Welcome back to my channel and today's vlog is going to be documenting my day of having to write a research essay for my Ethno 50B class on the history of modern jazz, more specifically, a paper about Dizzy Gillespie. I was able to conduct my research in the library to get some hard copy sources and I conducted some online research for some additional sources as well. Once I had that it was time to write my paper and in doing so I wanted to let you all know about Grammarly, a free browser extension that helps spell check and grammar check your online writing with things like social media posts and emails. There's also a premium version that can be integrated into your entire computer and into your document writing program like Microsoft Word. Secrets to a High-scoring IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay Using an Outline

06:46
Get our secrets to writing a high-scoring IELTS Writing Task 2 essay by using an outline to organize your ideas. Write this information down! Come back to ielts.allearsenglish.com If you are coming to IELTS from an academic writing background or from preparing for other tests like TOEFL you may have different ideas about how to prepare but IELTS is unique. You cannot use the same strategies that you used on TOEFL. Writing Task 2 is short. It's only 250 words. You have to follow a simple, clear outline of 4 paragraphs that will be applicable to every Task 2 question. Basic requirements for what to write: -Intro : 4 sentences- introduce the topic, introduce the two opinions, and your thesis statement (main idea of your essay) DO NOT overthink this. You don't have time to come up with a complicated thesis statement. You only have 40 minutes. Your thesis statement can be simple. You need to impress the examiner in the body of the essay. Body: Topic sentence, reason, specific examples Give more specific reasons for the main point of the paragraph and VERY specific examples and details about the reason. Every sentence must give the examiner new information. Don't say the same thing over and over. Being specific gets you high scores in every category except for grammar. Conclusion: It can be short. Just give a summary of your opinion and then give your opinion about the future. Most of your effort and time go into the body of the essay. Write this down! How to write a good essay: Paraphrasing the question

14:39
Do you sometimes struggle to begin writing an essay when taking an exam? Good news! There is an important writing skill that will help you improve your essay introductions. This technique is called "paraphrasing", and it means rewriting something using different words. In this lesson, I will teach you how to paraphrase successfully and how to change essay questions into your own words. These skills are very useful for university and high school students, as well as any students writing English proficiency exams like the TOEFL or IELTS. TAKE THE QUIZ: http://www.engvid.com/how-to-write-a-good-essay-paraphrasing-the-question/ WATCH NEXT: Essay Writing – 6 ways to compare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8WSzwBD7GQ TRANSCRIPT Hi, there. My name is Emma, and in today's video I'm going to teach you something very important for if you're taking any type of test that has a writing component. So, if you are taking the IELTS, the TOEFL, the CELPIP, even just a university test, it can be any type of test, but if you're asked to write something like an essay or a paragraph, this video is for you. Okay? So I'm going to teach you a very important skill that will help improve your marks when it comes to writing on tests. So, let's get started. So, I have here an essay question. This question is actually... I've seen it on the IELTS. You know, you have similar types of questions on the TOEFL, sometimes in university. The question is this: "Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country. Do you agree or disagree?" Or maybe: "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" So, this is an example of a question you might be asked. Now, a problem a lot of students have is in their answer to this question. They see this, and they think: "Okay, education is the most important factor in the development of a country, yes, I agree." So then they... Or: "I disagree", and they start writing. And what do they write? Usually the very first thing students will write is this: "I agree that education is the single most important factor in the development of a country because..." So, what is the problem with this? Is there any problem to start off your essay with something like this, or to start off your answer? There's a big problem. So I want you to take a moment and think: "What could be the problem with starting your essay off with this sentence?" Okay, well, if you noticed, you have here the word: "education, education, is, is, the single most important, most important factor". If you notice, these are the same. They're the exact same, except for: "I agree that" and "because". The student, here, has used the exact same wording that is in the question. So, if you do this on the IELTS-and many students do this, same with on the TOEFL-you actually will lose marks, and same with in university, because you're not showing your abilities; you're just copying what somebody else has said or what the essay question is. So, in this video, I'm going to show you first off... First off, I'm going to tell you: Don't do this, don't copy. And I'm going to teach you ways in order to improve yourself and your answer by changing this wording. How can you change your introduction so it's different than what the question is? Okay? So, let's look at how to make these changes. Okay, so what we are going to do in order to change the question into a proper answer that doesn't just copy the question, is we are going to paraphrase. So, the word here is: "paraphrase". This might be a new word for you. What does it mean to paraphrase something? Well, when we paraphrase, it means we take a sentence that, you know... We take somebody else's sentence and we change it into our own words. Okay? So, we change the words of a sentence, we also change maybe the sentence structure, but we keep all the same meaning. Okay? So, the meaning from the sentence you copy, it stays the same, same meaning, but different words and different sentence structure. Okay? So it's in your words, but this other person's meaning. So, we are going to paraphrase this example of a question into our own words. So, first we're going to look at how to do that using vocabulary and synonyms. So, we have here the same question: "Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country." How can we put this into new words or our own words that keep the same meaning? Well, we can use synonyms. So, this might be a new word for you, too. A "synonym". "Synonyms" are words that have the same meaning, but are different words.

