First Fashion Hearing Aid EVER! | Signia Styletto Hearing Aid. Dr. Cliff Olson, Doctor of Audiology and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, discusses the First Ever Fashion Hearing Aid. Website: http://www.AppliedHearingSolutions.com Over the years, eyeglasses have went from a medical device that nobody wanted to wear, now individuals are wearing eyeglasses even if they don't have vision loss. The same thing is starting to happen with hearing aids. Signia released the Styletto Hearing Aids on August 27th, and they are truly the first Made For Fashion Hearing Aids on the market. With their slim and sleek design, they really are a completely new type or hearing aid. They come in three colors: 1. White and Gold 2. Navy and Gold 3. Grey and Brushed Nickel These hearing aids use lithium technology so they don't have to be the sames size as a traditional hearing aid that uses button cell batteries. They provide a full days use on one charge and they come with a battery pack that is smaller than a pack of cigarettes. This pack will give you up to 3 additional charges without plugging it into a power outlet. The Styletto is also on the Signia Nx Platform so you get many of the same features in this hearing aid. It doesn't have Bluetooth wireless capability, but it can use the TouchControl App. It doesn't have room for buttons or volume control so if you want to make adjustments, it does require the app. The Signia Styletto Hearing Aid is truly impressive. Just remember, no matter how good your hearing aid is, no hearing aid performs its best without having Real Ear Measurement performed on them. If you want to learn more about Real Ear Measurement, check out my video here: https://youtu.be/cHR0Oa6I-wY There is one major flaw of the Styletto Hearing Aid though. If you are the type of person that likes to match every outfit, you might have to buy more than one pair. 😀

Signia Styletto Connect Bluetooth Fashion Hearing Aid Review

09:57
Signia Styletto Connect Bluetooth Fashion Hearing Aid Review. Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, reviews the New Signia Styletto Connect. Website: https://www.AppliedHearingAZ.com About 6 months ago I reviewed the Signia Styletto hearing aid which, in my opinion, was the first hearing aid worthy of being called fashionable. If you want to see that video check it out here: https://youtu.be/D56Cr54G1FI The Original Styletto hearing aid was designed to be a fashion device on the Signia Nx platform, but in order to create their signature sleek design, they decided to sacrifice connectivity for style. The Nx Line of devices are well known for some unique features, but not having the ability to connect directly to a smartphone for streaming was a significant downfall for the Original Styletto. This is why the New Styletto Connect is a gamechanger. With the ability to now connect and stream audio directly from an iPhone, you don't have to chose between style and connectivity. You can stream phone calls, podcasts, and YouTube videos directly into both ears and also make remote control adjustments to your hearing aids. They have 3 different color options. 1. Black and Silver 2. White and Rose Gold 3. Navy and Rose Gold On a side note, my mother mentioned that if she needed a hearing aid, she would chose the Styletto in White and Rose Gold. 😂 Connectivity and Style aside, let's look at some of the other features of the Styletto Connect. 1. Rechargeability - You can receive 19 hours of battery life in 3 hours of charge time. It comes with a charger case that holds additional charges if you are traveling or are caught at the office after hours. 2. Own Voice Processing (OVP)- Getting used to your own voice being amplified can be made more tolerable using OVP. This feature recognizes your voice and reduces the amount of amplification given to your own voice. 3. Telecare Ready - The Styletto Connect devices can be remotely adjusted by your hearing care professional. This means that you can have adjustments made to your devices from the comfort of your own home. 4. Signia MyControl App - The app lets you make volume and program adjustments inside of your devices. You can also tell the hearing aid microphones which direction you want to pick sound up from. The app has a whole host of features you can adjust so make sure you take plenty of time to explore all it has to offer. As cool as the Styletto connect hearing aids are, there are a few things that bug me. 1. Battery Life - While I love rechargeability, you only get 19 hours of battery life which will likely be reduced by using direct streaming. 2. They have a fixed receiver wire - Receiver wires are the weak link of a hearing aid. When they go bad, they are typically an easy fix. However, these devices don't have interchangeable wires and need to be sent off for a week to Signia for repair instead of just having a simple in-office wire change. 3. No Push Button - While a button was avoided due to cosmetic issues, the only way to turn of your devices is to place them back in to the charger. You also can't pair your devices to a new phone because Bluetooth paring mode is initiated by turning off/on the devices. 4. No Telecoil - Telecoils dramatically improve how well you hear in background noise. But in order to save space, there is no telecoil. Real Ear Measurement: https://youtu.be/cHR0Oa6I-wY Negatives aside, Signia took the proper steps to making the Styletto Connect hearing aid a viable option from a connectivity and performance standpoint. While it does have some negatives, they were all required to achieve a fashionable device, and I for one, think they did an amazing job!

