Get ready for a jaw-dropping, eye-popping experience as you watch Gold-Silver-Bronze Medalist Joseph Michael Gatti perform the variations from Black Swan and Le Corsaire and then show "How It's Done" with Finis Jhung. Here is a thrilling display of the male bravura technique — all the virtuoso steps that stop the show and make audiences stand and cheer. Joes ability to turn is uncanny — he finishes most all his turns, including 9 pirouettes - on demi-pointe. His air turns are big and juicy, and his "trick" jumps are electrifying. Movement-by-movement, Finis and Joe go through all the steps and break down the preparations and main ideas. To help you better understand the mechanics of turns and jumps, Finis uses his teaching toys. This video is a Winner! CUSTOMER COMMENTS "This DVD is wonderful. Your instruction is so explicit—I was totally amazed at the amount of technical information you give." - Linda Caldwell, Teacher/Owner, N'styl Performance Wear, Orlando, FL "The Male Ballet Dancer DVD is a work of art in itself, and tremendously helpful. it gave me decisively useful tips on a number of techniques, including tours en l'air, that I simply never got before. it's really a program not just to watch and review, but to study. When I played it for the first time, I thought I'd watch a section or two and come back to it later, but I couldn't resist viewing one chapter after another, and before I knew it, I was watching the bonus interview at the end. Many thanks for all you bring to students of every age and level. you're living proof that we can keep learning and improving, and I'm excited about having a whole new appreciation and more importantly, a far more solid kinesthetic understanding of turns of various sorts as a direct result of your talent as a teacher, even "once removed" via media instruction." - Philip Golabuk, Director, The Field Center, Gainesville, FL "I was almost resigned to doing single tours en l'air forever - and landing on my butt quite a lot of the time, at that. Just one key hint from you in 'The Male Ballet Dancer' about what my arms should be doing in the plie, helped me get around for a double tour, twice, in my most recent class. And I had only had the DVD for a few days, too. I've still got a long way to go with my tours, but I feel like I've got a foothold now, something to work on. I hope that your tips and the different imagery you include on your DVDs continue to help me." - Tyler Saxton, Student- Computer Programmer, Melbourne, Australia "Astonishing. Astounding. The purest and most honest ballet dancing. Delivered with a lack of affectation and with seamless, fluid finishes that made rare artistry of the gimmicks." - Jennifer Dunning, The New York Times Purchase The Male Ballet Dancer at https://finisjhung.com/shop/the-male-ballet-dancer/

How to Do Pique Turns | Ballet Dance

02:22
Watch more Ballet Dancing Lessons videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/495328-How-to-Do-Pique-Turns-Ballet-Dance My name is Maegan Woodin, and I'm a professional dancer, choreographer, teacher and student. I have danced for MTV, Diana Ross, Marc Jacobs and have appeared in many music videos. You can find more information about me and my career, as well as photos and videos, at www.dgtnyc.com. I'm going to be talking to you about ballet. A pique turn is a travelling turning step in which your foot is in a forte usually with your toe behind the knee and your arms for pique turns starts from here and they are gonna open up second position in closed back in first position it's important that you don't close your arms too soon or you keep the arms in 2nd position for too long it's also important that you feel them directly in front of your belly button instead of arc to one side or the other and thinking about that bottom line again coming straight up and down when you are doing the pique turns, so just demonstrating the arms first coz they are actually one of the most important things as well spotting in pique turns so starting with your arms very rounded and strong when you get the corner you are gonna make sure that your arms are in a second position not too far behind you wanna make sure they are nice and forward and then when you start to come towards back your arms should be together at this point and then if you are going to continue on you wanna open up the second arm to continue the pique turns so you are gonna go open up to second close to first and then open up again. Making sure that you are spotting the entire time in one corner of the room .so when you are doing a pique turn sequence down in a diagonal you wanna make sure that you are stepping every time you are going to the next pique turn, stepping in front of yourself so if I was to do a pique turn directly in front of me ,I wanna make sure that I am stepping forward and coming up to forte instead of trying to come to the side you wanna make sure that your foot is always pointed in front and you are thinking about your body coming directly to that line. so I am gonna now demonstrate a sequence of pique turns in a diagonal.

From the album Bad, released August 31, 1987 Released as a single November 9, 1987 THE SHORT FILM Director: Joe Pytka Primary Production Location: Los Angeles, California Michael Jackson's short film for "The Way You Make Me Feel" was the second of nine short films produced for recordings from Bad, one of the best selling albums of all time. As a single, "The Way You Make Me Feel" hit No. 1 in two countries in 1987, topping the charts in the United States and Ireland and reaching Top 5 in the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Australia and elsewhere. In the U.S., "The Way You Make Me Feel" was the third of five consecutive No. 1 singles from one album on the Billboard Hot 100-making Michael the first artist to achieve this milestone. In the short films for the Bad album, Michael continued to expand the possibilities of the "music video" as art form, working with high-profile collaborators to realize his artistic visions. Acclaimed commercial director Joe Pytka made his mark on music videos with the short films for both "The Way You Make Me Feel" and "Dirty Diana," from Bad. "The Way You Make Me Feel" short film was designed to show off a more flirtatious and romantic yet still edgy side of Michael. In the film, a gang of brash young men pursues a girl, portrayed by model Tatiana Thumbtzen. Emerging from a crowd of these potential suitors and encouraged to "be yourself" by an old man (played by actor Joe Seneca), Michael gets the girl's attention, singing and dancing to "The Way You Make Me Feel" as his friends look on. The action unfolds across a few city blocks, culminating in a silhouetted dance routine against the backdrop of a spraying fire hydrant. At the end of the video, Michael wins the girl over, and the pair embrace. How to Do Basic Turns | Jazz Dance

