How designers turn inspiration into fashion collections

05:11
How designers turn inspiration into fashion collections: In my previous videos, we talked about how to create a fashion collection. We will do more exercises now to better understand the steps of any collection. Apart from the text part of any documentation - the phase when you read a lot about the topic you are interested in- there is the visual documentation. In this case, I took another image from a book of mine and use it as a starting point for some sketches. How to actually get inspired by an image? Try to decompose the image into elements. See what are the definitory elements that compose the image. In this case, you could use elements like: the pattern with stripes, the color, the sleeves and the lower part of the costume, the structures you see in the area of eyes and those elements near the ears. Use them separately, combine them, use them as modules: big or small, rotate them and so on.I used the shapes near the ears and I placed them in the center of my costume. I imagined those shapes will have holes inside, so that you can see the skin or the layers of my costume. You can use the elements and place them in other parts of your costume. For example, some sleeves could become scarfs or you could undo them and sew them again in stripes to create a rhythm to your future garment. If you used a lot of volume for the upper part of your costume, try to simplify the rest, there is no need to over-work the whole costume. As about the drawing style, use details and a black marker to add the contrast here and there, where you feel the need. For the second drawing, turn the page upside down and get inspired. Even if the elements are the same, they position will inspire you to see even more in the photo, to discover inspiration there where you did not know it exist. See how used the "let's say glasses" from my source of inspiration and used them as earrings.Mix the elements and play with them in unusual combinations. When sketching, there is no need to think of the human body. You can draw it only when it helps, if not, the costume will be enough. Use simple lines and add color because this will help you visualize the outfit. Also, write down your ideas regarding the colors or textures to be used in the final work. And now sit back and see how I used another image to finish my small collection inspired by African art.As I previously mentioned, try to really sketch after the photos I used and send me your collection by email. My email is: [email protected] Waiting for your sketches and I will come back with a feed-back.Thank you and please don't forget to subscribe if you liked my video.

How to do fashion sketches step by step

06:34
I'm Ioana Avram, fashion designer. Welcome to my Fashion teaching channel where you will find design videos starting from basic, easy level ( for beginners ) until advanced level. Follow my advices regarding the hand draw: anatomy studies, fashion poses, figures and croquis, learn about style and craft, fabrics and how to create garments. I love painting and sketching, I like fabrics and fashion magazines and especially pencil, ink and watercolor technique. I believe anyone can draw after practicing a while because all you need is work, work, work and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. :) I made this channel to prove that it's ok to have talent, but not necessary. Through my one of a kind technique you will see how easy it will be to draw from now on. You will learn more about fashion and everything related to it: composition, shading, textures, different techniques and especially learn how to draw fashion sketches all by yourself. I will post new videos each Thursday so don't forget to subscribe. I will do my best to answer all comments. Ask anything you want, and feel free to leave any suggestions for future videos! All are taken into consideration. For more info visit my website fashion-teaching.com. Thank you and take care! FAQ: 1. What materials do you use for your drawings? ****************************************************** I use Toison d'Or or Koh-I-Noor pencils ( from 4B to 8B), Copic markers, Derwent coloured pencils, Canson paper or Fabriano paper, Factis eraser, metal pencil sharper and Winsor and Newton watercolors and ink. 2. Did you go to any art school or academy? ****************************************************** Yes, I studied design and fashion design ( for 4 years) at the University of Arts and Design in Cluj, Romania, Europe. I had a scholarship in Katowice, Poland and another one in Coburg, Germany and a course attended with Gary Tu - a well-known fashion illustrator from Taipei, Taiwan. 3.Where do you get your inspiration? ****************************************************** Basically I am very interested in any image and text that could grab my attention: fashion albums, history of art, books I read, movies I see...In fact, i will share below all my sources of inspiration. Find all my inspirational folders here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/397137153755499/photos/ 4. Do you have any links or books you can recommend? ****************************************************** Definitely I would recommend Gottfried Bammes' Anatomy, Barcsay's Anatomy and David Downton's illustrations that you will find here: http://www.daviddownton.com/ and here: http://instagram.com/daviddownton 5. How long have you been drawing? ****************************************************** 30 years ago some desperate parents interdicted their 3 years old child to use pencils to draw on their house's inner walls :). Due to this, and to the fact that all pencils, brushes and markers were forbidden, the child found another way to express: all chocolate received was hidden and used to "decorate" the walls when all other tools were not available.30 years later, here I am, willing to tell a story on every wall there is. Not with chocolate, like I used to :), but in watercolors, as you can find on my shop here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/bijuterra. Thank you, and hope to enjoy my illustrations and videos from your comfortable armchair, having a cup of warm milk in your hand and smiling. 6. How can I send my drawing to you? ****************************************************** For any personal advice you can send me your illustrations or questions here: [email protected] and I will reply. Thank you! 7. Hey design champions! Today I'm in the early stages of creating a logo for a fashion and lifestyle brand called free candy brand. Fashion Illustration for Beginners- Drawing Colorful Clothing Digital Fashion Illustration

Fashion Illustration for Beginners Drawing Colorful Clothing Digital Fashion Illustration-This one is one of my favorite illustrations! Her colorful skirt and hot pink blouse give this piece a mood- A happy one! The floral print skirt can be any print you want. Drawing colorful clothes can be a great exercise in color theory. The more colorful, the better. As long as the skirt has the color of the shirt in its print, you are good! I created this on my iPad with Apple Pencil and Procreate App. MUSIC CREDITS-Chan Redfield for Elaine Biss. Thank you so much for watching my video! How a Dior Dress is Made | Visionaire | Refinery29

