Amazing military helicopter landing on ship deck in rough seas
It’s an amazing , of a military helicopter landing on the deck of a rather small ship in rough seas and see the extent to which the deck of the ship is just rolling with the waves. It’s amazing they can land in these conditions. Operating helicopters onboard ships is extremely complex, due in part to the difficulty of landing a helicopter on a moving platform, but also due to numerous practical engineering ====================================================== -------Other videos : Crazy! Understanding Marine Buoyage - "quieter volume" - simple and easy www.coastalsafety.com
Buoyage is the general term that covers markers for indicating channel markers, safe water, danger areas and special purpose areas This is a quieter volume version - for the full volume version go here or click the link in the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAQPJdB-3ko Region A covers Europe and most of the of the world (red to port side). Region B covers the America, Japan, the Philippines and South Korea (Green to port side). Flash - less light & more darkness Long flash - longer flash but still less light & more darkness Isophase - equal time of light and darkness Occulting - more light & less darkness Navigation buoys fall into 6 types: lateral - marking channels cardinal - indicating safe direction of navigation isolated danger - small areas of danger safe water - safe navigation in all directions form the buoy wrecks - submerged and partially submerged ships wrecks and danger special - other areas where various activities are / are not allowed Nautical chart symbols Aids to Navigation that have lights are marked on the chart with a small teardrop shape that will be magenta in colour (easy to read under a RED night vision light). The teardrop can point in various directions to best display on the chart and the actual direction drawn on the chart is of no significance. The exact location of the buoy or mark is the small circle or dot at the base symbol on the chart. Lateral Marks are used generally to mark the sides of well-defined, navigable channels. They are positioned in accordance with the "Conventional Direction of Buoyage" as discussed above. They indicate the Port and Starboard hand sides of the route to be followed. Generally, the bigger the buoy the bigger the vessels the channel is designed for / used by and so the deeper the water. It may well be possible to navigate outside of the channel on a smaller boat depending on the height of tide and the nature of the sea bed. Port and Starboard lateral marks tend to be can shaped on the port side and conical shaped on the starboard side - this makes them easier to identify in low light or reduced visibility conditions. Cardinal buoys and marks warn of danger and remain constant throughout the system of two IALA regions and are the same for areas IALA "A" and IALA "B" regions. There may be only one buoy or more depending on the danger and the shape of the coast. For example, close to the shore they may be only one buoy as it may not be possible to go between the wreck and the shore. The buoys have two black cones in different configurations which are know as the "top mark" cones - these point to the black areas on the body of the buoy - the rest of the buoy is yellow. Your direction of approach doesn't matter – which makes them different from lateral buoys - the buoys indicate where you should go. The body of a cardinal buoy is always marked with a combination of black and yellow bands. It is always surmounted with a topmark consisting of 2 black triangles arranged in 1 of 4 combinations. Cardinal Marks are used in conjunction with the compass to indicate the direction from the mark in which the deepest navigable water lies, to draw attention to a bend, junction or fork in a channel, or to mark the end of a shoal. The buoys indicate where the safe water is, that is, mariners will be safe if they pass North of a North mark South of a South mark East of an East mark West of a West mark. Isolated Danger Marks are used to mark small, isolated dangers with navigable water around the buoy They are used to mark an isolated hazard in waters which otherwise are navigable. They are normally moored directly on or above the danger such as a large rock, shoal or sunken ship. The pattern of bands is BLACK over RED over BLACK. The topmark is 2 BLACK balls. If lit, the light will show 2 WHITE flashes (Fl 2). They can mark: a small area of rocks a pinnacle rock small sand bank old collapsed buildings in the sea pipes that are a danger to surface navigation Safe Water Marks may be used at the seaward end of the start of a channel to a port, mid-channel, as a centreline markers or at the point where land is reached. These buoys (as the name suggests) indicate the presence of safe, navigable water all around the buoy. They may also indicate the best point of passage under a fixed bridge. These buoys are coloured Red and White in vertical stripes. It usually has a white light which flashes Isophase or Occulting or Morse code ‘A’ Emergency Wreck Buoys provide a clear and unambiguous means of marking new wrecks. www.coastalsafety.com

Marine tests Improve Survivability
Survivability increasing measures can take on many forms. Structural elements can be modified to reduce the transmission of loads to sensitive areas. For the same reason equipment shock mounts may be implemented. Important spaces can be protected by blast resistant doors and bulkheads. Shipyard is developing low weight, affordable fragment protection for bulkheads. A smart system lay-out will help to achieve a graceful degradation. The expected damage to the ship’s structure can inspire design changes that improve the residual strength. Fire safety engineering will result in safer ships and crews. The complexities of ship pressure hulls or (damaged) surface ships exposed to extreme sea conditions show that even steel naval structures still pose a serious challenge to the designer. Composite ship structures exhibit improved weight, cost and ‘stealth‘ properties, but the initiation and progression of failure, especially in joints, is very complex. Shipyard has developed unique and validated failure prediction tools for both steel and composite structures during the last 15 years.

