MEN OF PUKAR
Contemporary Photo-Art Show in Poompuhar
The exhibition of images from Men of Pukar by contemporary Indian photographer Abul Kalam Azad with the support of India Foundation for the Arts taken by was opened on December 28, with a formal inauguration ceremony being organized by the local leaders, organizations and art enthusiasts. This is the first such event in rural Tamil Nadu, and the native crowd got to participate in an art project which focused on them. The subjects of the photographs were familiar and personal to a large majority of the visitors.
Many other local entrepreneurs had extended support in the organising the show. Ekalokam Trust for Photography (EtP), Poompuhar Tamil Sangam and Thiruvengadu Lion's Club extended local support and co-hosted the exhibition. M Sangar Pillai, an active politician from Tamil Manila Congress, provided the best possible support for the team during the planning and preparation stages, effectively playing a lead role in the show's organization and delivered the presidential address. Tulsi Swarna Lakshmi, managing trustee of EtP, welcomed the gathering. Prof. Dr. A R C Shanmugam inaugurated the show. Pulavar N Thyagrajan, Dr. J Rajamoorthy, Prof. T Thyagarajan, Prof. R Viswanathan, Ali Hussain, T Akoramurthy, Muhammad Younus, M S Karthik and Karuppu Karuna were the other speakers who delivered measured words. Kulanthaivel, vice-chairman of EtP, delivered the vote of thanks.
The show itself was organized with high quality prints and precise planning. The venue is a traditional Karaikudi Chettiyar house, inside which the photographs are placed on walls. The building, with all its signs of age and deterioration, is an important part of the exhibit, and the colours and decorations that were part of the house were left untouched. The cultural continuity that forms an integral part of Men of Pukar series, which is the third part of Abul Kalam Azad's ongoing Story of Love, Desire and Agony series that draws its inspiration from Classical-era epic Cilappathikaram was emphasized through the juxtaposition of photography and traditional architecture and design, and displayed.