04:07
Watch more Jazz Dance Moves for Beginners videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501768-How-to-Do-Basic-Turns-Jazz-Dance I’m going to break down a couple of basic jazz dance terms for you. The first one is a pirouette. Here we go. You start with the preparation. Arms are in a nice L position, you step back with your right leg, ball, change, nice deep plié into the ground, you push off your back right foot into a passé, and arms go into a round first position and then drop down to neutral. I’ll break that down one more time. Ball, change, up, and down. A great way to break this down for kids or even beginner adults is to go in the box. Ball, change, hold, and down. Face to side. Ball, change, hold, and down. Face the back, ball, change, hold, and down. Face the side, ball, change, hold, and down. Face the front. Then you break it down into a half turn. Ball, change, face the back, and down. Ball, change, face the front, and down. Important is that the passé leg is completely connected to the knee, okay. So that it’s pressed against, the core is activated, stomach is pressed down into the lower back and you’re also holding your arms in a nice round position, lifting up through the body. After the half turns then you should try for a full turn. If you step on your right and pick up your right leg you turn to the right, and ball, change, up, and down. One more time, ball, change, up, and down. That can then go into a double, triple, quadruple, or five, six, seven, eight turns as the students become more and more advanced with turning. Double, ball, change, up, up, down. You should really try to teach to clean it in a nice parallel position. We can also, and also you need to do that on the right and the left, which I’ll show you with the music. Another basic jazz turn is an inward turn. Inward turns look like this. You start with a nice tombe, arms are prepared and then you pick up your left leg but turn towards your right, using your right arm. Up, and down. Again, the inward jazz turn is up, and down. Again, keep thinking about really pushing off that back leg into the passé right away. I’ll show you to the left. Left arm opens, right arm closes, you push up into the passé and drop down. That’s the inward jazz turn. So there you are. Those are two very basic jazz turns that you can teach your students, inwards and outwards. Ball, change, passé, and down. Side, ball, change, up, and down. Face the back. Ball, change, up, and down. To the side. Ball, change, up, and down. To the front half turn, and to the front. Try to hold that releve as long as possible. Now singles. One more time. Go for a double. Good job. All right you need to reverse that to the left. I’m not going to do that right now, but you guys need to do that. So right and left are very, very important. All right here are the inward turns. Nice tombe, and use your arms pull it up. Up, and down. Good, one more time. Up and down. Other side I will do this time. Up and down. One more time. Up and down. Good. Really try to sustain those turns and lengthen up through your torso.

Don Quixote - Act I finale (Marianela Nuñez and Carlos Acosta, The Royal Ballet)

04:53
Carlos Acosta as Don Quixote, Marianela Nuñez as Kitri, Yuhui Choe and Beatriz Stix-Brunell as Kitri's friends, Luca Acri, Paul Kay, Kenta Kura and Michael Stojko as the Rascals, Philip Mosley as Sancho Panza, Gary Avis as Lorenzo and Bennet Gartside as Gamache in Carlos Acosta's production of Marius Petipa's Don Quixote, with music by Ludwig Minkus. Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk/productions/donquixote Carlos Acosta, Principal Guest Artist of The Royal Ballet, created his first work for the Company in 2013. He chose one of his favourite ballets – Marius Petipa's Don Quixote, a joyful adaptation of Miguel de Cervantes's classic novel. Acosta's production has proved itself a firm audience favourite, acclaimed for its breathtakingly virtuoso dancing, eye-popping designs by Tim Hatley and the sheer energy and exuberance of the production as a whole. The adventures of the bumbling knight Don Quixote and his ever-faithful squire Sancho Panza have been the inspiration for countless ballets, of which Petipa's is one of the best loved. Acosta has danced the virtuoso role of Basilio many times, and brings that experience to his unique and vibrant vision of the story. Ludwig Minkus's score, created for Petipa, is full of Spanish flair and atmosphere. Don Quixote, with its famously bravura Act III pas de deux and infectious ebullience, is wonderfully entertaining.

