Ocean disposal of radioactive waste

30:08
From 1946 through 1993, thirteen countries (fourteen, if the USSR and Russia are considered separately) used ocean disposal or ocean dumping as a method to dispose of nuclear/radioactive waste. The waste materials included both liquids and solids housed in various containers, as well as reactor vessels, with and without spent or damaged nuclear fuel. Since 1993, ocean disposal has been banned by international treaties. (London Convention (1972), Basel Convention, MARPOL 73/78) However, according to the United Nations, some companies have been dumping radioactive waste and other hazardous materials into the coastal waters of Somalia, taking advantage of the fact that the country had no functioning government from the early 1990s onwards. According to one official at the United Nations, this caused health problems for locals in the coastal region and posed a significant danger to Somalia's fishing industry and local marine life. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_disposal_of_radioactive_waste

This is a report about the nuclear waste that was dumped into the sea around Europe between 1967 and 1982. All 114.726 tons are still there - thousands of barrels, corroding or even rosted through by now. It was broadcasted Nov.1, 2011 For informations about Schacht Asse, have a look at wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schacht_Asse_II Interesting how this information is JUST NOW being reported on... do you think it has anything to do with FUKUSHIMA? Sailors Talk of Dumping Radioactive Waste at Sea

06:50
Original Post:http://www.tampabay.com/news/military/veterans/the-atomic-sailors/2157927 Mirrored from:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxaXQdy2lWQ They asked the dying Pasco County man about his Navy service a half-century before. He kept talking about the steel barrels. They haunted him, sea monsters plaguing an old sailor. "We turned off all the lights," George Albernaz testified at a 2005 Department of Veterans Affairs hearing, "and ... pretend that we were broken down and ... we would take these barrels and having only steel-toed shoes ... no protection gear, and proceed to roll these barrels into the ocean, 300 barrels at a trip." Not all of them sank. A few pushed back against the frothing ocean, bobbing in the waves like a drowning man. Then shots would ring out from a sailor with a rifle at the fantail. And the sea would claim the bullet-riddled drum. Back inside the ship, Albernaz marked in his diary what the sailors dumped into the Atlantic Ocean. He knew he wasn't supposed to keep such a record, but it was important to Albernaz that people know he had spoken the truth, even when the truth sounded crazy. For up to 15 years after World War II, the crew of Albernaz's ship, the USS Calhoun County, dumped thousands of tons of radioactive waste into the Atlantic Ocean, often without heeding the simplest health precautions, according to Navy documents and Tampa Bay Times interviews with more than 50 former crewmen. Albernaz began a battle for his life in 1988 when part of his brain began to die, mystifying doctors who eventually concluded the rare ailment might be linked to radiation. He filed a VA claim for benefits in 2001 that was repeatedly rejected, often with tortured government reasoning. The VA and Navy told Albernaz he was not exposed to radiation on the Calhoun County, a vessel the Navy ordered sunk in 1963 because it was radioactive. The VA ignored Navy documents discovered by a former congressional aide proving the ship's radioactivity, telling Albernaz they were "unsubstantiated." And the Navy today points to Cold War records that are incomplete and unreliable as proof crewmen were not exposed to dangerous radiation. The Navy and VA's insistence that atomic waste on the Calhoun County was not dangerous comes 15 years after the VA linked the death of a crewman who served with Albernaz to radiation. Adequate health safeguards were followed and the crew was not exposed to dangerous radiation, Navy spokesman Kenneth Hess said. "The Navy did not scuttle the ship because of radioactivity," he said, "but because it was at the end of its useful life." Up to 1,000 men served on the Calhoun County in the years it dumped radioactive waste, a practice that continued until about 1960 — two years before the ship's decommissioning. It's impossible to know how many suffered unusual health problems after they left the ship. The VA and Navy never followed up on their health. Some got sick and never filed VA claims. And after more than a half-century, much of the crew has died. Albernaz died in 2009 of heart failure after his health was ruined by radiation, his wife says. He was 75. "George believed his own government thought he was lying, like it was all a figment of his imagination," said his widow, Bernice Albernaz, 69, who continues the fight with the VA that her husband began 12 years ago.