Hearing Aids Tips | Signia Styletto The First Fashion Hearing Aid In The World

11:30
Whether we are talking about the clothes we wear, the vehicles we drive or the accessories we use every day, everyone is concerned about style and fashion. As time goes by, aesthetics become more important to users. The medical field is following the trend. Of course, we think of eyeglasses, but not only that! The search for style and modernity is also important in the field of hearing aids. In addition to being more and more efficient, discreet and functional, hearing aids are becoming more and more aesthetic. Unfortunately, today, hearing aids refer to the notion of disability, bulky, unsightly devices, and are associated with the negative features of old age. It is a stigmatizing image. Widex Evoke Hearing Aid Review | First Hearing Aid with Machine Learning

09:33
Widex Evoke Hearing Aid Review | First Hearing Aid with Machine Learning. Cliff Olson, Doctor of Audiology and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, reviews the Widex Evoke Hearing Aid. Website: https://www.AppliedHearingAZ.com In terms of looks, the Widex Evoke has the same form factor that Widex has had for a while. This review is of the Widex Evoke Fusion 2 which is the Bluetooth version of the Evoke. They fit like a standard receiver-in-canal hearing aid, very slim behind the ear, and very comfortable. The evoke also comes in the smaller Passion model, the Fusion without bluetooth, the Fusion 2 which also includes a rechargeable model, a Fashion Mini BTE, Fashion traditional BTE, and a Power Version of the Evoke. The Evoke is best known for being the first hearing aid to utilize Machine Learning Technology. However, lets take a look at some other features that I like about the Evoke. 1. Telecoil - Widex didn't sacrifice the telecoil to use Bluetooth. A telecoil can tap into an induction loop in a public venue like a theater, conference center, or a church. I can also stream audio directly from a telecoil enabled telephone. 2. The 113 dB SPL Linear Input Range - Having a high input range is critical for hearing well in a noisy environment and for better music appreciation. The higher the input range, the better. It prevents the incoming signal from needing to be compressed. Combine the high input range with 4 Analog to Digital converters and you have a hearing aid that can better preserve the integrity of sound, allowing for a cleaner listening environment in nearly every situation. 3. The Sound Classifier - I love when a hearing aid can automatically determine which program settings are best. This means that the hearing aids are constantly surveying the environment to determine which settings are best so you don't have to. The Premium 440 level Evoke has 11 sound classifiers which helps to ensure you are always in the exact right settings for the environment. 4. The Zen Tinnitus Program - Widex is the only company who uses Fractal tones to mask tinnitus and reduce your annoyance level. The most popular Zen tone is "Aqua". You can use these Zen programs by themselves or in combination with another program. 5. Machine Learning - The Widex Evoke hearing aids have the ability to utilize Machine learning to help the hearing aids understand how you like to hear sound. By using SoundSense Learn and SoundSense Adapt, you teach the app which settings you prefer in each environment. You do this by picking between an A & B option while listening to your current environment. You do this until you get the settings exactly right. The adjustments that you make allow the Evoke to learn your preferences, and allow for better updates in the future. These hearing aids are truly revolutionary, but there are some things about the EVOKE that I’m not a huge fan of. 1. Rechargeability - The Evoke hearing aids use ZPower Silver-Zinc rechargeable technology. I currently prefer lithium batteries for their reliability. 2. Only 15 adjustment handles - When programming hearing aids, the more adjustment handles the better. This allows me to program the hearing aids more precisely to a prescription. In a premium level device, I prefer to see 20 adjustment handles. 3. Connectivity - While the connectivity is good with an Apple device, you can't stream directly from an Android device. You can use the App and its features with Android, but if you want to stream audio, you will need a streaming device. Considering what these hearing aids are capable of, the potential negatives seem relatively minor. However, as with any hearing aid, you will only experience the full capabilities of the Evoke hearing aids if you have been fit and programmed correctly. This includes Real Ear Measurement. If you don't know what Real Ear Measurement is, I highly recommend you watch my video: https://youtu.be/cHR0Oa6I-wY The Widex Evoke Hearing aid is truly an impressive device that is one of a kind. So, if you are looking for a hearing aid that allows you to make specific customizations on the fly, with the ability to become smarter over time, you may want to consider the Evoke for your next set of devices.

