Big changes in the Sargasso Sea
The Sargasso Sea occupies almost two thirds of the North Atlantic Ocean. Within this sea, circling ocean currents accumulate mats of Sargassum seaweed that shelter a surprising variety of fishes, snails, crabs, and other small animals. A recent paper by MBARI researchers shows that in 2011 and 2012 this animal community was much less diverse than it was in the early 1970s, when the last detailed studies were completed in this region. This study shows that animal communities in the Sargasso Sea are definitely changing. The next step is to find out why. Sargasso Sea
The Sargasso Sea is a region in the gyre in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. It is bounded on the west by the Gulf Stream; on the north, by the North Atlantic Current; on the east, by the Canary Current; and on the south, by the North Atlantic Equatorial Current. This system of ocean currents forms the North Atlantic Gyre. All the currents deposit the marine plants and refuse they carry into this sea. The Sargasso Sea is 1,100 km wide and 3,200 km long (700 statute miles wide and 2,000 statute miles long). It stretches from roughly 70 degrees west to 40 degrees west, and from 20 degrees north to 35 degrees north. Bermuda is near the western fringes of the sea. The ocean water in the Sargasso Sea is distinctive for its deep blue color and exceptional clarity, with underwater visibility of up to 200 feet (61 m). This video is targeted to blind users. Sailing The Bermuda Triangle and The Sargasso Sea
In June of 2016 I crewed on a Yacht delivery from Fajardo, Puerto Rico to the Outer Banks, North Carolina by way of Bermuda due to a storm that was bearing down on us. The Yacht was a 45' Dufour Sloop; S/V Cunning Plan. Follow along our adventure from Puerto Del Rey Marina to Saint George's Bermuda and on to the Oregon Inlet and the Outerbanks, North Carolina. From Squalls to engine failure to a scrambled auto pilot we came across a have sunken dismasted sailing vessel dodged reefs in Bermuda and lost our rudder in the Oregon Inlet. FAU OSLS - Secrets of the Sargasso Sea - Brian Lapointe, Ph.D.
Florida Atlantic University Harbor Branch Ocean Science Lecture Series Secrets of the Sargasso Sea Brian Lapointe, Ph.D. For over five centuries, the Sargasso Sea has been a subject of lively debate among explorers and scientists alike. Named for its characteristic brown seaweed Sargassum, the boundary of the Sargasso Sea is now defined by the currents that surround this unique "sea without a shore" - also known as the North Atlantic Central Gyre. Dr. Lapointe will share a number of "secrets" about this mysterious oceanic realm, some of which date back to the historic voyage of Christopher Columbus. He will describe the discovery of Sargassum by early explorers, the phenomenon of the "Bermuda Triangle", and the amazing community of invertebrates and fishes supported by Sargassum "weedlines". Dr. Lapointe will show outtakes of a documentary of the Sargassum community that he and NHK Broadcasting (Tokyo, Japan) collaborated on in 1997. He will close by describing his recent studies of the impacts the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on the "essential fish habitat" provided by pelagic Sargassum. About the Speaker: Dr. Brian Lapointe has studied nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus), algal growth, and eutrophication at Harbor Branch for the past 28 years. He has authored over 85 publications in the field of biogeochemistry, algal physiology, and nutrient pollution and is internationally recognized for his work in marine conservation. His early research in the 1980s, supported by the National Science Foundation, focused on the ecology of the pelagic brown seaweed Sargassum. That research showed the importance of coastal nutrient runoff and associated fishes to the productivity and nutrition of Sargassum. Dr. Lapointe and colleagues from the University of South Florida are currently funded by NASA to use satellite imagery to monitor the abundance and nutrition of pelagic Sargassum in the Gulf of Mexico. This research represents major progress in our understanding of the variability of Sargassum, particularly the role of nutrients from the Mississippi River plume to blooms of Sargassum in the Gulf of Mexico. This research will help management of coastlines from Texas to Florida, which have been increasingly plagued by accumulations of excessive Sargassum biomass in recent decades.

Plastic Pollution and the Sargasso Sea - Kickstarter
KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN! - kickstarter.com/projects/1452100454/showing-the-real-face-of-plastic-pollution-in-our The Ocean covers 71% of our planet, and yet, only 2% is protected. 50% of our oxygen comes from the ocean, yet there are already 405 reported dead zones in the oceans. It has been estimated that OVER 14 BILLION POUNDS of trash created on land are dumped into the oceans each year, including plastics, sewage, oil and toxins. 10% of the world oil supply is used to make and transport disposable 'single use' plastics. In America alone, over 35 billion plastic bottles are discarded each year, many of which, end up in our oceans. The non-biodegradable trash floats in the ocean until it becomes part of a gyre. The North Atlantic Trash Gyre, in the Sargasso Sea, is distinct for it's dense mats of sargassum algae, which creates a nutrient rich habitat and unique ecosystem on the surface of the sea. As the plastic particles break into increasingly smaller particles, a large number of marine organisms consume the trash particles which can lead to internal blockage, dehydration, starvation, and potentially death. There are now 5 major plastic gyres across the globe. 70 Degrees West will create a visual assessment of pollution in the oceans, specifically, the North Atlantic Gyre in the Sargasso Sea. We will focus on the effects of pollution on the marine life that live in the sargassum and migrate through the Sargasso Sea - sea turtles, sargassum shrimp, flying fish, zooplankton jellyfish, sperm and humpback whales.

In search of the new Sargasso sea
During a scientific expedition from June 19 to July 13, 2017 aboard ANTEA, a ship of the French Oceanographic Fleet, a team of researchers carried out an important sampling of the fauna and flora associated with the « rafts of the Sargassum ». These brown pelagic algae present in the tropical Atlantic have been stranded since 2011 on the Atlantic coasts, because of the ocean circulation. They are responsible for important environmental, health and economic problems, especially in the West Indies and French Guiana. The researchers and teacher-researchers of the IRD, Aix-Marseille University, the University of the West Indies and the University of Western Brittany made a journey of 25 days between French Guiana, the West Indies and the Sargasso sea. Discover their work of locating, sampling and analyzing sargasses, in this film directed by IRD Images. Production: IRD Images Director: Hubert Bataille Scientific advisors: Thierry Thibaut, Jean Blanchot, Sandrine Ruitton. Duration: 20 minutes Date: May 2018

The Sargasso Sea and the Pacific Garbage Patch
Today we're going to sail the oceans blue, through the wind and spray, at least until we become mired in two remote wastelands said to be the bane of mariners: The Sargasso Sea in the middle of the Atlantic, and its companion on the other side of the globe, the Pacific Trash Vortex. Both areas are encircled by swirling ocean currents, and are said to collect their debris in the center. Both are the subject of tall tales. Both are ripe for skeptical inquiry. The Sargasso Sea Let's start in the Atlantic. The Sargasso Sea is actually a named sea, and it's the only one in the world with no shorelines, being completely enclosed within the North Atlantic Ocean. It's a 2,000,000 square mile oblong oval stretching across the Atlantic, centered on about 30°N latitude, bounded by major clockwise ocean currents. It's best known in stories for being a dense mat of solid seaweed, a tangled mass t... (Read the rest at http://skep.us/4132)
