A company in Estonia claims to have the answer - a shape-shifting robot mannequin. Fits.Me has come up with a device that takes a customer's body measurements and changes itself to mimic their shape. The customer can then accurately see how an item of clothing will fit in what Fits.Me calls a 'virtual fitting room'. Fits.Me's moveable mannequins are adjusted to show how the garment will look on just about any type of body shape. The results of the mannequin's work are displayed on the given clothing retailer's website. Fits.Me says thanks to their product, customers get a far better idea of how an item will look when worn than by using current approaches. And most returns are due to bad fit. The robot mannequins can help lower the costs to retailers by reducing the number of returned items. Launched in 1975, Zara now has almost 2000 stores in 77 countries. Its parent company, Inditex, turned over $17 billion last year, helping reclusive founder Amancio Ortega -- a railway worker's son -- become the 7th richest man in the world. Zara's HQ is a futuristic building known as "The Cube" in La Coruña, northwestern Spain. From there, staff churn out 30,000 designs a year, near carbon copies of fashion's big names. Lightning-fast, locally-targeted designs are Zara's specialty: when Madonna played three weeks of European concerts in 2001, teenage girls went to her later shows wearing knock-offs of the outfit from her first performance. Zara's 'vertically integrated' business model limits outsourcing, making most of its catwalk copies in-house and ensuring better quality control. When it does use cheap labour, it mostly uses poorer European countries over the developing world. Garments hit shop floors within three weeks of design -- blitzing the industry average of six months. Fashion used to be sold in four seasons. Zara wants you to buy for one-hundred-and-four. New clothes arrive in every store twice a week -- days known by fans as "Z Days" -- and fuel the need to turn over your wardrobe. The brand's global distribution centre, also in Spain, moves 2.5 million items per week. Nothing remains warehoused longer than 72 hours. Clothes are ironed in advance and packed on hangers with security and price tags affixed, saving store staff 'prime selling time'. Records are kept of any clothes tried on but not bought, sent back to Spain along with all cash register data. Customers visit Zara on average six times more often than its competitors, causing rival stores to dread its arrival on their turf. When Zara opened a store in China last year, one industry commentator noted "it just murdered everything around it". And when the doors of Zara's first Australian store opened in Sydney in April, 80% of the stock was snapped up within three minutes. Shoppers might love Zara but fashion's elite are not so happy. One unnamed designer complained "we spend a fortune researching and working up ideas, then Zara comes along and walks off with them for nothing". I was at these event, VTEX Day, the largest e-commerce event in Brazil, and they had a full section dedicated to online apparel retail, with a lot of discussions, representatives of Brazil's main fashion e-commerce stores were there, including Amaro, Dafiti, Privalia, to name a few. They are real giants in the industry and you could tell that there was this huge interest among the participants to see what they had to tell. So that is a great indicative that fashion e-commerce industry is booming here in Brazil, and if that doens't convince you, here are 5 items that will make you consider Brazilian shoppers in your expansion strategy! Fashion is the leader in the number of e-commerce sales in Brazil. E-commerce in Brazil had a revenue of around 12 billion dollars in 2017, with a growth rate of 7.5%. Fashion and Accessories accounted for 14% of all e-commerce orders. Brazil is in the top 10 countries in global e-commerce. Almost half of all online shoppers in Brazil have already made a purchase in an international e-commerce and Brazil is among the 10 top countries when it comes to cross-border e-commerce numbers. The top retailer? Aliexpress, followed by amazon, ebay, apple and light in the box. What at least 3 of them have in common? Selling Fashion itens and accessories. Around 22,4 million Brazilian shopers bought in intrnational websites. And 33% of those bought products from the fashion and accessories category. Brazilian woman follow international fashion trends. Brazilians are constantly connected to the internet and social media platforms. Brazil ranks fourth in the world for having the most internet users and smartphone penetration is on the rise. The second largest user base of Instagram was Brazil with 57 million monthly users. They see these trends, and they want to buy those products, and if they can't find it in brazil, which is a very common thing, they will turn to international websites, and that's your queue. Clothing is (super) expensive in Brazil. Even when they find the product, importantion taxes are super high and the price of international items sky rocket when sold by a local store. Therefore, the demand for international websites is huge! Offer them the payment methods they like. You can become a first-mover. There are many regional gaps in Latin America, caused by high taxes and a complex importation process, that can be filled international companies, especially online ones, since this kind of business does not require a physical presence. Companies that can offer innovative products, as well as better prices and quality, have a great chance of success in the region. And be the first mover.
