre coastline. But two 15-minute-long underwater documentaries released this week are seeking to change that and bring Malta's submarine treasures to light. Venomous stargazers, eels, bearded fireworms, eerie John Dory, barracuda and colonies of salps (a type of plankton) all feature. Viewers can observe mutualism at work first-hand, as a sea anemone and hermit crab benefit from one another. The documentaries, which cover marine protected areas Rdum Majjiesa and Dwejra, are not available for sale. Instead, they will be distributed to all schools as of the next scholastic year. Public screenings of the documentaries are also planned, with the footage eventually being projected continuously within a number of environmental information areas, including one set to be established at Dwejra. Produced by Shaun Arrigo and Monolith Ltd, the documentaries were commissioned by the University of Malta's International Ocean Institute centre as part of the EU-funded Panacea project. The Panacea -- or Promotion of Marine Protected Areas Through Environmental Education Centres -- project will run until 2013. It seeks to promote sound management of marine ecosystems through education. IOI-Malta marine biologist Alan Deidun praised the documentary, saying: "It marks an unprecedented local attempt at projecting Malta's stunning underwater assets to students through unrivalled video quality."

Jayantha Obeysekera - Sea level rise, Climate Change and Water Management in South Florida

52:12
Jayantha Obeysekera - Chief Modeler, South Florida Water Management District Sea Level Rise, Climate Change, and Water Resources Management in South Florida: Implications, Challenges, and Adaptation Through Federal/State/Local partnerships, the Greater Everglades, once a free-flowing, natural marsh system in southern Florida, is being restored under numerous water resources management projects requiring large investments of time and money. Rising sea levels are already causing challenges in water resources management of the rapidly growing urban environment in south Florida. Future climate change and sea level rise have the potential to cause significant impacts on flood control and water supply functions of water resources management, and on existing and future ecosystem restoration projects. An assessment of the precipitation projections of climate models shows that their ability to represent the landscape of Florida and predict historical climate patterns may be limited. To understand the vulnerability of the regional water management system in a changing environment, a sensitivity analysis using a regional-scale, hydrologic and water management model was conducted. This presentation will provide a summary of technical investigations on climate variability, climate change, and sea level rise to address the current and future water management concerns and the adaptation approaches that are being used. New approaches for hydrologic designs of infrastructure to deal with nonstationarity associated with climate change will also be discussed

Okeanos Explorer: Exploring Remote Pacific MPAs Cam 1, 2 & 3 combined

03:50:51
Okeanos Explorer: Exploring Remote Pacific MPAs (Marine Protected Areas) NOAA Okeanos Explorer: http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/okeanos/welcome.html From March 7 – 29, 2017, NOAA and partners will conduct an ocean exploration expedition on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer to collect critical baseline information about unknown and poorly known deepwater areas in the Howland and Baker Unit of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument (PRIMNM) and the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA). Like previous expeditions, NOAA will work with the scientific and resource management communities to characterize these areas through telepresence-based exploration. Operations will use the ship’s deepwater mapping systems, NOAA’s dual-bodied 6,000-meter remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Deep Discoverer (D2) and Seirios, as well as a high-bandwidth satellite connection for real-time ship-to-shore communications. The ship will conduct 24-hour operations consisting of daytime ROV dives and overnight mapping operations, including during transit. Operations will focus on priority ROV dive sites and mapping areas in and around PRIMNM and PIPA, as well as dives in New Zealand’s Territory of Tokelau, as the ship transits through to the cruise priority areas. ROV dive sites are expected to include deep-sea coral and sponge habitats, bottomfish habitats, and seamounts. ROV dives will include high-resolution visual surveys and limited sampling. This expedition will help establish foundational information in the region to catalyze further exploration, research, and management activities. Live video of dives in the Howland and Baker Unit of PRIMNM and in PIPA can be viewed online in real time from March 8 – 27, 2017, typically from about 8 am to 5 pm WST (March 7 - March 26, from 1 pm to 10 pm EST).