What Do Teens Want in a Hearing Aid? Top 3 Most Important Hearing Aid Features.

05:55
What Do Teens Want in a Hearing Aid? Most Important Hearing Aid Features & Considerations. Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, discusses the most important hearing aid features to consider as a Teenager. Website: https://www.AppliedHearingAZ.com I spend most of my time talking about hearing treatment for Adults. However, the listening demands for teens are perhaps even more complex than they are for adults. If you are a teen, you likely find yourself in dynamic and difficult listening environments likely due to your involvement in Junior High, High School, College, and all of the social settings you find yourself in outside of a classroom setting. So let's take a look at some of the key areas of interest when it comes to the Hearing Aid needs of Teens. 1. Being able to adapt to constantly changing environments - You probably find yourself in different listening situations constantly. Whether it is on a school bus, in a car, in a cafeteria, in a classroom, with a group of friends, or at a school sporting event, each of them require different hearing aid settings to hear optimally. 2. Connectivity - Let's face it, in the 21st century, to be socially engaged, you need to integrate with technology. The more connected your hearing aids are with technology, the more connected you are with family, friends, classmates, and even teachers. If you are like other teens, you are spending between 6 and 9 hours per day online. Connecting to social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, & Snapchat isn't only fun, it is almost a necessity. 3. Rechargeability - There is a good chance that the only thing you own that isn't rechargeable is your hearing aids. Just like a smartphone, teens want their electronics to be rechargeable. Charge them once at night and have them work the entire next day. These are just a few of the key things that Phonak learned from their Teen Advisory Board. Noticing the absence of Teen Voices in the Hearing Industry, Phonak selected 8 Teen advisors, 4 from the United States and 4 from Canada, to be on their Advisory Board board so Phonak could learn exactly what teens want in a hearing aid. Each one of these teens brought their unique experiences to the table to help shape Phonak’s perspective on what things are important to your age group. Phonak's new Marvel Hearing Aids check all the boxes when it comes to adapting to changing environments, connectivity, and rechargeability. The New AutoSense OS 3.0 automatically changes your program settings based on your environment. So if you go from a classroom to work to a restaurant or on a car ride with a friend, the Marvel operating system will adjust automatically to the settings that will help you hear best in that environment. Marvel hearing aids also connect to basically anything. Whether you have an iPhone or Android phone, they can stream audio directly into both ears. This means if you want to listen to music, podcasts, video games, or YouTube videos, you can do this from any device. Phone calls are completely hands free because the hearing aid microphones are used to pick up your voice and the push buttons let you answer and hang up a phone call. Marvel hearing aids also hold a massive 30 hours of battery life on a single charge. If you have long days and you stream a lot of audio, you need strong batteries. The lithium batteries charge super quick and hold that charge for a long time. No longer do you have to worry about your hearing aid batteries going out at the worst time. Lithium batteries have proven to be the most reliable Even if you do think you will run out of batteries, a quick 15 minute charge will get you 30 hours of additional battery life. As a Teenager, you are at a time when you can start making your own decisions on your hearing healthcare. You can also advocate for yourself and others with hearing loss. Start figuring out what is important to you and select hearing aids and a hearing care provider that can help accomplish your goals. There is no good reason to let hearing loss prevent you from doing anything that you want to do.

