12 Worst Product Recalls

09:00
Here are the top 12 most shocking product and toys recalls in the world from food that could give you e. coli to other product fails! Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 6. Kitetube Doesn’t it sound like a great idea to get put on a kite and have a high power boat drag you through the sky? Not really! The kite tube was made by Sportsstuff inc and it was basically a 10 foot wide circular inflatable watercraft that becomes airborne. People would try their best to stay on the kite tube 39 people were injured while operating this device, 29 of which needed hospitalization. Some of the injuries were quite severe, including: a broken neck, a punctured lung as well as facial injuries. Two of these people actually lost their lives. The suggestion statement on the product was featured next to crossbones and states:” never fly the kite higher than you are willing to fall.” Makes sense right? About 19,000 of these were recalled in 2006. 5. Samsung Galaxy Recalls Samsung recalled the Note 7 smartphones recently in 2016 after some of the batteries exploded or caught on fire! Samsung Note 7’s were being recalled from shelves in 10 countries including South Korea and the United States. People who bought the Note 7 could switch it out for something new but people were disappointed with the product failure. There were 35 confirmed instances of this new smartphone catching on fire and even exploding! It was estimated that 1 in every 14000 had faulty batteries but most likely, no one is going to want to take that risk unless it’s the new iphone. Most customer stated that the phone exploded while being charged. This goes to show, just the smallest errors in things like this can lead to dangerous products. This is mostly due to high powered lithium batteries, storing too much energy. Guys might want to consider not placing this phones in their pockets if they're planning on having kids someday. 4. Tommee Tippee Sippee Cups 3.1 Millions of these children's cups were recalled for a rather strange reason. The spill proof cups were becoming infested with mold spores in the removable, one-piece, white valve. Even when cleaned, moisture would remain in this area and some parents just wouldn’t clean this part. There were over 3,000 consumer reports of mold in the valves and 68 concerned parents reported illnesses from their children. The angry parents, posted photos on the Tommee Tippee Sippee Cups facebook page to show their disgust with the product. Consumers are advised to stop using cups with piece white valves. The company agreed to replace the cups, in an attempt to keep some of their customers. 3. Baby Milk Powder This doesn’t sound too appetizing. A huge scandal took place in China when an infant formula were containing a substance known as melamine was uncovered. This lead to an estimated 300,000 victims in total. Some children reportedly suffered from kidney stones and serious kidney damage with nearly 54,000 children being hospitalized. This lead to serious health concerns in china and a fear of exported goods from this country. Many countries refused to import goods from here, especially dairy products. The Chinese government prosecuted many people who were to blame executing two, placing 3 in prison for life and other serious punishments were administered. The substances placed in the milk were not well tested and over 2100 tons of powdered milk was destroyed and 9000 recalled. 2. Firestone and Goodyear Recall Possible one of the worst defaults by a tire company, firestone and Goodyear tires were exploding and shredding like no one had seen before. When ford motors found several models of 15-inch Firestone had severely high failure rate, this lead to the rightful closing of manufacturing plants. But the tires were still out there! Firestone ultimately demanded for a recall of over 2.8 million tires! This eventually led to 175 deaths and 700 injuries for firestone while much fewer were affected by goodyear tires. 1. Chinese Product Recall In 2007, China demanded a huge product recall and import bans were placed by the US, Canada, EU Australia and New Zealand when they began realizing certain products weren’t safe. Products shipped from China like pet food noticed that animals were falling ill and dying. It turns out it has the same chemical, melamine, that was placed in the baby milk powder. But this was just the tip of the iceberg. Marvel toys, recalled 175,000 dolls that apparently contained excessive amounts of lead paint. Lead is known to damage brain cells especially in children. In 2007, over 467 product recalls. An estimated 32 percent of all toys China exported contained lead. Toys like hotwheels even contained a deadly poison known as arsenic! The most likely reasoning for this is that heavy metals are much cheaper and using any other substance would likely push their costs up.

