Java is a general-purpose, class-based, object-oriented computer programming language that was designed by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems in 1995. Key Highlights of Java: Platform Independent: This allows programmers to develop applications that can run on any operating system. Usability of Java: Java is most widely used programming language. It is present everywhere. It really doesn't matter which domain you are working in, you will surely come across Java sooner or later! Open Source: The good news is that Java is available for free! All the development tools and the environment (JRE & JDK) that is used to develop Java applications are absolutely free of cost. Android: Irrespective of the fact that you are tech savvy or not, most of us are badly bitten by the Android bug! Android is in great demand today and fortunately you need Java for Android development. Hence, the importance of Java has increased even more. Hadoop: Hadoop is one of the most trending framework for processing Big Data. It has been designed and developed in Java. In spite of having a tough competition on the server side from Microsoft and other companies, Java is doing extremely well on mobile platforms, thanks to Android! It has also been the primary language for Hadoop Developers. About Java, Sun and Oracle

06:01
Java software runs on everything from laptops to data centers, game consoles to scientific supercomputers. 1991 - James Gosling, Mike Sheridan, and Patrick Naughton initiated the Java language project James Gosling has invented java and had many rounds of coffee when he got the idea. Initially named as Oak (after Oak tree near Gosling’s office), then it got changed to Green and finally got its JAVA name from Coffee. The name is selected after discussing with his mates as he wants something that was cool, unique, and easy to spell and fun to say. Gosling designed Java with a C/C++-style syntax that system and application programmers would find familiar. Java uses coffee cup logo interesting!!! 1995 - Sun Microsystems released the first public implementation of Java as Java 1.0 2006, Sun released Java virtual machine (JVM) as free and open-source software, (FOSS), under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). 2010 – Oracle acquisition of Sun and pledged to foster its growth On April 2, 2010, James Gosling resigned from Oracle. Sun Microsystems (Feb 24, 1982 to Jan 27, 2010) Founded in 1982 by Vinod Khosla, Andy Bechtolsheim, and Scott McNealy, all Stanford graduate students. Bill Joy of Berkeley, a primary developer of the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD), joined soon after and is counted as one of the original founders. The Sun name is derived from the initials of the Stanford University Network Oracle acquired Sun for $7.4 billion in 2010 and merged with Oracle America Inc. Sun’s product range include Servers, Workstations, Storage, Solaris, Java, MySQL, Services, Engineered systems and Networking. Oracle Corporation (founded in June 16,1977): 2016 revenue figures - $37 billion with net income of $9b, assets of $112b, Employees ~136,000 Specialization in database software and technology, cloud engineered systems and enterprise software products. Company Profile: Sun Microsystems Inc (JAVA)

01:10
Prior to Sun Microsystems acquisition by Oracle, the company was a leading maker of UNIX-based servers used to power computer networks and Web sites. It also made workstations and disk- and tape-based storage systems. Sun's computers utilized the company's own chips (SPARC microprocessors) and operating system (Solaris). Its software portfolio included application server, database management, office productivity, and network management applications. The company also developed Java, a programming language used to create applications for computers, Web browsers, mobile phones, and other consumer electronic devices. Sun Micro was acquired in 2010 by Oracle for about $7.4 billion in cash. Oracle's offer was valued at about $5.6 billion minus Sun's cash and debt. The acquisition was designed to allow the software giant to offer integrated software and hardware systems for business applications

Tutorial Java Sun Solaris Microsystem

06:49
Sun Microsystems Founders Panel

02:10:37
[Recorded Jan 11, 2006] Scott McNealy, Andy Bechtolsheim, Bill Joy and Vinod Khosla, with moderator John Gage share their personal stories of the early days at Sun.

When Xerox PARC loaned the Stanford Engineering Department an entire Alto Ethernet network with a laser printer, then-graduate student Andy Bechtolsheim redesigned it into a prototype and attached it to Stanford Universitys computer network. Sun Microsystems grew out of this prototype, and the companys name came from the acronym for Stanford University Network (SUN).

The company was incorporated in 1982 by three 26-year-old Stanford
alumni: Bechtolsheim, Vinod Khosla and Scott McNealy. The trio soon attracted UC Berkeley UNIX guru, Bill Joy, who led software development for the new company. By its second birthday, Sun had grown to more than 400 employees. Most recently, Sun Microsystems was acquired by Oracle.

Java and the Shadow of Sun

So Oracle has decided that it has no interest in Java any more. But really, Oracle is simply using the playbook it was given when it acquired Sun Microsystems. It's time to reevaluate Sun's legacy as an Open Source "leader", especially when so many missteps and so much dysfunctionality attributed to Oracle is really just a continuation of how Sun behaved. CON8342 - Improving the Performance of Your Java Application: Getting Beyond the Basics

50:47
Most Java applications are used in performance-critical situations where a small gain in responsiveness or throughput can mean success or failure. Typical applications have some low-hanging fruit, and improving this can lead to significant performance gains. The challenge is finding where the next gains will come from. This session demonstrates how Oracle Performance Analyzer can help identify performance opportunities in the most aggressively optimized applications and how you can drill down into the data to isolate and fix performance bottlenecks. Speakers: Martin Itzkowitz, Senior Principal Software Engineer, Oracle Marty Itzkowitz received an A.B. degree from Columbia College and a Ph.D. in Chemistry and Physics from CalTech. After a post-doctoral fellowship at UC-Berkeley, he worked on operating systems and distributed services at LBL. Optional - The Mother of All Bikesheds by Stuart Marks