How to Do the 5 Basic Positions | Ballet Dance

03:08
Watch more Ballet Dancing Lessons videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/497197-How-to-Do-the-5-Basic-Positions-Ballet-Dance My name is Maegan Woodin, and I'm a professional dancer, choreographer, teacher and student. I have danced for MTV, Diana Ross, Marc Jacobs and have appeared in many music videos. You can find more information about me and my career, as well as photos and videos, at www.dgtnyc.com. I'm going to be talking to you about ballet. The five basic positions of ballet are the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. So first position is when your toes are apart and your heels are squeezed directly together. A lot of people try to turn out the toes too much, and this creates stress in the knees, so follow your natural turnout line, and stand fully supported, very tall, making sure you're not rolling onto the inside of your foot, or rolling to the outside. Make sure that your feet and your weight are directly over and centered onto your toes. And then your arms are going to be like a round beach ball, and you should have your arms directly in front of your belly button not too high and not too low so directly in front of your belly button, your chest is open and your shoulders are down and you are engaging your back, and you stand in first position. Second position, your arms and legs are out to the side, and you actually want to gauge the length of your second position by putting one toe next to your heel, then opening it up, and then extending it a little further. you shouldn't have too wide a second position, or too narrow, because you wont be fully supported when you're moving around in that position. Second position arms are rounded and slightly forward, you dont want to throw your arms too far back, so keep them nice, round, and forward, and that's second position. Third position is used on a very basic level. It is when you are practicing to get to fifth position. You want to put your heel in the centre of your foot, and stand with both feet firmly on the ground, feet turned out. Your arms are going to come one high above your head and one directly to the side. Make sure that both arms are rounded and that your chest is lifted and your neck is long. Fourth position, your leg comes out, and your heel is going to try to become in front of that toe, and your arm is going to be coming in front of your belly button. We want to make sure that your fourth position is not too wide, just like second position, and not too narrow. You want to have a pretty narrow fourth position, which will help you when you do turns in the centre. Fifth position, both arms are up very high, and your chest is open, shoulders down, and your feet and heels are going to be connected. You don't want to try to squeeze your turnout and make both feet and heels connected fully, you want to follow the natural line of your turnout, and make sure that when you pliet, your knees are going directly over your toes. So standing in fifth position, your arms are going to go all the way up, like this, and thats high fifth, and then low fifth, your arms are down here.

How Ballerinas Customize Their Pointe Shoes

05:32
Olivia Boisson is a corps de ballet member with New York City Ballet. Boisson has been with NYC Ballet for seven years. As a corps member, Boisson dances 10 to 12 hours a day, six days a week. She showed us how she customizes her pointe shoes for performances. ------------------------------------------------------ INSIDER is great journalism about what passionate people actually want to know. Olivia Boisson: Hi, I'm Olivia Boisson. I'm a corps de ballet member with the New York City Ballet. Every dancer is trying to make their pointe shoe a part of them, so they wanna mold it to their foot as much as possible. So there's a lot involved to make that happen. It's really important, because we have them on from 10:00 a.m., to 11:00 p.m., so you wanna make sure that there's nothing bothering you. So you fix them and fix them until they're right. If I'm performing and rehearsing a lot, it could be up to three pairs a day. They aren't very strong when you're working with them all day. So, they typically do die pretty fast. Regular ballet flats are just, very soft. They're usually canvas, or leather. You can't go up en pointe with them. Pointe shoes are normally a bit harder so that you can get up on your toes. And men typically wear the ballet flats, and women normally wear them to warm up, but not always. Pointe shoes are around $80 to $90 a pair. At least that's how much they were when I was growing up. But the company gives all the pointe shoes for free, so we have as many as we need. Every dancer sews their pointe shoes differently. All to support your ankle in different ways. I put mine a little bit further forward, probably like an inch away from this seam. I'm just gonna smush the box. The box is where your toes go, and it's typically pretty tough, and pretty hard when you get a new shoe, and so you want it to be a little bit more malleable so that you can move your toes inside the box. So, I'm gonna smush them. I need to be able to move that part, so I'm gonna stick my heel in the middle, and pop it like that, so that, now I can bend this part of the shoe. This is called the shank. It's kind of like, your arch support. But you want it to bend, so that you can point your foot. So now they bend in here and they bend here, so it's a little easier for me to get my foot in there. Now I'm gonna bang them, because they're still pretty loud. And when you're dancing, it's very distracting. Alright. I usually will put a little Second Skin. They're like little gel squares. So, I usually put them at the tips of my big toes, 'cause that is where most of the pressure is when I'm en pointe, and then I tape them so that they stay on. And then I'm gonna put an elastic here, and then I'm gonna put my paper towels on. I just wanna get a good bend in my shoe, which is why I'm like, pushing them out like this. They feel pretty good. Alright, so now the bottom of the shoe is all, not as smooth, so it's harder to like, slip. So, this is rosin. You can like, smash it and it becomes powder and you kind of, just wipe your foot. Like, the edges that are slippery, and it's a lot less, slippery. Sometimes the very tip here will get very soft. So then I will use this hot glue to harden it back up again. That way you don't have to like, sew a whole new shoe. You can sort of make this last a little bit longer. Some dancers will put it on the outside. Sometimes they do that, to give it a little bit more support at the top, so that it's not so soft when you get up. With a new pair, it just really keeps you all the way up. With a dead pair, it'd get really soft in here. Everything would just be much more soft. So it's harder to dance hours and hours when the shoe isn't keeping you up. You have to do a lot more work.