The Consumer Price Index and Your Experience of Price Change

03:33
This video explains how and why the price change reported by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) may vary from the prices Canadians see on the shelves. It tells the story of Joe and Izzy, and how they each perceive price change as compared with the CPI. For more information about Canada's Consumer Price Index: http://ow.ly/XkJ4E Transcript: The Consumer Price Index, CPI for short, is one of the principal measures of inflation in Canada. It tracks the price change of goods and services for all consumers across the country. Some have asked why the index doesn't appear to reflect their own consumer experiences. It may seem like the prices you see on grocery store shelves or at the pumps are not reflected in the CPI every month but, in fact, they are. To see why, let's look at two Canadian consumers who are closely related but very different Izzy, and her eldest son, Joanasie. Joe and his mom are close, but there's one issue that they just don't see eye to eye on: food. Joe always loved to eat meat, especially his mother's beef stroganoff. He loved it so much in fact, that Izzy grew tired of it and became a vegetarian when Joe left home. During Joe's last visit, Izzy thought she might curb his carnivorous tendencies by making him one of her favourite veggie dishes: spinach tofu curry. It didn't work. Despite being a habitual plate-cleaner, Joe didn't even eat the tofu. As he prodded the little white cubes with his fork, he dreamt of steaks, roasts, and hamburgers. Joe's choice of meat over tofu is one of the preferences that shape him as a consumer, and he is a very different consumer than his mom. Personal preference and taste as well as many other factors, such as household composition, lifestyle and mobility all have an influence on decisions that consumers make. Since the CPI is an average measure of price change, it takes into account the big picture of consumer spending across Canada. It includes both Izzy's tofu and Joe's beef, as well as a massive list of other items that some Canadians buy frequently and others simply have no use for. This big picture of consumer spending may not match with the experience of you or your household. This is because your experience of price change is limited to the relatively small list of things that you buy often. For example, for Joe's next visit, Izzy made another trip to the grocery store during which she unhappily noticed that her favorite tofu brand had increased in price by 50 cents. Remembering Joe's last visit, she made note of a sale on pot roasts before she left the store. She figured she could make her beef stroganoff for Joe since he didn't seem thrilled with her veggie dishes. While the measly 50-cent increase in tofu had thrown Izzy for a loop, she didn't even notice that the price of beef had increased by a hearty 20% in the past year. Most consumers, like Izzy, attach greater importance to price changes in goods and services that they buy frequently over more occasional purchases. However, the CPI measures price change in all goods and services. In doing so, we can draw an accurate picture of inflation and price change in the country. Changes in common items like milk or gasolineare included in the CPI of course, however, the index also includes items that are purchased less frequently, such as furniture, home electronics and clothing. Joe, for example, hates shopping for clothing, but he did buy a new pair of jeans for his next visit to his mom's place - a pair with very deep pockets. Visit the website for more information about Canada's Consumer Price Index.

http://www.dtsc.ca.gov/index.cfm http://www.dtsc.ca.gov/SCP/index.cfm California's Department of Toxic Substances Control talks about the criteria used when choosing the Draft Initial Priority Products for it's Safer Consumer Product Regulation that went into effect late last year. Script: [DTSC NEWS FEED OPEN] [SAFER CONSUMER PRODUCTS] [Music] NATs of SCP event [clapping] VO: Last year the Department of Toxic Substances Controls Safer Consumer Products Regulation went into effect. This year the Department is announcing its Draft Initial Priority Products list. SOT of Meredith Williams: Deputy Director,Safer Products and Workplaces Program: What these regulations allow us to do is ask the question: Are these chemicals necessary in the products that they're used in? VO: The Department of Toxic Substances Control believes fundamental questions should be asked about the combinations of chemicals used in California's products. SOT from Debbie Raphael: Director, Department of Toxic Substances Control: There are so many parties with an interest. Everything from mothers and shoppers who care about the products they buy and are bewildered when they read a complicated label...to the manufacturers who want to sell their products. VO: The Draft initial Priority Products list is the next phase of the regulation. DTSC believes this initial list identifies product chemical combinations that can potentially pose a substantial threat to human health and the environment. SOT of Meredith Williams: Deputy Director, Safer Products and Workplaces Program: If it's a product that's only used in a very special application or not widely distributed we're not nearly as concerned as a product that's in wide use. VO: Two key principles must be present in each priority product: There must be a possibility of exposure to the chemicals and there must be potential for significant or widespread adverse impacts. TEXT on Screen: Potential exposure(s) Potential for significant or widespread adverse impacts SOT of Meredith Williams: Deputy Director, Safer Products and Workplaces Program: Causing a health problem, an environmental problem, a safety problem. For instance, is it a carcinogen? It is a respiratory problem? Is it something that impacts some of our threatened and endangered species? We look at all of these things. We look at the market conditions to understand how the product is really being used. VO: DTSC believes removing harmful toxics from products is good for business and some of the country's largest companies agree. SOT of Meredith Williams: Deputy Director, Safer Products and Workplaces Program: Wal-Mart, last fall, announced that they were going to eliminate 10 hazardous chemicals from all the products they sell in their stores. They've recognized that this is a problem. Consumers are asking more and more frequently to find out what's in the products that they use...what are the chemicals that they're being exposed to? And the market is responding to that. VO: The announcement of the initial Priority Products list represents a proactive and science based shift in the way Californians and the environment are protected from potential toxic harm. SOT of Meredith Williams: Deputy Director, Safer Products and Workplaces Program: This is not a ban, this is the beginning of a process to really make sure that we've selected the right products and that we want to go ahead with what we call rulemaking to begin to regulate those products. CHINA: FAST GROWING CONSUMER MARKET