04:28
Subscribe to the Refinery29 channel: http://bit.ly/subscribe-to-r29 “Couture” is a magic word. It conjures thoughts of impeccable craftsmanship, visionary design, and legendary fashion moments. But, most of us don't encounter haute couture very often, unless we're looking at a celebrity on the red carpet, a model on a catwalk, or a mannequin in a museum case. We wanted to get closer to couture — and to get you closer to couture — so we partnered with the legendary fashion publisher Visionaire to create this video, which tells the story of one dress from birth to runway. It’s a unique look inside the Dior atelier, where the team has been hard at work bringing creative director Raf Simons’ ideas to life. While an individual couture garment can take half a year to produce, here you will see the story of one dress (“Look #53,” in fashion-speak) come together in just a few minutes — from the first muslin pattern to the final style model Kinga Rajzak wore during yesterday’s haute couture show. It’s an incredible revelation, and when you discover what goes into these garments, the crazy prices on couture start to seem at least a little less crazy. While Look #53 is the star of the show, the video gives us the chance to reconnect with the rarely credited artisans and seamstresses we saw in Dior and I, as well as a cameo from Simons himself. Think of this as a mini-trip to Paris or a crash course into fashion’s highest form; either way, enjoy your couture, concentrated. What Does it Take to Be A Fashion Designer?

06:17
Click for more: http://ww2.kqed.org/artschool/ Oakland high school student Zachary Fernandez made it to the finals on the first season of Project Runway Junior, then headed straight back to Oakland School of the Arts to continue his education as a designer. His newest collection, Kathmandu, was inspired by recovery efforts in Nepal after the devastating 2015 earthquake. Art School followed Fernandez's process as he sketched, sourced fabric, and designed his new project, revealed at a culminating fashion show in spring 2016. Hi, my name is Zachary Fernandez and I'm currently a fashion student. So I am starting my Kathmandu 2016 collection. My collection's gonna be debuting at my school fashion show, and so I have little under seven weeks to get this all put together. So our school assignment was to pick a city that we wanted to be inspired by for this collection. I ended with Kathmandu, Nepal, all of the trouble that they went through last year was really inspiring and I was able to take those ideas of imbalance and the destruction of culture and apply that to this new collection. These are the pieces that I ended up designing. They're ever-changing and they kind of just are always in flux. My sketching process involves a lot of images, a lot of mixed medias, I like to do collages, watercolors, acrylic paste, it's a real reflection of what my mind looks like. Here you have the final sketches that I've done. The sketching process for me is really a major step between just ideas and kind of this fantasy world that I've created in my mind to really functional wearable pieces. Fabric sourcing is one of my favorite things to do. It's really like a group activity, like meet a couple of friends, we'll just go, we'll explore the city, we'll get inspiration. So I'm looking for like a very pale blue that's almost like very silverish, and then I'm gonna be looking for a very deep, rust orange color. Okay, so I need to find this, but more grayish blue. The fabric store is one of those places that you go in with one idea and one concept and one thought, and you come out with like 500 more. This is it. - This is it! - This is it. - [Girl] Dude! - Hey! Yes! So I spend the majority of my time draping and it's definitely a part that will make or break a piece. I take a piece of muslin, which is just a really basic blend fabric, and I started sculpting it to the dress form. And then those mock-ups that I make of the dress form are then fitted to the model, and sometimes I try them on a model, I'm like, this is hideous, I don't know why, it just overpowers her or something happens and that leads to even better ideas and even more just, creativeness. When you design while you create, I just think it takes so much longer and you like pressure yourself so much more. So, my design mind is turned off. And it's just about sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing. So after I finish draping, I take a part of that mockup and I totally seam rip it and I re-pattern it, and then I cut out of my real fabric. It's always really nerve-wracking 'cause a lot of times the fabric's all that you have, either the budget doesn't allow for you to get more fabric, or there's simply not anymore left. It has this like box-like structure in it. The box is actually lined with horse-hair so that it can kind of take the shape and that's why I'm kind of trying to like manipulate it right now 'cause it just takes on whatever shape you really need it to. The show, oh the show. Six days, and I'm still cutting up fabric like, I don't think that's normal. There's always going to be that last minute hurry up and finish like state of being. I have a picture in my mind about how this is supposed to go, but who knows if it actually go that way. I think that there can be a lot of different ways to read the look. Obviously you look for like the main things like color, silhouette, is this an evening piece, is this a day piece and you just kind of put the garment and choose certain categories and that really helps people read fashion out, by the time the piece is on the runway I'm already thinking about a whole new collection and I'm really thinking something totally different, but it doesn't really hit me that these people, for them it's the first time that they've seen this. I've spent months and months planning and sketching and putting it together. If I see all these different things in these pieces, but no one else does, then it's kind of sad, but then it's also part of what makes fashion art, is because people see it in so many different ways. We are in my home, studio, bedroom combination in Berkeley, California. I have this look from Project Runway Junior, which was the first episode, and this look for my most recent collection. They really mean a lot to me 'cause they show how much progress I've made within the last four, five months.