Signia Silk Nx Invisible Hearing Aid Review | Best Invisible Hearing Aids? - UPDATED

05:34
Signia Silk Nx Invisible Hearing Aid Review | Best Invisible Hearing Aids? Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem AZ reviews the Signia Silk Nx hearing aid. website: http://www.AppliedHearingSolutions.com Receiver-In-Canal (RIC) hearing aids are by far the most popular style of hearing aids on the market. However, recent consumer demand has forced hearing aid manufacturers to make their devices smaller and better performing than ever before. Signia, formerly known as Siemens, recently introduced their Silk Nx line of Invisible Completely-In-Canal (CIC) hearing aids. I find these hearing aids impressive for 3 main reasons. 1. They are ready to wear - They do not require a custom ear mold impression. You instead use different size click sleeves to match your ear canal size. They are comfortable and make the devices nearly undetectable. 2. Wireless connectivity - These devices have the capability to communicate with an Apple or Android Smartphone with the Sigia TouchConrol App without any additional hardware. They even have the ability to connect to the Silk CROS making them the smallest CROS option for individuals with single sided deafness (SSD). 3. Full-Featured Hearing Aids - These are not your cheap sound amplifiers that you find advertised on Facebook and Ebay. They are fully-customizable devices that have all the features of hearing aids significantly larger. They have Ear-to-Ear (e2e) capabilities allowing the devices to communicate with each other, helping you hear better in background noise. As great as these devices appear to be, there are two things that might be an issue. 1. They aren't custom - custom devices can fit all different sizes and shapes of ear canals. If you have odd shaped or extra large ear canals, these devices may not work for you. 2. They don't have custom venting - The click sleeves don' allow the capability to to control vent size which is critical to the performance of hearing aids with certain types of hearing loss. They only come in open or closed venting options. Cons aside, these hearing aids are impressive. However, even the best hearing aids on the planet don't matter unless you've had Real Ear Measurement performed on them. Don't know what REMs are? Watch this video: https://youtu.be/cHR0Oa6I-wY