Radioactive waste: Dumped and Forgotten

52:44
This documentary was shown on German and French TV but not in England. For obvious reasons the English don't want anyone to see it. This is the English version which we hope you will mirror and call attention to. It discusses the effects of sea dumping of radioactive waste on the health of people living on the local coasts, like the Irish Sea and the Baltic Sea, which is the most radioactive sea in the world. The documentary focuses on the British sea dumping in the English Channel Hurd Deep about 12 miles north of the Channel Island of Alderney. Alderney is also subject to releases to the sea from the French Nuclear Reprocessing Plant at Cap de la La Hague 12 miles East of the small island. Prof Chris Busby who was consulted on the health effects of this marine radioactive pollution visits the island with the producers and makes measurements of contamination on the beach. Busby originally visited the island in 1998 with Jersey MP Stuart Syvret and found an excess of brain tumours and also general cancer mortality which was written up as a Green Audit paper and became part of a BBC news story at the time. They were both chased off the island. Manfred Ladwig manages to get Dr John Cooper, head of the UK radiological protection organisation, the HPA, to admit that they balance childhood cancer cases against the advantages of cheaply disposing of nuclear waste. Cooper also agrees that his position involves a conflict of interest since he is head of HPA which takes advice on radiation protection from ICRP. Cooper is on the ICRP committee. He therefore takes advice from himself. We also hear from Prof Richard Wakeford, ex head of research for Sellafield, but now an "independent" expert, also on ICRP, who tells us the coastal child leukemias were caused by "population mixing". How long do we have to be subject to advice from these clowns? Prof Busby asks the youtube to kindly leave this alone since he was part of the production and has the right to upload it.

What is the effect of pumping radioactive waste into the sea? It had been thought that it remained in the sediment of the sea bed, but now there are other theories; can we afford to take the risk? What sort of future are we making? This film is of historical interest but the issues raised are still current. Many people are worried about the dumping of nuclear waste in the sea, where it might contaminate marine life including our own food. This film shows the courageous action of the Greenpeace protesters, who chained themselves to the platforms of the ship to try to stop the barrels being put overboard. They claim that there should be a moratorium on dumping, but the authorities are devising new ways of getting the barrels into the sea, and the protesters are faced with heavy fines. Made in 1985 this film reflects the cultural attitudes and state of science of the time it was made. The issues raised are timeless. Japan To Dump Deadly Fukushima Nuclear Waste Into Pacific Ocean

05:15
Japan is planing to dump 920,000 tons of deadly Fukushima nuclear waste into the Pacific ocean, saying that they can no longer contain the waste on land. Following the major tsunami in 2011 that resulted the reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant shutting down, the constant leaking of radiation that has occurred in the aftermath has been dubbed one of the worst nuclear disasters since Chernobyl. Newstarget.com reports: Six years after the disaster, the three crippled reactors are still leaking water with high levels of radiation into the Pacific Ocean. Though the Pacific Ocean is a vast stretch of water, Fukushima’s radiation is reaching the coast of the United States, Canada, and Mexico, contaminating the fish we eat and the water we swim in. 88,000 tons of radioactive waste – and nowhere to put it

07:39
The United States produces 2,200 tons of nuclear waste each year…and no one knows what to do with it. The federal government has long promised, but never delivered, a safe place for nuclear power plants to store their spent fuel. This means that radioactive waste is piling up all over the country. We visited one of the worst places where the waste is stuck: a beachside power plant uncomfortably close to both San Diego and Los Angeles. And we asked the people in charge of the waste there: what happens now? Escort helicopters provided security as a small flotilla of boats from environmental group Greenpeace led a peaceful protest against the arrival of the armed British ships in Cherbourg at about 0720 local time (0520gmt). Greenpeace led a string of protests against the shipment of 140 kilograms (308 pounds) of military-grade plutonium - enough to make nearly 10 atomic bombs - taken from US nuclear warheads. A French court ruled that the environmental group could face fines if any of its boats got closer than 300 metres (yards) at sea or 100 metres (yards) in port. British ships Pacific Teal and Pacific Pintail hauled the highly radioactive substance to France for conversion into a commercial fuel called MOX at the Cadarache factory near the southern port of Marseille. France's state-of-the-art nuclear technology is being used to help fulfil the terms of a September 2000 U.S.-Russia disarmament accord in which both countries promised to destroy 34 tons of military plutonium. France has received shipments of radioactive material in the past for conversion into MOX fuel, a mixture of plutonium oxide and uranium oxide, but this is the first time weapons-grade plutonium is involved. Nuclear Explosions, Waste Dumped in Ocean, 2012

