The Video Explains the difference between Local Partitioned Indexes(Prefixed vs Non Prefixed Indexes). and Global Partitioned Index along with the challenges in maintaining Global partitioned Indexes when the underlying tables partitioned is dropped/truncated/Merged/Moved. Local Partitioned Index Shares the same boundaries as the table and are in the same number as table partitions they are widely used in DSS and DWH systems. While Global Partitioned Index are predominantly used in OLTP systems

1.Shrink the Table: Shrinking is started from 10g. In this method I’m using user u1 and table name sm1. Now I’m deleting some rows in sm1 COUNT ---------- 1048576 Table sm1 has 1048576 rows. [email protected]: delete from sm1 where deptno=10; 262144 rows deleted. I deleted above number of rows. Rows COUNT ---------- 786432 And I’m giving commit [email protected]: commit; Commit complete. So now we have 786432 rows in sm1 table. Now see the following command [email protected]: select OWNER,TABLESPACE_NAME,SEGMENT_NAME,SEGMENT_TYPE,BYTES/1024/1024||' mb'"space",BLOCKS,EXTENTS from dba_segments where tablespace_name like 'U%TS'; OWNER TABLESPACE_NAME SEGMENT_NAME SEGMENT_TYPE space BLOCKS EXTENTS ----- --------------- ------------- ------------- ------ ---------- ---------- U1 U1TS SM1 TABLE 29 mb 3712 44 After I deleted some rows in sm1 table still above result showing same values, so now our duty is shrink this table. This is done by following 2 ways, i By using COMPACT key word: In this method shrinking is done in two phases. In the first phase all fragmented space are just defragmented, but still the High Water Mark is persist with last used block only. That mean used free blocks are not de allocated and HWM is not updated here. Issue the following command before use shrink command. [email protected] alter table sm1 enable row movement; Table altered. There is particular use with above command, when we shrink the table all rows are moves to contiguous blocks, so here row movement should be done. By default the row movement is disabled for any table, so above command enabled the row movement. Then execute shrink command now. [email protected]: alter table sm1 shrink space compact; Table altered. Now see the space of table by using below command. [email protected]: select OWNER,TABLESPACE_NAME,SEGMENT_NAME,SEGMENT_TYPE,BYTES/1024/1024||' mb'"space",BLOCKS,EXTENTS from dba_segments where tablespace_name like 'U%TS'; OWNER TABLESPACE_NAME SEGMENT_NAME SEGMENT_TYPE space BLOCKS EXTENTS ----- --------------- ------------- ------------- ------ ---------- ---------- U1 U1TS SM1 TABLE 29 mb 3712 44 So here seems nothing happened with above shrink command, but internally the fragmented space is defragmented. But the high water mark is not updated, used free blocks are also not de allocated. For de allocating the used blocks we have to execute below command. This is the second phase. [email protected]: alter table sm1 shrink space; Table altered. Now see the space by using below command. [email protected]: select OWNER,TABLESPACE_NAME,SEGMENT_NAME,SEGMENT_TYPE,BYTES/1024/1024||' mb'"space",BLOCKS,EXTENTS from dba_segments where tablespace_name like 'U%TS'; OWNER TABLESPACE_NAME SEGMENT_NAME SEGMENT_TYPE space BLOCKS EXTENTS ----- --------------- ------------- ------------- ---------- ---------- ---------- U1 U1TS SM1 TABLE 20.8125 mb 2664 36 So now the space of sm1 table is reduced. Note: Actually the alter table sm1 shrink space command will complete these two phases of the shrinking of table at a time. But here we done shrink process in two phases because when we use alter table sm1 shrink space command the table locked temporarily some time period, during this period users unable to access the table. So if we use alter table sm1 shrink space compact command the table is not locked but space is defragmented. When we not in business hours issue the second phase shrink command then users are won’t get any problem. ii Because of above method the table dependent objects are goes to invalid state, to overcome this problem we have to use below command. [email protected]: alter table sm1 shrink space cascade; Table altered. The above command also shrinks the space of all dependent objects. We also do this in two phases like above two phases. See the below command. [email protected]: alter table sm1 shrink space compact cascade; Table altered. And then [email protected]: alter table sm1 shrink space cascade; Table altered. over partition by in sql server 2008 sql server over clause partition partition by clause in sql server 2008 over partition by clause in sql In this video we will discuss the power and use of Over clause in SQL Server. The OVER clause combined with PARTITION BY is used to break up data into partitions. Syntax : function (...) OVER (PARTITION BY col1, Col2, ...) The specified function operates for each partition. For example : COUNT(Gender) OVER (PARTITION BY Gender) will partition the data by GENDER i.e there will 2 partitions (Male and Female) and then the COUNT() function is applied over each partition. Any of the following functions can be used. Please note this is not the complete list. COUNT(), AVG(), SUM(), MIN(), MAX(), ROW_NUMBER(), RANK(), DENSE_RANK() etc. Example : SQl Script to create Employees table Create Table Employees ( Id int primary key, Name nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(10), Salary int ) Go Insert Into Employees Values (1, 'Mark', 'Male', 5000) Insert Into Employees Values (2, 'John', 'Male', 4500) Insert Into Employees Values (3, 'Pam', 'Female', 5500) Insert Into Employees Values (4, 'Sara', 'Female', 4000) Insert Into Employees Values (5, 'Todd', 'Male', 3500) Insert Into Employees Values (6, 'Mary', 'Female', 5000) Insert Into Employees Values (7, 'Ben', 'Male', 6500) Insert Into Employees Values (8, 'Jodi', 'Female', 7000) Insert Into Employees Values (9, 'Tom', 'Male', 5500) Insert Into Employees Values (10, 'Ron', 'Male', 5000) Go Write a query to retrieve total count of employees by Gender. Also in the result we want Average, Minimum and Maximum salary by Gender. This can be very easily achieved using a simple GROUP BY query as show below. SELECT Gender, COUNT(*) AS GenderTotal, AVG(Salary) AS AvgSal, MIN(Salary) AS MinSal, MAX(Salary) AS MaxSal FROM Employees GROUP BY Gender What if we want non-aggregated values (like employee Name and Salary) in result set along with aggregated values You cannot include non-aggregated columns in the GROUP BY query. SELECT Name, Salary, Gender, COUNT(*) AS GenderTotal, AVG(Salary) AS AvgSal, MIN(Salary) AS MinSal, MAX(Salary) AS MaxSal FROM Employees GROUP BY Gender The above query will result in the following error : Column 'Employees.Name' is invalid in the select list because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause One way to achieve this is by including the aggregations in a subquery and then JOINING it with the main query as shown in the example below. Look at the amount of T-SQL code we have to write. SELECT Name, Salary, Employees.Gender, Genders.GenderTotals, Genders.AvgSal, Genders.MinSal, Genders.MaxSal FROM Employees INNER JOIN (SELECT Gender, COUNT(*) AS GenderTotals, AVG(Salary) AS AvgSal, MIN(Salary) AS MinSal, MAX(Salary) AS MaxSal FROM Employees GROUP BY Gender) AS Genders ON Genders.Gender = Employees.Gender Better way of doing this is by using the OVER clause combined with PARTITION BY SELECT Name, Salary, Gender, COUNT(Gender) OVER(PARTITION BY Gender) AS GenderTotals, AVG(Salary) OVER(PARTITION BY Gender) AS AvgSal, MIN(Salary) OVER(PARTITION BY Gender) AS MinSal, MAX(Salary) OVER(PARTITION BY Gender) AS MaxSal FROM Employees Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/over-clause-in-sql-server.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/over-clause-in-sql-server_29.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists

