First impressions are important, and in PR you need to dress the part. Wear something fashionable, on-trend, chic and not too corporate, unless you're applying for a corporate PR position. But if you're applying for anything in entertainment, fashion and brands, it's important again to dress on-trend. The next thing is being prepared. Come to the interview with writing samples, a clip book of press that you've pitched and placed. Now, I know if this is an entry level position, you may not have these things yet. But the fact that you know about them and that they exist and that you know that that's what you're going to be doing once you gain that job in PR, be prepared. So, have a sample of the way that you write. Give an example of what a prospective client would be for you and the sections and the placements you would like to get for them. If you came in to an interview with me, and let's say you didn't have any experience but you knew that field of PR, and you said, "If this was my client, this would be the pitch that I would pitch for them, and this is the sections in the magazine that I would get them in," and give me an example in that interview I'd be sold. And no one has done it to me yet. Like I said, your Rolodex is everything. So, you're going to be asked in an interview, "Who are your contacts? Who are your media relationships? What celebrity publicists or celebrity managers do you have relationships with?" Come in with three to five strong contacts that you can say, "These people will help me in the position at your company," because again, it's about who you know. Also, be prepared to have a list of magazines, blogs, and newspapers that you read on a daily basis. Being that our job is to get our clients in the news, you need to know the news. So during the interview, I want you to tell your future employer, blogs, magazines and newspapers that you read on a daily basis and that you're up to date on what's current.

You need to be organized, but outgoing, not afraid to go up to that person in the party and introduce yourself. You need to not be afraid to talk about your client, and you're always pitching. A publicist, you're never off. So, the skills you need are just someone who is innovative, outgoing, and loves pop culture. Like I've said before, you need to have your finger on the pulse of everything sexy, hot and what is now, what is going on now. So I know you're going to be a good publicist if you know every magazine out there, the sections in the magazine. You know what's going on right now in the news. To sum it up, to be a good publicist is you're outgoing, you're popular, you're social, you have a head for business and you have your finger on the pulse of everything hot, hip, and news-worthy.

Storytelling Makes Public Relations Moments Last

A local news station was on site at an Orlando Lowe’s as people rushed to claim essential supplies. There, luck was on the side of Ramon Santiago, who was able to snag one of the cherished few generators left in the store. As he made his way to check out, Mr. Santiago saw a woman crying. The woman, Pam Brekke, had been hoping to purchase a generator for her father, in order to power his oxygen. She was next in line, but it was too late. Lowe’s was out of generators and Pam was out of options. Seeing her tears, Ramon insisted she take the one he’d been about to purchase. Pam was overwhelmed with gratitude. Later that afternoon, when another generator became available, a Lowe’s store manager thought of Santiago’s kindness and, in the ultimate fairy-tale ending, provided Santiago with a generator free of charge. The picture of Brekke and Santiago embracing in the middle of Lowe’s quickly gained steam online, illustrating the power of kindness in the middle of disaster and for a few moments, was a bright spot in an otherwise stormy week. Now that is an awesome story… a perfect PR moment. A true moment of heroism, humanism, good people doing good things for good people. But there’s a problem with that story… In the world of social media and the constant addiction to content (it is king afterall), that story was told, lived its typical PR cycle, and like yesterday’s newspaper is out with the trash and otherwise forgotten. For a society that’s so obsessed with sustainability and eager to reuse – why is it that we toss important stories the second the limelight fades? Moments like these are happening every day inside companies big and small; stories of businesses, employing humans, who go out of their way to serve other humans. Yeah, maybe the stakes aren’t as high as a hurricane and maybe the news crew isn’t there to catch it on film… But overlooking these stories means missing HUGE opportunities, both internally and external to communicate on a very intimate level and in a memorable way, the essence of who you are. Here are three quick tips for seizing these powerful story opportunities. First, develop a system for cultivating these frontline stories. Start weekly meetings with front line stories. Create an email address where supervisors and/or team members can send stories in. Your goal is to make it convenient for employees to share stories quickly and efficiently. Second, tell these stories on the inside as well as to the outside. It’s tempting to take all your stories and push them out to the public. However, telling them internally has its advantages too. Keeping team members engaged, hiring great talent – both of these modern business challenges can be addressed with sharing stories OF your team WITH your team. Last. Tell these stories without any hope of return. Your first inclination might be to use a human-interest story to sell products or boost your company’s image. Though a story certainly has the ability to do that, it should not be your first objective. Tell these stories with the primary goal of authentically sharing and illustrating what matters to the company and to connect on a human level with customers, employees, and other stakeholders. So stop. Right now. Reach out to a colleague, an employee, a team member… and ask them about a time when they saw someone within your company going above the call of duty for a customer.