Arctic Impacts On Weather And Food, Plus How Do We Mitigate The Effects?
The Arctic may be free of ice for the first time in 10,000 years. Wadhams shows how sea ice is the 'canary in the mine' of planetary climate change. He describes how it forms and the vital role it plays in reflecting solar heat back into space and providing an 'air conditioning' system for the planet. Prof. Peter Wadhams is the UK’s most experienced sea ice scientist, with 48 years of research on sea ice and ocean processes in the Arctic and the Antarctic. This has focused on expeditions and measurements in the field, which has involved more than 50 expeditions to both polar regions, working from ice camps, icebreakers, aircraft, and, uniquely, Royal Navy submarines (6 submerged voyages to the North Pole ). His research group in Cambridge has been the only UK group with the capacity to carry out fieldwork on sea ice. He is Emeritus Professor of Ocean Physics and is the author of numerous publications on dynamics and thermodynamics of sea ice, sea ice thickness, waves in ice, icebergs, ocean convection and kindred topics. The current main topics of research in the group are sea ice properties, dynamics, and distributions in thickness and concentration. He is also a pioneer in the use of AUVs (autonomous underwater vehicles) under sea ice, using multibeam sonar to map bottom features, work which he has also been done from UK nuclear submarines. He began his research career at the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge University, where he rose to become Director. He moved to DAMTP in 2001. He has also held visiting professorships in Tokyo (National Institute of Polar Research), Monterey (US Naval Postgraduate School), Seattle (University of Washington) and La Jolla (Green Scholar at Scripps Institution of Oceanography). He was the coordinator of several European Union Arctic flagship projects (ESOP, GreenICE, CONVECTION, and others) and is currently on the Steering Committee of the EU ICE-ARC project as well as a major US Office of Naval Research initiative in the Arctic. He served eight years on the Scientific Committee of the European Environment Agency and had served on panels of the National Academy of Sciences (USA). In 1990 he received the Italgas Prize for Environmental Sciences, and he has also been awarded the Polar Medal (UK) (1987) and the W.S. Bruce Prize of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. As well as being Professor at Cambridge he is an Associate Professor at the Laboratoire d’Océanographie de Villefranche, run by Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, and is a Professor at the Università Politecnica Delle Marche, Ancona. He is a Member of the Finnish Academy and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. His most recent book, “A Farewell to Ice”, documents the ways in which the retreat of sea ice in the Arctic generates feedbacks which impact the entire global climate system, accelerating the rate of warming, the rate of sea level rise, the emission of methane from the offshore, and the occurrence of weather extremes affecting food production. He contends that catastrophic consequences cannot be avoided without making an all-out effort to develop ways of directly capturing carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Found a New Spot
The marine weather forecast predicted stronger winds and larger waves and for once, they were right on the money. We went 30 miles out just hoping the wind and waves would come LATER in the morning but they came early so we only fished maybe 30 minutes at 15 Off the Mound. I caught one keeper Trigger and we both caught several small Black Sea Bass and then headed in till we found calmer waters. But the spot we found was very productive.