How to Write the Perfect Essay

09:12
***FREE download of one of my successful Harvard essays: https://ivyadvise.com/p/welcome Writing the perfect essay is like drawing the perfect circle. Meaning that no matter what you do you'll always end up with a zero? No, meaning it's impossible, but with the right tools, you can get pretty darn close. You guys requested it, so I thought I'd share some of my best tips and tricks for writing essays. I've been writing essays for almost two decades now, so this video is a long one. Strap yourself in and get ready, 'cause this is about to be a ride. Also, the first essay format I give you comes from my French education on writing essays (i.e. start with a question, develop your ideas, answer the question, open essay up to new question). The second essay format I give you comes from my American education on writing essays (i.e. state a thesis, argue your thesis, restate your thesis). I'm partial to the French way of writing essays, because I think it makes more sense for life (i.e. you have a question you want to answer, you try to answer it, when you do you move on...). However, the American way of writing essays can be helpful for trying to argue a point. Write the way that you think will best suit you in your given circumstance! 11 Secrets to Memorize Things Quicker Than Others

10:46
We learn things throughout our entire lives, but we still don’t know everything because we forget a lot of information. Bright Side will tell you about 11 simple memorizing tips that will help you remember everything and improve your memory. TIMESTAMPS Why we forget things 1:04 How to remember everything 2:00 How to memorize something quickly 2:30 How to memorize something for a long time 3:20 Try to understand what you learn 4:17 Learn the most necessary information 5:11 Serial position effect 5:45 Interference theory 6:06 Learn opposite things 7:22 Build your own «mind palace» 7:22 Use «nail words» 8:19 Make up stories 8:40 Use a tape recorder 9:10 Visualize 9:51 Choose only the best materials 9:59 SUMMARY - Your brain is like a hard drive — the space is limited. Remember Sherlock Holmes? He couldn’t name all the planets of the Solar system — this was not because he missed school or something like that, but because he was too smart to have such irrelevant information in his memory. He deliberately erased facts he would never need. This is what your brain does: it protects you from overloading with information. That’s why all new data is stored in the short-term memory, not the long-term one. So, if you don’t repeat it or use it, you forget it very quickly. A German psychologist, Hermann Ebbinghaus researched the memory and its mechanisms. He described the Forgetting Curve which shows that just one hour after learning something new we forget more than half of the learned information. One day later we remember only about 30% percent. Well, you see where this is going. - There is a memorization technique called «Spaced repetition». To keep some information in your head for a longer time, you need to try to put it into your long-term memory. Forced memorization is not very effective in this case because your brain can’t make sense of the information quickly and form strong associations. Here it all depends on the reason why you are learning something. - To memorize something quickly, repeat the information right after learning it. The second repetition should be after 15-20 minutes. You don’t need to return to the information between repetitions — just rest and do something different. Let your brain relax. Repeat the learned material the third time after 6-8 hours. And you should have the final repetition 24 hours after the first contact with the information. Do you know any other memorizing tips? If yes, share them in the comment section below! 8 Common Grammar Mistakes in English!

