Global vs Local Sea Level

02:39
Rising global sea level is one of the most commonly cited consequences of climate change, but it’s often unclear how it might affect people living on the coasts. A rise in global sea level occurs due to the warming of the ocean and the addition of fresh water into the ocean basins from melting ice on land. Local sea level, known as relative sea level change, is affected by global sea level fluctuations, changes in land elevation, winds, and ocean circulation. Sea level rise

01:50
For more than 25 years, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has been monitoring sea levels around the world. Here in Florida, NOAA maintains about 15 long-term, water-level stations. One is in St. Petersburg, on a dock at Bayboro Harbo, US Coast Guard and another is on the coast at Clearwater Beach. Like most of North America, the Florida stations have green and yellow arrows pointing up, meaning that sea level is rising somewhere between 1 and 2 feet per century. The change may seem subtle, but the long-term effects could be devastating. Read more stories here: http://www.tampabay.com/photos/2018/09/07/the-state-of-water/
Sea Level & Vertical Datums - Transforming Heights Using NOAA’s VDatum

why written mean sea level on railway station?

06:20
hiii friends, We travel all the way to the railways .. Therefore, the railway station is also known. In this way some things in the railway station become commonplace for us. One of the common things is the railway board, which includes the name of the station With its height from sea level, it is also written. Even then, on this simple thing, you have ever thought that, after all, what is the purpose of this. Do you know the reason behind it? If you do not know, then know today. Mean sea level For this, first of all, you must know the meaning of height from sea level. Dar Sir scientists need to point out a similar height of the entire world, which is always the same thing. For this, scientists did not find any other option other than the sea. Because seawater always remains the same. Significantly, it is also used in civil engineering. Hence the height of the sea level is written Often you must have seen that at both ends of the railway station, the height is written from the sea level with the name of the station on the board. Let us know that this information is written not for us and yourself but especially for the driver and guard of the train. Actually, this is done because, accordingly, the driver of the train should be able to control the speed of the train. Just as if a train is going 200 meters above the height of sea level 300 meters above sea level, this board By looking at the driver, he realizes how much he has to pay speed to the train engine. Just assuming this as the basis, the engineer at the railway station refers to the elevation from the sea level on the main board of the station. The station which is located on both ends of the platform. It does not happen at all stations. It often happens at stations where the trains have to travel upstream. In this way, with the help of the Railway Sign Board, the train helps in the proper operation of the train. Along with this, electric wires on the train can also help to give a uniform height. So, the next time you are traveling to the railway and go to the railway station, then pay attention to this board.

Contributors to sea-level rise

02:59
The physical processes causing global sea-level rise are highlighted in the animation. The main causes are thermal expansion of oceans, as they accumulate the excess heat caused by greenhouse gas emissions, the melting of ice from the ice sheets and glaciers, as well as changes in land water storage such as lakes. Regionally, sea level changes vary quite dramatically. The reasons for this are different to the global causes of sea-level changes and include changes to sea water density, influenced by salinity and temperature. Railway Station Board पर क्यों लिखा होता है Height From Sea Level | वनइंडिया हिन्दी

01:26
Importance of mentioning the height from sea level at the railway stations. Think about it. If you want to know the mean sea level of any place in India(for whatever reason), how do you go about it? You need a reference point. And what better reference point than the one thing which is so well penetrated into the vastness that is India? So the MSL of a station is used as the reference for measuring the MSL for any place near the station. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe to OneIndia Hindi Channel for latest updates on movies and related videos. Sea level

22:13
Sea level is generally used to refer to mean sea level (MSL), an average level for the surface of one or more of Earth's oceans from which heights such as elevations may be measured. MSL is a type of vertical datum – a standardised geodetic reference point – that is used, for example, as a chart datum in cartography and marine navigation, or, in aviation, as the standard sea level at which atmospheric pressure is measured in order to calibrate altitude and, consequently, aircraft flight levels. A common and relatively straightforward mean sea-level standard is the midpoint between a mean low and mean high tide at a particular location. Sea levels can be affected by many factors and are known to have varied greatly over geological time scales. The careful measurement of variations in mean sea levels can offer information about climate change and has been interpreted as evidence supporting the view that the current rise in sea levels is an indicator of global warming. Sea Level