How To Compare Hearing Aids | 11 Features You Should Look For

11:19
How to compare hearing aid features. Dr. Cliff AuD discusses which 11 hearing aid features you should compare between brands and which 4 features you shouldn't in this video. https://www.hearingtracker.com/hearing-aids/compare Let's cover the 11 Features you should use when comparing hearing aids. 1. Hearing aid style - There are several types of hearing aid styles from Invisible aids that are hidden in the ear canal (IICs) to powerful behind the ear (BTE) styles. You even have hearing aids that are called "fashion aids" that are designed to be aesthetically pleasing. 2. Amplification Capabilities - The perfect hearing aid style won't matter if it doesn't have the capability of meeting your hearing loss prescription. If you have a profound hearing loss, you won't be able to wear a tiny invisible device. You should always consider amplification capabilities when comparing devices. 3. Color - You have three approaches when considering color. Either you want them to be invisible, you don't care what they look like, or you want them to be fashionable. Either way, there are many hearing aid colors. 4. Telecoil - Telecoils are amazing pieces of wireless technology. They can help you connect to Looped facilities like Churches and Theaters. They can also help you hear better on a phone that is Telecoil ready. If you have a substantial hearing loss, you would be silly to overlook the telecoil. 5. IP Rating - An IP68 is the highest rating you can get. The first number indicates dust and particulate resistance (6). The second number is the moisture resistance (8). Most hearing aids will be very close to IP68, but it is smart to make sure. 6. Batteries - Disposable vs. Rechargeable hearing aid batteries. Disposable have been reliable for years, Rechargeable are changing the game in terms of convenience. Either way, make sure you understand the pros and cons of each. 7. Battery Size - If you do select disposable, you have a variety of sizes to choose from. The smaller the battery, the shorter the battery life. However, smaller batteries usually afford you a smaller hearing aid. Just make sure you identify if size or power are most important. 8. Phone connectivity - Soon all hearing aids will have the capability of streaming directly from a smartphone. Until then, you have to decide if you want direct streaming which requires an iPhone, or if you want to use a phone streamer that can connect with any smartphone. There are hearing devices that can stream directly from Android, but only phone calls, and only to one ear. 9. Tinnitus Feature - If you have tinnitus, you may want to consider a tinnitus masker inside of your hearing aids. There are a variety of tinnitus masking styles so make sure you evaluate them all before making a decision. 10. Push button availability - Most hearing aids have push button availability. However, you may want more than just a push button for program changes. You may also want a volume control. To allow for these features, you may need a larger hearing aid. Or, you can change these with a smartphone on most hearing aids. 11. Accessories - Different hearing aids have access to different accessories. Make sure you consider which accessories you may need or want and select a hearing aid that has access to these accessories. There are a lot of features worth comparing, however, there are also 4 features that you shouldn't compare. 1. Channels - Beyond a certain point, more channels does not equal better performance. Even the most experienced hearing aid user wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a 38 channel and 48 channel hearing aid. 2. Feedback Cancelers - All major hearing aid brands have good feedback cancellation. The biggest factor that will determine how much feedback you get will be the physical fit of the devices, and that is largely the responsibility of your hearing care provider. 3. Noise Reduction - Comparing noise reduction capabilities between manufacturers can be done, but the differences are minimal. 4. Any Trademarked Feature - All manufacturers name their features differently, but most of them do the same thing. You may feel that one name is more catchy than another, but this doesn't mean that it will perform any better. It always helps to have a resource for compare hearing aid features. At HearingTracker.com you can easily compare hearing aid features using their "Help Me Choose" personalized Hearing Aid Match Survey. Just fill out the survey and your personalized hearing aid recommendation will help you identify the right hearing aid for you. https://www.hearingtracker.com/hearing-aids/personalized-match-survey Just remember, this is just a starting point. You will need to consult with a hearing care professional to determine candidacy.