06:27
"What's the different"? "Today morning"? "I enjoyed"? Improve your grammar by correcting the common mistakes in these English sentences. A good review for all students, especially at intermediate and advanced levels. Also check our full resource of 100 Common Grammar Mistakes in English at http://www.engvid.com/english-resource/50-common-grammar-mistakes-in-english/ Quiz: http://www.engvid.com/8-common-grammar-mistakes-in-english/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. I'm Rebecca from engVid. In this lesson, you'll have a chance to review eight common English errors. So, let's see how you do. The first one: "Today morning I woke up late." So, what's wrong with that? There is actually something wrong with each and every one of these. I'll tell you that in advance; there's no... There are no tricks here. Okay? So, what's wrong with that sentence? "Today morning I woke up late." Well, it should be: "This morning". Okay? We don't say: "Today morning". We say: "This morning". Number two: "What's the different?" What's the different? Well, that's wrong too, because "different" is an adjective. What you want to use here is the noun. So, what's the noun of this word? "Difference". "What's the difference?" Okay? This is a really common error, so make sure you don't make this one. Next one: "I met John two years before." Okay? What's wrong with that? Well, over here, we can't say: "I met John two years before." We can say: "I met two... I met John two years ago." All right? If you use the word "before", then you have to say before something. "Before I graduated". Okay? "Before I got married", or whatever. But you can't use "before" by itself. So the proper word there is "ago". "I met John two years ago." Next one: "This is a six-months course." That sounds almost okay, but it's not okay. So the mistake here is with the "s". When we use this expression, it becomes... The entire expression becomes an adjective for the noun "course". So we should say: "This is a six-month course.", "This is a million dollar contract." And so on. Okay? That's another... Each of these is a different element of grammar, different aspect of grammar, and so on. Next, number five: "Thank you. I really enjoyed." What's wrong with that? Well, the problem is here. "Enjoyed" is a reflexive verb, so you would need to say: "I really enjoyed myself.", "I really enjoyed myself.", "He enjoyed himself.", "She enjoyed herself.", "We enjoyed ourselves.", "They enjoyed themselves." Okay? So there are certain reflexive verbs in English, and we need to use them correctly. That's one of them. Very common one. Okay, number six: "Did you loose your cellphone?" What's wrong with that? I helped you a little bit by actually showing you where the error is. So, many people make this error. This is actually a spelling mistake. You should be spelling the word this way. "Did you lose your cellphone?" "Loose" is an adjective which means not tight, and "lose" is the opposite of "find". Okay? "Did you lose your cellphone?" Also, the pronunciation is "lose" and not "loose". Next one: "This is an academic course.", "This is an academic course." So, what was wrong with what I said there? Okay? So, what was wrong was my pronunciation of that. So many people mispronounce this word. It is not "academic". It is "academic". The stress is on the middle. Academic. "This is an academic course.", "This is an academic program." Okay? So, if... In case you make that mistake. I'm not saying you do. In case you do, make sure you correct it. Last one: "Yes, I have a free time." Is that...? What's wrong there? What's going on? Okay, here. We don't need to say: "A free time". We need to say: "Free time", because this is a... Time is an uncountable noun. Now, each one of these examples represents a different aspect of grammar. So, how can you possibly learn all of them? Well, I'll give you two easy ways to help you out. One is to go to our website: www.engvid.com, because there, we have currently I think more than 700 lessons on different aspects of English grammar and of English in general for exams, for writing, speaking, all kinds of things. And by watching them, you can find the lessons that you actually need. And the other thing is that we also have... I've written actually a resource which might help you, which shows 50 such common errors that people make in English, and that might help you out as well. Okay? So, I hope you did well, and I hope you continue to do better and better in English. All the best with your English. Bye for now.

Reading My Essay From My College Applications...

05:41
I wrote this when I hated writing. Hated it. Keep this in mind haha. College applications were a dark time in my life. But hey it got me into UC Berkeley so I guess I was doing something right? Essay: How hard can two weeks be? I thought. After a week of intensive training, I arrived at Jeou Fen Elementary school, perched on a mountain in Taiwan. With lesson plan in hand, I honestly believed I was ready. I was participating in the AID (Assisting Individuals with Disadvantages) program to teach English in rural villages. I had worked in a similar program in China two years before and felt well prepared for this experience. I was in for a huge surprise. “Teacher! We know these words already!” students immediately shouted. Everything went downhill from there. By the end of the day, I had not only thrown out my lesson plan, but had also exhausted discipline techniques I learned in training. My students could not have cared less about my authority. Because of my personal focus on school, I believed that my diligence would ensure success. I was angry at myself. How could I have been so naïve? The myriad of surprises on that first day of teaching caused me to let go of my expectations; no amount of training was enough to tackle this real-life task of teaching. In one day, I learned the difference between taking a class and teaching one. I was now the person in charge with no one to guide me. Realizing that teaching is an interactive process required me to adjust, based on students’ responses. During my China experience, I simply followed the schedule, and students gave me their hearts. Now, however, I faced ten-year-olds who demanded more, who saw me as a peer rather than an authority figure. This year, giving only my time was not enough; I also had to give myself. Regaining confidence, I tailored lesson plans to each day’s events. Every night I spent hours brainstorming different kinds of learning games and songs. My new, flexible mindset made teaching easier and much more effective. I felt proud when students excitedly raised their hands to participate. By the second week, lessons felt more like fun than work, and learning English had replaced swordplay with water bottles. My students now looked up to me. It was hard to believe that we had become so attached to each other so quickly. At our closing ceremony, I was touched when my students performed the songs that I taught them - even though their pronunciation wasn’t perfect. I discovered that I truly enjoyed teaching. This program helped me understand that working hard doesn’t guarantee success; one has to expect the unexpected and push through obstacles. In the end, I gained more than I gave. I went into the AID program thinking I had much to offer and ready to take on the task, but came out astonished at how much I, myself, had learned. Overcoming unexpected challenges makes any experience more meaningful. I discovered how powerful the ability to change can be. Now I look forward to change and challenges as opportunities to learn more about myself and what I am capable of achieving.