Altimetric satellites are able to measure sea level and can observe how it has been changing with climate change since 1992. Not only can they tell us the global change but also the regional changes. Sea level changes are due to thermal expansion of water, melting of the polar ice caps and continental glaciers and water inputs from land. Tide gauges are able to tell us that sea level rose at a slower rate before the 1990s and then the global sea level trend increased after that. This is likely due to the increase of greenhouse gasses and climate change. The continued observation of sea level by altimetric satellites will be able to inform us what the future of sea level is. Our Rising Oceans (VICE on HBO: Season 3, Episode 1)

42:52
Our oceans are rising. With human use of hydrocarbons skyrocketing, waters around the globe are getting hotter and, now, this warm sub-surface water is washing into Antarctica’s massive western glaciers causing the glaciers to retreat and break off. Antarctica holds 90% of the world’s ice and 70% of its freshwater, so if even a small fraction of the ice sheet in Antarctica melts, the resulting sea level rise will completely remap the world as we know it – and it is already happening. In the last decade, some of the most significant glaciers here have tripled their melt rate. VICE founder Shane Smith travels to the bottom of the world to investigate the instability of the West Antarctic ice sheet and to see first hand how the continent is melting -- and VICE follows the rising oceans to Bangladesh for a glimpse into the world's underwater future. From the UN Climate conference to the People's Climate March to the forces that deny the science of global climate change, this special extended episode covers all sides of the issue and all corners of the globe, ending with a special interview with Vice President Joe Biden. Saving Venice from Rising Sea Levels

09:52
Venice In Peril: For decades scientists have warned that the city of Venice is sinking. Now climate change is accelerating the problem, with regular and severe flooding. Is the floating city equipped to save itself? Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures "The fact that we are still waiting for any kind of solution to these problems of tourism and flooding is deeply depressing", says historian Monica Chojnacka. It may host 25 million tourists every year, but for Chojnacka, Venice's maze of bridges, canals and over 100 islands has always been home. Now, the once manageable "Acqua Alta", meaning high water, presents a growing and unchecked threat. Rising sea-levels and dissolving foundations saw the birth of the MOSE project in the 1970s, a series of 78 underwater gates secured to the lagoon's floor. "MOSE will be able to protect the city of Venice from exceptionally high water", promises Dario Berti, engineer and production manager of the company building the giant barriers, scheduled for operation in 2019. But the €6 billion project is not only unprecedented, but embroiled in misconduct. "The mayor of Venice was arrested on charges of corruption connected to this project", along with another 34 offenders, says Chojnacka. But marine scientist Luca Zaggia says there is only one way forward. "The system must work. We have no alternatives at this point. It has to work", he says. Miami's Real Estate Market is Benefiting from Rising Sea Levels (HBO)

04:21
The latest reports from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predict that sea levels are likely to rise almost three feet by the end of the century. And in South Florida, sea level rise and climate change are already having an effect on roads and drinking water. But looking at Miami Beach’s real estate market, you wouldn’t know that the city is potentially facing a half a trillion dollars in flood damage. Shane Smith met with two of Miami beach’s top real estate brokers, Jill Hertzberg and Jill Eber, to find out what’s protecting the market. He also speaks with an insurance expert from Wharton who explains how the city’s public funds come predominantly from real estate taxes — meaning that putting more property at risk is also the very thing helping Miami deal with rising seas. Why studying Thwaites glacier is vital for forecasting sea level rise

06:26
The UK and US have jointly launched a five-year research programme this week to study one of the world’s largest – and, potentially, most vulnerable – glaciers. The £20m project will focus on the Thwaites glacier in west Antarctica, which is roughly the size of Florida. Around 100 scientists will collect a wide range of data from under, above and atop the glacier up to 2023. Thwaites already accounts for about 4% of global sea level rise – and this rate has doubled since the 1990s. As a result, the Washington Post described it this week as “the world’s most dangerous glacier”. Carbon Brief spoke to Prof Sridhar Anandakrishnan, a glaciologist at Penn State’s department of geosciences. Climate change is dialing up the pressure on species around the world. Individual species aren’t the only ones at risk of extinction. In the case of Pacific coastal wetlands, an entire ecosystem type could be wiped out by a rise in the sea level, according to UCLA and U.S. Geological Survey research.