Propaganda, Public Relations, Marketing, and Advertising: Ivy Lee and Edward Bernays Propaganda has been around basically since the dawn of man in one form or another. But when it comes to modern propaganda, there are a few names that stand out. This documentary focuses on the origins of modern propaganda, and the practical applications. Ivy Ledbetter Lee was an American publicity expert and a founder of modern public relations. (The term Public Relations is to be found for the first time in the preface of the 1897 Yearbook of Railway Literature). He is best known for his public relations work with the Rockefeller family. His first major client was the Pennsylvania Railroad, followed by numerous major railroads such as the New York Central, the Baltimore and Ohio, and the Harriman lines such as the Union Pacific. He established the Association of Railroad Executives, which included providing public relations services to the industry. Lee advised major industrial corporations, including steel, automobile, tobacco, meatpacking, and rubber, as well as public utilities, banks, and even foreign governments. Lee pioneered the use of internal magazines to maintain employee morale, as well as management newsletters, stockholder reports, and news releases to the media. He did a great deal of pro bono work, and during World War I, he became the publicity director for the American Red Cross. Edward Louis James Bernays was an Austrian-American pioneer in the field of public relations and propaganda, referred to in his obituary as "the father of public relations." He combined the ideas of Gustave Le Bon and Wilfred Trotter on crowd psychology with the psychoanalytical ideas of his uncle, Sigmund Freud. He felt this manipulation was necessary in society, which he regarded as irrational and dangerous as a result of the "herd instinct" that Trotter had described. Adam Curtis's award-winning 2002 documentary for the BBC, The Century of the Self, pinpoints Bernays as the originator of modern public relations, and Bernays was named one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century by Life magazine. Create an exclusive party, an invite-only full of celebrities and cool DJs and performances, all around something that's launching. Because our world is so celebrity-driven. So if you take something new that's launching and pair it up with a celebrity, it's a win/win. Because you're going to get media coverage, you're going to get that celebrity stamp of approval and you're going to get people identifying the brand with that popular celebrity and it creates for a successful launch.

If it's a product launch, that may not be enough. You need to have something that is going to make it press-worthy. Be it a really cool DJ (but a celebrity DJ), or be it a celebrity host, or be it a really cool performance. There's got to be something press-worthy to even get the press engaged to even want to cover it. Once you get that press-worthy element, it's time to notify the press. The best way to notify the press is by sending out a media alert. Basically, the media alert is a who, what, when, where, why, and why they need to cover it. There's two ways of getting press to cover your event. Press to cover your red carpet, and they stay out on the red carpet. Then there's the press that you want to come inside, observe the party, and write about the party, the event. Once you've gotten that press-worthy element, which is like your headliner or your host or your cool DJ that goes along with whatever product you're launching or event you're doing or magazine or whatever it happens to be, then you also want to supplement the crowd with other celebrities. You want to get other celebrity guests in the room. You can use this press-worthy event that you've already crafted and send out an invite to get other notables in the room. Then, when you want to reach out to your red carpet to fill that with media and press, you send them a media alert that says who's going to be there, who's going to be walking the carpet, who they're going to get to talk to, who they're going to get to photograph. Another way to get press for an event is to know the writers that write about events, the party pages, the gossip reporters. Those are the people that you let inside and let them observe and write about the event.

Because I’m listed on a few PR directories/platforms I receive 100+ pitches a day and all but 5 email pitches total have been bad..actually horrible!! A press kit is something that every client gets when they engage in a PR campaign with a PR agency. It's a very important package of information that basically sells the product or sells the person, or sells the restaurant, lounge, event. So, depending on the client is going to depend what exactly goes into a press kit. But in general, it usually includes a bio, photos, a fact sheet, and then a sampling of the best press you've received throughout your PR campaign or throughout your career. A press kit is used to sell the product, to sell the person, to sell the project, to sell the event. For example, a press kit on an event would include possibly the event invites, a list of photos of everybody who attended the event, and then all of the press placed post-event and pre-event. A press kit for a person would include their bio, would include their head shot, and then would include all the top press hits they received. A press kit for a restaurant would include the chef bio, the owner bio, a fact sheet on the restaurant, menus, and then again all the press hits of saying why that restaurant is so great.