02:05
English/Nat China is one of the fastest growing consumer markets in the world. Manufacturers from all over the world are therefore more than interested to find out what China's increasingly affluent consumers are going to be buying? In response, the Gallup survey organisation on Wednesday released the first major poll of consumer attitudes in China. And it gives some interesting insights. Mainland China, it's the hottest, and potentially the biggest consumer market in the world. As market reforms begin to take over, business analysts say the Chinese consumer may be worth billions. But questions have always remained about the Chinese consumer. What do they want? What do these people consider important when making buying decisions? What do they value? The Gallup survey organisation released a poll Wednesday that sets about answering some of those questions. Unlike other polls, the Gallup survey covered a wide-cross section of Chinese in both urban and rural areas. SOUNDBITE: "We really felt we needed to improve our intelligence of the Chinese consumers and launch the first truly nationwide study of Chinese consumers, covered all the entire population of China, 34-hundred interviews throughout all of China, even had consumers go out or interviewers go out to the Gobi Desert by camel because those people's opinions count as well." SUPER CAPTION: Chris Stewart, Gallup spokesman In the categories of product recognition, Japanese products topped the list. Number one on the survey was electronics giant Hitachi. Japanese dominance was no surprise, considering their long history of marketing in China. Other products on the list included Toshiba, another Japanese electronics company. The results clearly show a growing interest by Chinese consumers in electronics and consumer products. Japanese vehicles were also highly recognised by the Chinese consumer. Honda, as well as Suzuki, were mentioned most frequently on the survey. American companies that have marketed heavily in China, like airplane manufacturer Boeing, also make the list of 100 companies deemed most recognisable to the Chinese consumer. Coca-Cola has been marketing in China for over a decade. No surprise then that the soft-drink manufacturer was known second only to Hitachi to the Chinese. For European companies, Volkswagen was a name many Chinese could recognise. German car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz was also high on the list. Experts on Chinese consumer attitudes say Western companies need to catch up with Japan to get a bigger share of this growing market. SOUNDBITE: "The American companies are far behind the Japanese company, so what I would like to say is just that catch up with Japanese companies. This is my advice." SUPER CAPTION: He Hong Ze - Journalist People's Daily The attitudes of the Chinese consumer were also polled, and the results were interesting. They reflect the growing buying power of the average Chinese. The Chinese are beginning to acquire more and more disposable wealth, and that translates into spending. While the Chinese market economy is still developing, experts say the average consumer in the country is ready to buy. SOUNDBITE: "These days everybody want to work hard and get rich and want they want to buy things. Manufacturers, Importers and Retailers Await Transformative California Consumer Product Regulations

03:57
http://www.allenmatkins.com The California Department of Toxic Substances Control ("DTSC") recently issued its long awaited draft Safer Consumer Products regulations. The proposed regulations would prohibit exposure to certain chemicals, making it far more stringent than Propositions 65 which only requires a warning label. The proposed regulations require DTSC to publish a list of "chemicals of concern." DTSC will then evaluate products containing these chemicals and produce a list of products that need to be evaluated. If you're a maker or importer of one of these products, you will need to notify DTSC and later provide a preliminary assessment. Eileen Nottoli discusses the importance of having a game plan for your product if it contains "chemicals of concern." She encourages companies selling consumer products in California to read the proposed regulations, understand them and make comments. There is a public hearing on September 10 and written comments will be accepted until October 11 at 5 pm.

Product Packaging Primer - Wrapping Paper Series (whiteboard video)