14:34
The catalogue of waste dumped at sea by the Soviets, according to documents seen by Bellona, and which were today released by the Norwegian daily Aftenposten, includes some 17,000 containers of radioactive waste, 19 ships containing radioactive waste, 14 nuclear reactors, including five that still contain spent nuclear fuel; 735 other pieces of radiactively contaminated heavy machinery, and the K-27 nuclear submarine with its two reactors loaded with nuclear fuel. A group of 16 Russian and Norwegian researchers who sailed to take measurements surrounding a Russian nuclear submarine that was scuttled for nuclear waste off the coast of the former Soviet nuclear test archipelago Novaya Zemlya in the Kara Sea have found no radioactive leaks, Norwegian radiation authorities said today. Per Strand, a director at the Norwegian Radiation Protection agency told Bellona, however, that the primary purpose of the expedition, which returned today, was to inspect the possibility of an uncontrolled chain reaction aboard the K-27 Russian nuclear submarine, which was sunk in 50 meters of water in Novaya Zemlya's Stepovogo Bay in the Kara Sea as nuclear waste in 1981. "The Russian side indicated there might be a hypothetical possibility that spent nuclear fuel in the reactor in extreme situations could cause an uncontrolled chain reaction, which can lead to heat and radioactivity releases," Strand said in a telephone interview from Kirkeness. The K-27, was dumped by the Soviet Navy in 1981, with spent nuclear fuel packed in its reactors, after a 1968 reactor leak aboard the killed nine sailors. The navy tried to repair it before deciding to seal the nuclear units and sinking the sub. The researchers also examined some 2000 containers of various kinds of radioactive waste that were dumped in Stepovogo Bay, but found no increase in radiation since the site was last inspected in 1994. Authorities in Russia and their counterparts in Norway, which lies about 965 kilometers to the west of the sunken sub, need to make a decision about a safe disposal of the K-27, which was the top priority of the expedition, Strand said. Strand said that the joint research team aboard the Ivan Petrov research vessel took sediment, plant and sea life samples. They also used a mini submarine to take photos of the K-27's condition. Though emphasizing that all data collected is preliminary, Strand said it would "contribute to making decisions about whether the submarine needs to be lifted out of the water" for safer storage. "For now, the first priority will be the development of environmental impact studies based on the information we have collected to judge the feasibility of lifting the submarine," he said. Could we just send all our nuclear waste to the sun? It would sure solve a lot of problems! Trace looks at whether or not this crazy plan has any possibility of happening. Read More: What are nuclear wastes and how are they managed? http://www.world-nuclear.org/Nuclear-Basics/What-are-nuclear-wastes-/ "The most significant high-level waste from a nuclear reactor is the used nuclear fuel left after it has spent three years in the reactor generating heat for electricity. Radioactive Waste - The Journey to Disposal

09:46
Nuclear technologies benefit people everywhere. Radioactive sources are used to sterilize food and medical instruments, to develop improved crops and to diagnose and treat patients. Research reactors are used in science and for producing radioisotopes for medical use and 30 countries use nuclear power for energy production. These various uses of nuclear technologies generate waste like many other processes. To ensure that it poses no risk to people or the environment now and in the future all countries using nuclear technologies have the responsibility to manage radioactive waste safely and securely. Fukushima Nuclear Radiation Has Contaminated ENTIRE Pacific Ocean

03:12
Fukushima nuclear disaster has contaminated the world’s largest ocean in only five years and it’s still leaking 300 tons of radioactive waste every day. In 2011, an earthquake created a tsunami that caused a meltdown at the TEPCO nuclear power plant in Fukushima Japan. Three nuclear reactors melted down and released radiation. Over the next three months, radioactive chemicals, leaked into the Pacific Ocean. However, the numbers may actually be much higher as Japanese official estimates have been proven by several scientists to be flawed in recent years. Fukushima continues to leak an astounding 300 tons of radioactive waste into the Pacific Ocean every day. It will continue do so indefinitely as the source of the leak cannot be sealed as it is inaccessible to both humans and robots due to extremely high temperatures. Illegal toxic dumping in Somalia.