Using Machine Learning to Make Your Hearing Aids Better

06:07
Using Machine Learning to Make Your Hearing Aids Better. Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, discusses Machine Learning and how it makes your hearing aids smarter. Website: https://www.AppliedHearingAZ.com Widex: https://www.Widex.com When I say machine learning, you either think, "what the heck is that" or, you think of companies like Netflix. Netflix uses machine learning to predict what types of shows you prefer to watch before you know you wan't to watch them. However, what if I told you that not only could you improve your movie watching experience, but you could also improve the way your hearing aids perform. Imagine this: You receive a new set of hearing aids and have your hearing care provider program them correctly using Real Ear Verification. You go to a restaurant with your friend, only to find that while you can hear better, you still aren't hearing as well as you hoped. Normally, you would have to relay your experience to your hearing care professional so they could make adjustments at a follow-up visit. Well, what if instead you could make adjustments to your own hearing aids, while you are in that environment, with the help of Machine Learning? Machine learning is a branch of artificial intelligence that uses data to recognize patters to ultimately make decisions with minimal human intervention. This exactly what Widex is doing with the SoundSense Technology inside of their Widex Evoke Hearing Aids. The Evoke App lets you choose between two different sound samples while you are actually in a real listening situation. You simply identify what type of situation you are in, and what your goal is inside of that environment. The SoundSense learn feature will then create two different sound Profiles, one labeled A and one labeled B. Each option changes how you hear, in real time, in that environment. Once you determine which option you like best, you then indicate how much more you like it. Each time you perform this comparison, SoundSense Learn will calculate the most likely optimal setting for the next comparison. With the help of the Machine Learning inside of the SoundSense Learn App, you could take millions of different program settings, and optimize them within only 20 paired comparisons to maximize Sound Quality and Sound Comfort of your hearing aids. In a 2018 study published in the Hearing Review, http://www.hearingreview.com/2018/05/real-life-applications-machine-learning-hearing-aids-2/ , Researchers found that SoundSense Learn users reported better listening comfort and better sound quality. In a more recent 2019 study in The Hearing Review, http://www.hearingreview.com/2019/02/real-life-hearing-aid-benefit-widex-evoke-2/ , 72% of SoundSense Learn users reported an improvement in hearing, while 80% reported a willingness to recommend the feature to others. To illustrate just how unique individual listening preferences are, 13,000 users of SoundSense Learn created over 33,000 unique programs, with no clear trend of preferences between users. Not only do Widex Evoke Hearing Aids Utilize SoundSense Learn for custom hearing aid adjustments, they also have the capability of using SoundSense Adapt technology to allow your hearing aids to remember settings that you prefer in similar environments. This means that your hearing aids actually get smarter the more you use them. Widex can also has the capability of using this anonymous data collected by SoundSense Technology, combining it with data from other users around the world, which allows SoundSense technology to get smarter over time. At the end of the day, Machine Learning could help you hear better now, in all environments, and pave the way for improvements into the future. While it is cool to have Netflix know what I want to watch before I want to watch it, it is even cooler to have a hearing aid that can use very similar technology to improve the way you hear in a variety of listening situations.

Consumer Reports Hearing Aid Buying Guide Detailed Review

14:11
Consumer Reports Hearing Aids Buying Guide Review. Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, provides commentary on the Consumer Reports Hearing Aids Buying Guide. Website: https://www.AppliedHearingAZ.com Consumer Reports Hearing Aids Buying Guide: https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/hearing-aids/buying-guide/index.htm Consumer Reports is a non-profit organization that has been around since the 1930s. Their reviews are based on conducting in-house testing and surveys. The Buyers Guide discusses the prevalence of hearing loss with 48 million Americans experiencing some form of hearing loss. They also discuss the three types of hearing loss: Sensorineural, Conductive, and Mixed Hearing Loss. Understanding hearing aids discusses digital hearing aid technology and Analog devices. Despite Analog hearing aids being less complex than digital devices, digital devices are still easy to use. There are different features in hearing aids such as Wind noise reduction, Background noise reduction, and Bluetooth. The variations in devices can make identifying the best device very difficult. The Guide does give some incorrect information on the different hearing aid styles and Cons of these styles. Thy shoudl state that in general, there are 2 different styles: In-The-Ear (ITE) and Behind-The-Ear (BTE). There are several substyles within these. Discussing hearing aid features the report indicates that 33% of their survey respondents reported multiple hearing aid programs to be the most important feature. Other features included: Telecoil - A feature that communicates with a hearing loop to pull information from a telephone or public facilities that have a loop. This will give you better access to audio from these locations. Directional Microphones: These help hearing aids perform better in background noise by allowing these microphones to communicate with each other to determine which direction to pick up sound. Feedback Suppression: This helps prevent whistling of hearing aids, particularly with an open fit. Digital Noise Reduction: This allows hearing aids to remove noise from speech to improve speech understanding in background noise. Other Features: Include Bluetooth connectivity and Remote Microphones with are extremely beneficial for use with the telephone and in background noise. Selecting a Hearing Care Provider starts with a recommendation to see an Audiologist. Audiologists can be found in private practice settings and Wholesale clubs like Costco Hearing Centers. They do mention that you should ask if the hearing care provider is an Audiologist or Hearing Instrument Specialist. Both can dispense, but there is a disparity in training between the two professionals. Audiologists have to earn a doctorate degree in audiology and obtain over 1,000 clinical contact hours, and Hearing Instrument Specialist training varies widely and in some states requires no formal training. The guide does go over what you should expect from a hearing care provider. This includes convenient hours with repair services, a detailed consultation to determine your specific needs, and the necessity of seeing your hearing care professional regularly. Overall, the quality of your hearing aid performance directly depends on how good your hearing care provider is. Some shopping tips from the guide include: 1. Checking your insurance coverage. 2. Getting a detailed contract that allows for hearing aid returns in the case that you don't receive benefit. 3. Only buy what you need. There is no need to overspend on features that are unnecessary for your lifestyle. 4. Asking for a price break. Be careful with this one as the clinics that haggle are often the ones that will reduce your quality of care. 5. Look for bargains. Again, you usually get what you pay for. Focus too much on a bargain and you could find yourself receiving little benefit with hearing aids. 6. Getting social assistance. There are programs like Starkey HearNow that will help you obtain hearing aids for free if you meet low income requirements. When getting new hearing aids, the most important thing is that you have Real Ear Measurement performed on them. This is the only way to ensure your devices are programmed appropriately to your hearing loss prescription. Learn more about REMs in this video: https://youtu.be/cHR0Oa6I-wY The last thing they discuss is using a Personal Sound Amplification Product or PSAP if you aren't ready for hearing aids yet. These are NOT hearing aids, but can provide a boost to your hearing. Just be careful, the cheap ones can actually make you hear worse and can even damage your ears. Overall, the Consumer Electronics Hearing Aids Buying Guide, despite some inaccuracies, provides a good basic level understanding of hearing aids and treatment options.