58:43
Subscribe to Devoxx on YouTube @ https://bit.ly/devoxx-youtube Like Devoxx on Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/devoxxcom Follow Devoxx on Twitter @ https://twitter.com/devoxx The Optional class was introduced in Java 8 in order to solve a narrow but frequently occurring problem: what to return if you have nothing to return. It is a single class with less than 20 methods, but it turns out to have been one of the most controversial and most misunderstood APIs, having generated several "centithreads" of discussion on OpenJDK mailing lists. Indeed, Brian Goetz (Oracle's Java Language and Libraries Architect) has mentioned that one aspect of Optional was his biggest mistake in Java 8. Optional is also one of the more widely misused APIs. A brief survey of OpenJDK code revealed several embarrassing examples of Optional usage, and expert Java programmers have admitted to not making the most of this API. This session covers the history and rationale of Optional, provides recommendations and examples of proper and effective usage, shows several antipatterns and code smells and how to fix them, and finally describes some current and proposed work on Optional for Java 9. Stuart Marks is a Principal Member of Technical Staff in the Java Platform Group at Oracle. He is currently working on a variety of JDK core libraries projects, including Collections, Lambda, and Streams, as well as improving test quality and performance. As his alter ego "Dr Deprecator" he also works on the Java SE deprecation mechanism. He has previously worked on JavaFX and Java ME at Sun Microsystems. He has over twenty years of software platform product development experience in the areas of window systems, interactive graphics, and mobile and embedded systems. Stuart holds a Master's degree in Computer Science and a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. [VXM-7030]

Best Way to Get Java Certified

03:12
What is the best way to get Java certified? Go to the Oracle education site. I want to get Java certified, not Oracle certified. Oracle created Java, too. The education.oracle.com website has information on how to get Java SE7 certified. It does not mean they have the type of training I want or the training I need, though I can understand if they have the certification courses. They have certification exams. Even diploma mills usually require you to submit something. Oracle offers exam prep seminars if you’ve studied by yourself but want their review course before paying to take the exam. What are the other options for taking training classes for Java? Oracle has live virtual class training for those who cannot get to an in-person class at various locations and downloadable training as well. What type of classes do they have? The Oracle courses range from the Oracle database administration classes to Sun Microsystems to Java programming language. Sun Microsystems are described as perfect cars that run on only 2% of the roads, whereas Microsoft cars go everywhere but crash every hour. That’s why Unix became so popular. Java application development is one of the most popular courses they teach, so you can create Java applications that work on their Oracle servers and interface with Sun. That means the Java is just middleware. It is actually called the Oracle Java and Middleware certification. That does not have much respect – or clarity of what it does. It shows that you can design applications that link their application servers, databases and business intelligence tools like JD Edwards. I just need Java skills and certification to prove I have the Java skills. If you’re just looking at Java certification, take the Java SE6 or SE7 exam after taking one of the classes, reading the books and taking a review seminar or really, really reading a lot about it. What levels do they have? The basic level is the associate level certification, which has three options. For that, you take the Java SE whatever the current version is fundamentals exam. Which means I’m not worth enough to be paid for the skill-set. The professional level has three options. Professional level requires taking the programmer 2 exam. I like the idea of being able to say Java Oracle considers me a professional. The certified master has three levels. It requires being a certified professional already and then taking at least one of their advanced classes. That would be easy to do with all their online classes. The online courses do not count toward the requirements for becoming a certified Java master. It has to be training on demand, live virtual classes or an instructor led class. Why? Are they afraid the advanced people might break-in and change their course credit, if not in the room or live session with someone? Of course Java is afraid of getting attacked; they already get exploited once a year. That they take precautions with their professional certifications does not make me feel better. Neither does the price tag for their courses, but you’ll appreciate the pay raise Java certification should yield.

Lambda expressions are the major feature of Java 8, having an impact on most of the API, including the Streams and Collections API. We are now living the Java 11 days; new features have been added and new patterns have emerged. This highly technical Deep Dive session will visit all these patterns, the well-known ones and the new ones, in an interactive hybrid of lecture and laboratory. We present a technique and show how it helps solve a problem. We then present another problem, and give you some time to solve it yourself. Finally, we present a solution, and open for questions, comments, and discussion. Bring your laptop set up with JDK 11 and your favorite IDE, and be prepared to think! This session is part 1 of 2 parts. In part 1 we will cover lambdas, functional interfaces, default methods, higher-order functions, and comparators. José Paumard From JPEFI José is a developer, architect, application designer and instructor with 20 years experience in Java technologies and software craftsmanship. He is an assistant professor in Paris. He is a recognized expert, Java Champion and Java Rockstar. His recent work includes Java 8, lambda expressions, the Stream API and concurrent programming. A Brief History of Java and JDBC

For some internal training I wanted to highlight the importance of Java on the technology industry and the world, so I decided to do this brief history of Java and JDBC movie. My first Google search turned up a history timeline from Sun Microsystems (http://www.java.com/en/javahistory/) and so that was used as the basis for the movie. Java Junkies Enjoy! -Jesse
