Economic Systems and Macroeconomics: Crash Course Economics #3

10:18
In which Jacob Clifford and Adriene Hill teach you about Economic Systems and Macroeconomics. So, economics is basically about choices. We'll look at some of the broadest economic choices when we talk about the difference between planned economies and market economies. We'll get into communism, socialism, command economies, and capitalism. We'll look at how countries choose the kind of system they're going to use (spoiler alert: many end up with mixed economies). We'll also look into how individuals make economic choices. Crash Course is now on Patreon! The Economics of Tax Reform: Lessons from the Donut Shop

02:17
What can a donut shop teach us about tax reform? Maybe quite a bit. Would the federal government have all of the money it needed if Congress just kept raising taxes? Possibly, but after a while, higher tax rates would actually bring in less money for the government. The same is true of a business. If you were making a little bit of money selling donuts at $1 a piece, would you make 300 times as much money by changing your price to $300 per donut? Probably not. When it comes to evaluating tax changes, the most common way is to assume that no matter how different the tax code is in the future, the economy will continue to behave as if nothing had happened -- Americans will keep working and investing in the exact same way. Using this "static," or unchanging, view of the economy, however, gives us a distorted idea of what the future is going to look like. The Tax Foundation uses a sophisticated economic model to measure the dynamic effects of tax policy changes. We believe that this approach gives lawmakers a more realistic picture of the effects of tax changes on the economy and federal finances. Video script: Imagine that you own a sweet donut shop. And say you sell 100 donuts every day at $1 each. You'd make $100 a day, right? Now say you raised the price of your donuts to $5 each. Would you make $500 a day? Maybe. But maybe people wouldn't buy as many donuts at five dollars each. So what if you lowered the price of the donuts to fifty cents each? Yes, you'd make less money per donut, but you'd probably have a lot more customers. Seems like a simple part of economics, right? Well, simple or not, it's not how the government views taxes. Whenever Congress is trying to calculate how much money they'll get from taxes, they use what some people call, 'Static Scoring.' That means that according to Congress' estimates, every tax cut means lost revenue. And every tax hike means more money for the government. Which isn't always true. Just like every increase in the price of donuts doesn't mean more money for the donut shop. After all, who's going to buy a $300 donut? All of this matters because, in a weird way Congress' over-simplified model is holding us back. Because if you don't estimate the economic effect of taxes, you can't make good policies. Well, there IS a better model. But Congress isn't using it. A Dynamic scoring model focuses more on economic growth. A Dynamic model calculates the broader effects of tax policy on the things that produce economic growth -- such as how tax policy affects the cost of labor and the cost of capital investment. Higher taxes on labor means fewer jobs at lower wages. Lower taxes on labor mean more of those jobs at higher wages. Higher taxes on capital such as buildings and ovens mean less investment in those things And lower taxes mean more. So what? Well, more capital and more labor mean more growth and better living standards for American families. And after all, isn't the point of tax reform to grow our economy so Americans can have more opportunities? Critics of dynamic scoring resist it because economists don't always agree on the details. But isn't trying dynamic scoring better than using a model we know is wrong? After all, this isn't a donut shop, we're talking about. It's our country.

If you do not understand the bath salt verse please view the following video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKbTbRqXVFg Lyrics: Chorus 1 I really like Starbucks Even though its five dollars a cup of coffee I-I-I get it Some say it's too expensive But its value is subjective Walk into Starbucks I'm like what up I need a double shot Loiterer in the back says, this dudes about to spend a lot Ice in the cup the espressos Frothy Take a sip like "Yo, that's some real good coffee!" Now I know I could get it cheap if I buy my own coffee beans Value's what you think; it's not a black and white movie scene where cost of goods is linked to some predetermined utility Probably should've invested it, by now I would surely be Rich!!! But yo! I lack common sense! Value is subjective see Let's look of this objectively The cost of productivity Doesn't determine our utility It's our needs wants and abilities that we use as our guide Along with the diamond and water paradox that deals with supply You see diamonds are rare so their prices are high There's plenty of water to spare if your mouth gets dry But if this resource gets scarce and people need to survive They'll be knocking each other over when their trying to buy But what's the value of a good have nobody's wanting to buy? Absolutely none, regardless of the production time This type good is not really a good at all Like a little man shopping in a big and tall. Or only having sandpaper in a bathroom stall Girl walking through the shoe store like "I'm a buy them all!!!" Chorus 2 I really like to shop Got over a hundred pairs of shoes in my closet I-I- I get it There values not intrinsic Their value is subjective I really like bath salts Even though at times it makes me chew on faces I-I-I get Some say I'm schizophrenic But its value is subjective Some people like to shop while others prefer drugs and they'll do just about anything just to catch a buzz man Their trippin, their trippin making decisions at the margin Abusing any substance even if it will harm them And it's so sad, how they could make such bad decisions its absurd how they could care less who they hurt I'm at the Austrian School you can find me reading Hayek Telling me that value isn't subjective son don't even try it The markets regarded for putting prices on target Matching people's needs with products at prices they should be bought at sucka You set the money right and they'd a bought that product from ya You charge to much and they'll stop buying products from ya LARPers are like "yo! That wizard costume is hella tight" I'm like yep dropped a hundred dollars on it last night There won't be any more wishin I'm a conquer all of my missions $100 for a costume some may consider this senseless I call that meeting a person's preference. You call me back I'll give you a Menger reference Its economics yo! And assuming that value remains constant over time is a hella don't We gave econ life, listen through my stethoscope Expanding economic knowledge is our only hope it's our only hope Chorus 3 I really like to LARP That's Live Action Role Playing to all you suckers I-I-I did it Spent a hundred to be a wizard The value is subjective We value different things Spend our money in different ways Trying to reach our utility Dude stop chewing on my face!! We value different things Spend our money in different ways Trying to reach our utility Man I'm about to catch a case I really like my guns Spent $500 on some ammunition I-I just-don't get it The need for prohibition The value is subjective