The Best Rechargeable CROS Hearing Aids | Phonak CROS BR

06:35
The Best Rechargeable CROS Hearing Aids, the Phonak CROS BR. Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, discusses his favorite CROS hearing aid technology. My Website: http://www.AppliedHearingSolutions.com For years, Phonak has made my favorite wireless CROS and BiCROS Devices. Just when I though they couldn’t make them any better, they went ahead and made the new CROS transmitter Rechargeable. And in true Phonak fashion, they are using Lithium Battery technology just like the rest of their rechargeable devices. CROS Technology is a great solution for Single Sided Deafness (SSD). Lets discuss the 4 pros of the Phonak Audeo CROS BR. #1. Battery Life - The CROS BR gets over 20 hours of use with one overnight charge. The Achilles Heel of CROS doesn't seem to be a problem with this device. #2. Binaural Voice Stream - BVS give a 3.8 dB improvement with Speech in Noise performance. It works by sharing information between left and right ears allowing the devices to separate speech from noise. #3. It pairs with the Audeo BR Hearing Aid - The better the Audeo BR technology level, the better the performance. If you want automatic StereoZoom which allows for identification of the main speech source, you need to have the 90 level Audeo which I highly recommend. #4. The Charger - Not only does it have a space for a silica pack to dehydrate the hearing aids while charging, it also has a battery pack that gives you 7 full charges There are a few things that aren't so great about the CROS BR though. #1. You have to turn them on when pulling them out of the charger. This is an extra step that shouldn't exist. #2. If you forget to charge you're out of luck unless you have your charger. With Lithium, you can't use disposable batteries as a backup. #3. They are thicker than traditional Phonak CROS B devices. Not a big deal if you have enough space behind your ears, but this isn't something that all users have. Despite these issues, the Phonak CROS BR is still amazing. Just remember, it doesn't matter how good your CROS device or hearing aids are unless you have Real Ear Measurement performed on them. Want to learn more about Real Ear Measures? Are Hearing Aids Designed to Fail? | Planned Obsolescence