02:03
Illegal toxic waste has been dumping in Somalia since late 1980's. This kind of illegal activity has to be stopped. activities like this are coasting a lot of $$$ to clean t up. the world organizations has to see the effect and do something about it. using third wold countries as an advantage of illegal dumping without argument is very illegal : it affects a whole lot of coast activity. it also causes a piracy activity because thier is no other fishery source for those coast fishers.

Deformed Fish Being Found In Heavily Fished Area, Contaminated by Nuclear Waste

06:11
http://undergroundworldnews.com Murmansk, Russia is home to 20,000 fuel rods, 12,000 cubic meters (about 333,360 cubic feet) of nuclear waste and 11,000 containers that the Russian navy has simply dumped into the Barents Sea and the Kara Sea, both in the Arctic Ocean. The Barents Sea sea is where a majority of commercial fish and crabs are fished for the world, especially for Northern Europe. During the Cold War, up to 150 nuclear submarines were stationed in the Murmansk region at any given time. Each sub had two reactors, and contained between 248 and 252 nuclear fuel rods. Most of these giants, some as long as 170 meters (558 feet), have been decommissioned in the past 15 years. But at least 40 still contain their reactors, complete with radioactive fuel rods. Like rusted whales, these floating potential environmental disasters sit at anchor in the Kola fjords, waiting to be stripped of their radioactive bowels. Most of the region’s highly radioactive fuel rods are stored in concrete containers in Andrejeva Bay. Many of these now-crumbling containers, intended only as temporary storage for nuclear waste, are kept on three freighters in Murmansk harbor. The biggest of the three ships, the 79-year-old “Lepse,” carries significant amounts of uranium 235, plutonium 259 and various fissionable byproducts. To cram as much waste as possible onto the ship, workers used sledge hammers to force individual fuel rods into the hollow containers. The “Lepse” constantly has to be pumped up with compressed air to prevent it from sinking. Despite the ship’s close proximity to downtown Murmansk, the radiation level displayed on an early-warning panel at the city’s main bus station is always zero. As of 2015 350 cubic square feet of radioactive waste has been removed from the area. ISIS Abe Japan is dumping Fukushima nuclear waste

05:07
There were too many lies and cover up from Japanese government and companies over Fukushima nuclear plants. Hitachi engineer Mitsuhiko Tanaka who was involved with the production of metal container for nuclear fuel rods for Fukushima admitted about defects of container which was bent during 2.5 years of production but to save money Hitachi covered it up by push the metal container back and weaken the structure of nuclear rods container. Also TEPCO who was managing Fukushima nuclear plants also tried to stop sea water flowing into nuclear reactors to stop salt water damages to the plants after their 3 back up cooling systems all failed but their nuclear engineer Masao Yoshida disobeyed the company order and dump the sea water into reactor to cool it down for further spread of explosion and radiation. Japanese company was more concerned for saving money than saving lives. Masao Yoshida died of cancer 2 years later but TEPCO refused to admit that he died of radiation exposure during nuclear clean up and blamed on his health. Bipolar Shinzo Abe's Japan lied to the world that they are handling situation with Fukushima nuclear mess but they were dumping it to Pacific Ocean and now radiation traces are found in the US west coast region. They still want to keep running nuclear plants after the incident with the earthquakes in their country risking lives of whole world. Who is more dangerous to the world. ISIS or Japan? Before waste your money for the Japanese products, think about this. Japan gave the world big "Fuk-u-shit-ma". Currently, Japan is ran by Shinzo Abe who is grand son of Class A war criminal under Hideki Tojo who bombed Pearl Harbor and responsible for policy of torture & killing POW. IAEA isn't going to do anything to Japan for awhile. The world is screwed with Japanese Yukiya Amano as head of IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) department. He said Fukushima was act of mother nature and not a human error but that is a complete lie. He is trying hard to let Japan keep nuclear power while risking everybody's lives with another potential major nuclear accident in Japan. Japan is sitting on moving earth crust. One of these days, it will go under and drag 54 of their nuclear power plants with it and destroy humankind. This is not if but when. Countries with lot of earthquakes like Japan should be banned from using nuclear power plants. There are alternate power sources available like wind and wave power. Japan has 2nd largest foreign reserves in the world with $1.2 trillion dollars which they can use but they are trying to save money and decided to turn on their nuclear plants again after Fukushima accident. First one they opened was Kyushu island because they thought it was safe being far away from Fukushima but it was hit by another major earthquakes in 4/15/16. Nowhere is safe from earthquakes in Japan but they plan to open 4 more nuclear plants soon. This is a madness and the whole world closed blind eyes to Japan. I am not against nuclear power but earthquakes country like Japan should be banned from using nuclear plants. It's a common sense. 4/15/16 Most recently, Kyushu Japan was hit with major earthquakes again near only active nuclear plant after Fukushima accident. Shinzo Abe thought Kyushu was safe because it is far away from Fukushima but as I said before no where is safe from earthquakes in Japan. IAEA need to ban Japan from having nuclear plant. If Japan sink with their 50 nuclear plants so goes humankind down the drain.