November 8, 2018 New England Fishing Report with Toby Lapinski
Be sure to follow the weekly fishing reports across New England at http://www.thefisherman.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=directory.category&PDIR=24. The past week saw much of the same fishing across Southern New England as the previous few weeks with lots of small stripers in the surf and mixed to good results for boats when they can get out for bottom fish like black sea bass, cod and blackfish. But first up, as noted at http://www.thefisherman.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=feature.display&feature_ID=2202&ParentCat=19, the ASMFC began a string of public hearings this week in regards to black sea bass, scup and fluke management. I attended the first hearing, which took place in CT on Monday, and here in New England we follow with RI on November 7 and Massachusetts on November 28. The other member states of the ASMFC will have their meetings throughout the month, so check out the full story at http://www.thefisherman.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=feature.display&feature_ID=2201&ParentCat=19. The topics being addressed cover Draft Addendum 31 and 32 which, in short, relate to conservation equivalency measure for black sea bass, rollover regulations from January through May, the ability to possess black sea bass, scup and fluke in the Block Island Transit zone, and the ability of states to manage annual regulations between themselves with somewhat less involvement from the ASMFC. In my opinion, most of the items are kind of non-issues, especially the transit zone issue as there is rarely a time when these species are open in state waters but not federal, but the issue of allowing states a bit more control in the process of setting annual regulations could streamline the process. In any event, if you are unable to attend a meeting in person, the public comment period runs through November 29 and you can submit your comments via snail mail or email, and again details are at TheFisherman.com. Speaking of bottom fish, Capt. Greg of the Black Hawk was at the ASMFC meeting on Monday night, and we spent some time talking about the fishing going on right now. He has been splitting his trips between Block Island when the weather allows for it, and local waters when things get churned up or the wind is blowing. Locally the blackfishing has been pretty good, but those trips over to Block have been producing an array of crowd-pleasing favorites including black sea bass, porgies, cod, winter flounder and pollock at times. Call the boat today at (860) 448-3662 to reserve your spot and get in on the action! Moving on to blackfish, another mega-tog was landed over the weekend, this time by Mike Salkauskas while fishing in Eastern Long Island Sound, He landed the 16.25-pound fish on a 2-ounce Asylum Jigz Blackfish Bug, one of the hottest blackfish jigs going right now. What makes the catch even more special is that Mike kept the fish alive, weighed it in at AW Marina in New London, and released it to keep on growing. I really commend this movement by local anglers to release the bigger fish, congrats! Moving into the surf, there are small, isolated pods of larger bass being landed – I know of fish to 30 pounds caught this week in Southern New England – but it is mostly a game of schoolie bass from micro 8-inch or so fish on up to about 20- or 22-inchers. The majority of the forage is in the form of small, slender baitfish like sand eels and silversides, and this fits perfectly with single-hook offerings like bucktails and soft plastics being your best bet. Joe of JoeBaggs Tackle sent me a bunch of pictures of bass recently caught on his Patriot Fish, and I have been fishing them on my recent outings and doing quite well, too. Give them a look! Up on the Cape, while I didn’t get a video from our friends at the Goose Hummock this week, I got word that Eric from the shop did a little trout fishing in a local kettle pond this week and was rewarded with a solid rainbow. The New England states are all about done with their annual fall trout stocking, and we have some updates at http://www.thefisherman.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=feature.display&feature_ID=2187&ParentCat=19 if you’re looking to get out for some freshwater action this weekend. Remember that if I didn’t get to your species or location of choice this week, you can always check out the complete fishing reports from Maine to the Mid-Atlantic at http://www.thefisherman.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=directory.category&PDIR=11.

AMA - a short film by Julie Gautier
JULIE: "Ama is a silent film. It tells a story everyone can interpret in their own way, based on their own experience. There is no imposition, only suggestions. I wanted to share my biggest pain in this life with this film. For this is not too crude, I covered it with grace. To make it not too heavy, I plunged it into the water. I dedicate this film to all the women of the world." Julie Credits : Choreographer : Ophélie Longuet Music : « Rain in your black eyes », Ezio Bosso. (P) Sony Music Entertainment. How To Anchor a Mega-Ship | Anchoring & Equipment Explained! | Life at Sea
In which I show you how anchoring is done on mega-ships with the use of windlass or simply by gravity. A detail breakdown of the components that make up the windlass. Brief explanation of scopes and catenary, anchor watches and anchor circle. Anchoring can be very dangerous if not done properly because it often involves massive amount of weight up more than 90,000kg in just the anchor alone without the chains.