00:50
Your product teams surely have already finalized their lineup of holiday winners, the new gizmos and must-have widgets that you hope end up on everyone’s wish lists. Unless the product gets noticed by consumers, however, those product design efforts will go to waste. On the crowded holiday shelves and search result pages, even the greatest new product needs distinctive packaging. Your product packaging is another—and an increasingly important—opportunity to attract consumer attention. Well-executed product packaging can support and strengthen your brand identity, differentiate your product on the shelf, and convey important, and often required, information to consumers. But with fleeting consumer attention spans and stiff competition for that attention, your product packaging has only a short time to grab and maintain consumers’ interest. Of course, you need your packaging to capture consumer attention while avoiding scrutiny by the state and federal regulators, plaintiffs’ attorneys and your competitors. To help you navigate this critical area, Perkins Coie has compiled a checklist of common legal issues and best practices associated with product packaging. So check the list twice, at least, and help ensure that your new gizmos and widgets fly off the shelves without unwanted regulator, competitor or consumer challenges. Read the update at this link: http://www.perkinscoie.com/packagingprimer Transcription for the hearing impaired below: Alright, packaging... Say you’ve got a new gizmo, ready to take the holidays by storm. Just needs some packaging. Your Brand Manager wants your mark prominently featured, of course. And your Marketing folks want a description of what makes it so special. Meanwhile Joe in Logistics reminds you that it needs to identify the source to clear customs. And Sally, your aggressive VP of Sales, wants to explain why your gizmo is better than their gizmo. Wouldn’t it be great if there was one easy place to explain the legal issues around all these great packaging ideas? Well there is. The Perkins Coie Products Packaging Primer available here. Happy holidays from your friends at Perkins Coie. Let’s add some mistletoe, to keep Joe and Sally happy!

Government to reveal import prices of consumer goods, improve direct purchasing from overseas

02:13
Korean consumers are turning more and more to the internet to purchase products from abroad, and understandably so... as they can get much better deals. To reverse the trend and level the playing field for consumers,... the government is stepping in. Song Ji-sun reports. Import prices of these products are around 10 dollars... but the very same product on the shelf of a department store carries a price tag four times higher. That's the case with many imported products after distribution margins and marketing prices are taken into account. To provide consumers with sufficient information and to stabilize prices... the government has added the import prices of ten industrial products like wine, strollers and lipstick to its publicly available list. The import price list previously included 60 food products. The customs office said the cheaper the import price of an item,... the more expensive its retail price became as a monopoly among domestic distributors meant no price competitiveness. This gap between the import and retail prices has led more and more Korean consumers to directly purchase products from overseas over the years, mostly online. Direct overseas shopping tripled from 2010 to a billion U.S. dollars last year. The beefed-up import price list is only one change the government is making to support consumers. At an economic ministerial meeting on Wednesday, finance minister Hyun Oh-seok announced that the customs clearance process would be sped up to allow consumers to claim their purchased items more quickly. They will also be able to return their products purchased overseas with less fuss -- and get tax refunds more easily thanks to simplified procedures. The government will also encourage free market competition among importers by facilitating parallel imports -- all part of its goal to lower the retail prices of imported consumer goods by up to 20 percent over the next three years. What is Direct-To-Consumer?

00:54
In retail, a direct-to-consumer business works directly with a manufacturer to make their product — sometimes they even make the product themselves! Then, they sell it directly to their end customer. In ecommerce, direct-to-consumer, or DTC, brands are vertically integrated meaning they can control their customers’ experience from beginning to end — everything from the product photography to the packaging. This often reduces cost and maximizes profits. That is direct-to-consumer. 🏅 Become a supply chain pro and get definitions to the words that every entrepreneur and ops team member should know: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrqM6Vg4p-UQImb6yDKB9L10BImZf8sXO

Government to reveal import prices of consumer goods, improve direct purchasing from overseas

02:11
Korean consumers are turning more and more to the internet to purchase products from abroad, and understandably so... as they can get much better deals. To reverse the trend and level the playing field for consumers,... the government is stepping in. Song Ji-sun reports. Import prices of these products are around 10 dollars... but the very same product on the shelf of a department store carries a price tag four times higher. That's the case with many imported products... after distribution margins and marketing prices are taken into account. To provide consumers with sufficient information and to stabilize import prices... the government has added the import prices of ten industrial products -- like wine, strollers and lipstick-- to its publicly available list. The import price list previously included 60 food products. The customs office said the cheaper the import price of an item,... the more expensive its retail price became... as a monopoly among domestic distributors meant no price competitiveness. This gap between the import and retail prices has led more and more Korean consumers to directly purchase products from overseas over the years, mostly online. Direct overseas shopping tripled from 2010... to a billion U.S. dollars last year. The beefed-up import price list is only one change the government is making to support consumers. At an economic ministerial meeting on Wednesday,... finance minister Hyun Oh-seok announced that the customs clearance process would be sped up to allow consumers to claim their purchased items more quickly. They will also be able to return their products purchased overseas with less fuss -- and get tax refunds more easily thanks to simplified procedures. The government will also encourage free market competition among importers... by facilitating parallel imports,... all part of its goal to lower the retail prices of imported consumer goods by up to 20 percent over the next three years.