Discarded Russian Submarines Could Cause a Nuclear Disaster in the Arctic

05:52
http://www.undergroundworldnews.com The Arctic could become a site of future turmoil, and not just because of the emerging geopolitical tensions and militarization in the region. Beyond concerns of a frozen conflict in the icy north, there is the additional fear that the Barents and Kara Seas could become the location of a slow-motion nuclear disaster. Until 1991 the Soviet Union used the seas as a junkyard where it would dispose of its nuclear waste. According to the Bellona Foundation, citing the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authorities (NRPA), the Soviet Union dumped "19 ships containing radioactive waste; 14 nuclear reactors, including five that still contain spent nuclear fuel; 735 other pieces of radioactively contaminated heavy machinery; 17,000 containers of radioactive waste," and three nuclear submarines in the seas. They detail the dumping of civil and military waste between 1965 and the early 1980s. In one incident, the crew of a dumping vessel were exposed to radiation. The site chosen was 2,000 metres (6,600 feet) deep, in international waters. But there is concern that some consignments may have ended up elsewhere. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/1766365.stm ☢ Yellowcake Cartel dumping radioactive waste at sea since 1943 - U 234 with U 235 cargo at Cape Cod -- Secret Weapons of Third Reich ☢ Yellowcake Cartel (Savoiy Bernadotte Saxe Coburg und Gotta) dumping radioactive waste in ocean, at fault lines and in old mines since the construction of the Halden reactor by Hitler and Hydro in 1943 ☢ https://youtu.be/IY12zDGxk94 7 April 1940--1990 Nazi Uranium, Norsk Hydro, Stena and DFDS «Scandinavian Star» SKULD RSA https://youtu.be/SKj69FM0VtY Halden og Kjeller - Norges Hiroshima og Nagasaki - Arven etter Nygaard Harald Hauge & Co. https://youtu.be/22I6HSJ9YMc Slik spredde Hauge atomvåpen fra Halden-reaktoren, bak ryggen til USA - NRK Mokumentar https://youtu.be/MzhtQKO4HpY NRK: Slik spredde Bernadottene (i Norge) atomvåpen bak ryggen til USA -- A/S Noratom https://youtu.be/BPmsQdCcUCM Yellowcake Cartel -- GROGATE (1996) Hugenottene Ramm og Setsaas skriver boken Gro-gate, Hauge & Co. https://youtu.be/ykHVoVa2rP8 1959 Kong Olav gjenåpner (den private) Halden-reaktoren - med uranstaver fra Savoy Bulgarien https://youtu.be/wV3JZv2UJV0 15 April 1945 Uranium oxide U-235 from Norway for the Manhattan Project | Nuclear fission https://youtu.be/-045kNIZI0w Fake News -- The Hollow Coin (1958) Atomic spies - Rudolph Abel, NKVD Maria Qvisling, Hauge & Co. https://youtu.be/Xqy1luA9PeU 1957 A/S Noratom ved Jens Chr. Japanese Company To Dump 777,000 Tons Of Radioactive Waste Into The Ocean