04:26
Are Hearing Aids Designed to Fail? | Planned Obsolescence. Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, discusses Planned Obsolescence and if it exists in the hearing aid industry. Website: http://www.AppliedHearingSolutions.com The consumer electronics world is well known for designing products that have a limited life-span. Some of these products are even designed to fail. Several weeks ago the Country of Italy fined Apple and Samsung for creating updates to their Operating Systems that make their older smartphones function slower. Back in 2003, YouTuber Casey Neistat, made a video about how Apple iPod batteries only lasted 18 months and it was cheaper to replace the device than replace the battery. Both of these are cases of Planned Obsolescence which, as the name implies, is the development of a product with the intent for it to someday become obsolete so it forces the purchase of a new product. What about hearing aids? Are they designed to become obsolete? Hearing aids can be repaired by "all-make" repair services no matter how old they are. If parts can't be found, parts can be made. There are nearly no limitations from a repair standpoint for hearing aids. How about programming? Hearing aid software can be obtained from the manufacturer no matter how old your hearing aids are. If it isn't already embedded in the current software, the manufacturer can be contacted to get a CD, Flashdrive, or web link to download it. Again, no matter how old the hearing aid, there is software to program it. When it comes to hearing aids, they are designed to last. You just have to find a hearing care provider who is willing to put in the work instead of just defaulting into a recommendation of new hearing aids.

Are EARLENS Hearing Aids Worth The Hype? | Earlens Reviews

06:42
Are Earlens Hearing Aids Worth The Hype? Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, reviews his experience with Earlens Hearing Aids. My Clinic Website: http://www.AppliedHearingSolutions.com Earlens Website: https://www.Earlens.com The Earlens light driven hearing aids are some of the most futuristic hearing aids available. Since their release in 2016 for commercial use, they have caught the eye of hearing aid users looking for something different to treat their hearing loss. In 2016, Dr. Cliff Olson was one of the first audiologists to dispense these commercially available devices. The concept of the Earlens hearing aid is simple: 1. The behind the ear processor picks up sound like a traditional hearing aid and converts the sound into and electrical signal. 2. This signal is sent through an ear wire to a light tip deep in the ear canal. 3. This electric signal is converted into an infrared light at the light tip that is deep inside the ear canal. 4. This light stimulates a lens that is on your eardrum and causes it to vibrate. 5. This amplified vibration mechanically moves the eardrum, causing you to hear. When you amplify sound with light, you enable an increase in high frequency amplification. This increase allows the user to receive more high frequency consonant sounds which supplies clarity to speech. Traditional hearing aids can only amplify to around 6 kHz, whereas the Earlens light driven hearing aid can amplify to 10 kHz. This increase bandwidth can potentially make speech and music clearer and more enjoyable. One of the other notable potential benefits is a reduced risk of feedback. Feedback is a whistling sound that can be caused by a leakage of sound from the ear canal and cycling through the microphone on the hearing aid. However, depending on the severity of your high frequency hearing loss, the mechanical movement of the eardrum could cause its own feedback issues. There are potential drawbacks to using Earlens. 1. The cost: You will likely spend over $12,000 to get a pair of Earlens hearing aids because of all the extra services required to get them. Not only do you have to see an Audiologist and ENT multiple times, you also have to pay for the innovative technology, and it isn't cheap. 2. Inconvenience: In addition to all of the extra visits, there are still issues with the technology. There have been cases where users smile and it cuts off the amplification because the light tip points away from the lens. No big deal until you realize you can't smile or it will cut off the sound. 3. Discretion: Earlens hearing aids are big. They also don't come in many colors so don't plan on having them be invisible. However, this may not be a big issue for you if don't care about looks. Earlens has some work to do in making their devices more dependable and easy to use. However, if you struggle with hearing aids that have been properly programmed using Real Ear Measures, you may want to give Earlens a try if you can afford it.