Davos 2019: Historian Rutger Bregman berates billionaires at World Economic Forum over tax avoidance

37:16
A discussion panel at the Davos World Economic Forum has become a sensation after a Dutch historian took billionaires to task for not paying taxes. Rutger Bregman, author of the book Utopia for Realists, bemoans the failure of attendees at the recent gathering in Switzerland to address the key issue in the battle for greater equality: the failure of rich people to pay their fair share of taxes. Noting that 1,500 people had travelled to Davos by private jet to hear David Attenborough talk about climate change, he said he was bewildered that no one was talking about raising taxes on the rich. “I hear people talking the language of participation, justice, equality and transparency but almost no one raises the real issue of tax avoidance, right? And of the rich just not paying their fair share,” Bregman tells the Time magazine panel on inequality. “It feels like I’m at a firefighters conference and no one’s allowed to speak about water.” Industry had to “stop talking about philanthropy and start talking about taxes”, he said, and cited the high tax regime of 1950s America as an example to disprove arguments by businesspeople at Davos such as Michael Dell that economies with high personal taxation could not succeed. “That’s it,” he says. “Taxes, taxes, taxes. All the rest is bullshit in my opinion.” A member of the audience, former Yahoo chief financial officer Ken Goldman, challenged his comments and said it was a “one-sided panel”. He argued the fiscal settings across the global economy had been successful and had created record employment. But another panel member, Winnie Byanyima, an Oxfam executive director, took up the fight and said high employment was not a good thing in itself because many people found themselves in exploitative work. She cited the example of poultry workers in the US who had to wear nappies (diapers) because they were not allowed toilet breaks. “That’s not a dignified job,” she said. “those are the jobs we’ve been told about, that globalisation is bringing jobs. The quality of the jobs matter. In many countries workers no longer have a voice. Addressing Goldman, she said: “You’re counting the wrong things. You’re not counting dignity of people. You’re counting exploited people.” Billions of dollars were leaked by tax avoidance every year which should instead be going to alleviate poverty in the developing world, she added. #Davos #WorldEconomicForum #RutgerBregman

Dental Economics Magazine Announces its 2013 Design Competition Winner

03:36
April, 2014, Dental Economics Magazine Announces its 2013 Design Competition Winner Parrish Dentistry, Llano, Texas Drs. Jennifer and Charles (Chip) Parrish Design by Practice Design Group, Buda,Texas http://practicedesigngrouppdg.blogspot.com/p/home-page.html View Article from April 2014 issue of Dental Economics Magazine http://practicedesigngrouppdg.blogspot.com/2014/04/parrish-dentistry-win-dental-economics.html The design concept behind Parrish Dentistry was to build a first-class health-care facility with a balance of the latest technology and the interior design comforts of a home. The exterior of the building exemplifies this with a blend of contemporary lines, multiple materials (wood, metal, stucco, stone), and Texas Tuscany styling. Upon entering the building, there is a spacious patient area with 20-foot-high ceilings, abundant windows, natural light, and multiple living-room-quality seating areas. The lounge area incorporates a partitioned off children's section, and a water bar with custom Parrish Dentistry labeled bottled water. Branding is everything! The patient experience includes warmly lit hallways, custom patient entertainment systems above each dental chair, and comfortable seating for family members. Every treatment room is equipped with both staff and patient monitors for practice management and patient education, respectively. Intraoral and extraoral pictures, X-rays, and all charting are done digitally in the operatories. Patients get to see what their dentist sees. It doesn't take years of school to diagnose a failing, cracked alloy on a 27-inch monitor! Show patients and they will want it fixed. The old 1,400-square-foot Parrish Family and Cosmetic Dentistry office had very little breathing room. It had no staff lounge, no common area, no lockers, and no team bathroom. Drs. Parrish wanted their new facility to reflect their commitment to their outstanding team members. After polling their team, Drs. Parrish designed a private staff bathroom, private staff entrance, individual lockers, a large team lounge with a 60-inch LED TV, and even installed an outdoor kitchen so they can cook out for the monthly team meetings. To round out the office, Practice Design Group added a consult room, a digital imaging room large enough to accommodate future technology needs, a supply closet, a mop closet, a tech closet, and a good-sized laboratory. Drs. Parrish share a spa-inspired private office with their own exit and private bathroom.