03:26
The tsunami disabled the emergency generators, which meant the cooling systems weren’t active when the reactors were shut down. It was the biggest nuclear incident since the devastating Chernobyl disaster in 1986. But with the clean-up operation continuing to this day, the Japan Times has reported that the head of the mission has decided to dump nearly 600 tanks, containing about 777,000 tons of radioactive water, into the ocean. http://marygreeley.com/?p=56141

This disaster happened in 2011 and it has still be dumping more radioactive waste in the air and the ocean. Causing the sea life and land animals to die; it will be affecting your family. Radiation levels are dangerously high and the are getting higher. The Radical HomeGoddess speaks about this in depth. If you want to know more you can visit her channel. I have been keeping and eye on the situation and I saw this trending on face-book. Radioactive Waste Disposal (USPHS, 1959)

24:16
This NIH in-house training film shows how the largest user in the world of radioactive waste, NIH, disposed of low-level waste from 1949 until 1963. It shows testing; preparation and packaging of waste, monitoring and record keeping for procedures and personnel; and disposal, including use of regular sewer drains, special holding tanks, and ocean dumping. The film also shows and discusses truck convoys' and ships' special requirements for carrying radioactive wastes, especially carbon 14, hydrogen 3, tritium, and cobalt pellets. Shots include: Dr. Howard Andrews in his laboratory, aerials of NIH, exterior of the NIH Radiation Safety Office, the ship Cherokee, cintillation counter, urine sample collection box, film badge personnel monitoring devices, gas flow counter, and geiger counter. Wasteland: The nuclear graveyard under New Mexico

12:46
Today, nearly 70,000 tons of nuclear waste sits outside nuclear power plants across the country. For the last half-century, scientists and politicians have struggled to create a viable solution for permanent waste disposal at Yucca Mountain, located 90 miles outside Las Vegas. They've failed. As the political dust settles over Yucca, eyes turn to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, outside of Carlsbad, New Mexico. Japan is dumping Fukushima waste water killing sea creatures

18:00
Forget about dirty bombs by ISIS. Japanese are doing that by dumping Fukushima nuclear waste water to Pacific Ocean. Since Fukushima, there have been 10,000 sea lions washed up in California coast died of malnutrition. Their nuclear waste water is changing the eco system to break down in food chains. Japan must stop dumping the nuclear waste to Pacific Ocean and help with clean up in other parts of the world other than Japan. Before wasting your money for the Japanese products, think about that they gave the big middle finger to the world with Fuk-u-shit-ma. Shinzo Abe's Nazi government is more busy suing governments like South Korea and Taiwan for import banning Fukushima fish and less care about cleaning up their mess. Shinzo Abe is grand son of Class A war criminal under Hideki Tojo who bombed Pearl Harbor and responsible for policy of torture & killing POW. These crazy Nazi Japanese are also turning back on their nuclear plants in their earthquake country but the world is closing blind eyes on them. Earthquake countries like Japan should never have nuclear plants. Its too much risk to the world and we should ban them from having nuclear plants. Its same story with their whales killing to extinction when everybody signed up for protecting intelligent species in our ocean. Japanese have history of extermination with living species. In South Korean Dokdo island, they killed all 50,000 sea lions to extinction during Japanese occupation of Korea.

Nuclear danger remains over dumping of damaged Soviet submarines

01:13
http://www.euronews.com/ Soviet-era submarines dumped more than 30 years ago in the Arctic Ocean are threatening a major nuclear catastrophe, according to a report by a German magazine. The experimental sub K27 was sunk at a depth of just 33 metres, a hundred times below international guidelines. Some scientists claim the vessel, which was deliberately sunk in the Kara Sea, is already leaking radioactive material. "A creeping catastrophe has already begun. The longer these submarines are under water the greater the danger that more and more radioactivity will escape and contaminate the sea all around it," said German nuclear security expert Wolfgang Renneberg . An even bigger danger is the highly enriched nuclear fuel in its reactor, say scientists. In August, Russia released details of 19 subs, 14 nuclear reactors and thousands of other pieces radioactive waste lying at the bottom of the ocean. As well as key fishing grounds, the Kara Sea is thought to hold more than 37 billion barrels of oil. Russia and Norway are studying how to safely raise the K-27 from the seabed.