To learn more visit: http://bit.ly/SolarWinds_DPA See how SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer identifies SQL Server and Oracle performance issues on the AWS Cloud. Connect with SolarWinds: THWACK IT Community: http://thwack.solarwinds.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SolarWinds Twitter: https://twitter.com/solarwinds LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/company/solarwinds Instagram: http://instagram.com/solarwindsinc/ Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/solarwinds_inc/ TRANSCRIPT: In this video, you will learn how SolarWinds® Database Performance Analyzer or DPA for short, can be easily deployed on Amazon® Web Services, to monitor both RDS® and EC2® database servers. In addition, you will see how to identify and resolve database performance issues having the largest impact on your applications. To deploy DPA in the cloud, simply go to the Amazon marketplace and search for SolarWinds. Click on 'Continue' to deploy the AMI. Once deployed, all the additional configurations are completed through the web browser interface. The next step will be to register your database instances to be monitored by clicking on 'Register DB Instance for Monitoring.' In this case, we have already registered an instance. Let's look at DPA to find and isolate a performance problem. A customer has just called in and complained of slowness in their order entry application. To troubleshoot, first log into DPA and review the main dashboard. This will give us a high-level overview of what is happening in our environment. It’s interesting that the order entry database (PRODOE-RDS) is showing several alarms. Let's take a closer look by drilling into that database. From the trend screen, first look to the Advice tab for any critical or warning statuses. The top 2 SQL statements which are in a critical state are especially interesting. For the first statement, the adviser is telling us that there are high amounts of blocking for this insert statement on January 20th. By drilling into that day in the trend screen, we can see a 24-hour view of the top 15 SQL statements. For our insert statement, we can quickly see that it has been running every hour with a huge spike beginning in the 9:00 am hour. By drilling into that hour, we can view the blockers tab to see who is blocking this SQL statement. Here we can see that process ID of 83 has actually been blocking many other sessions for a long time. Each of these processes have spent over half an hour trying to run this insert statement. Look at the blocker details, we can quickly identify the user and see that they were performing an update to the same table. Now we can begin work on resolving this issue. Let's look at the tuning advice for our second SQL statement in Alarm. In this case, click on the 'More' link to see all of the details about the query and then review the execution plan. Notice that the adviser is suggesting several new indexes. At this point, we can decide to create and test them to see if they help improve performance. To maximize the value that DPA delivers, 24x7 monitoring is recommended. As DPA continues to monitor and collect data, the more comprehensive the analysis becomes especially when identifying trends and anomalies over time. One surprise that many of our customers have learned, is that it's not always the best idea or cost-effective to provision large database servers in the cloud. Instead, start with a small or medium-sized installation, use DPA to monitor performance, then add more resources when you need to. Test drive DPA today, just visit www.solarwinds.com/dpa.

Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2014/09/part-12-can-we-join-two-tables-without.html Can we join two tables without primary foreign key relation Yes, we can join two tables without primary foreign key relation as long as the column values involved in the join can be converted to one type. ID column in Departments table is not the primary Key and DepartmentId column in Employees table is not the foreign key. But we can still join these tables using ID column from Departments table and DepartmentId column from Employees table, as both the columns involved in the join have same data type i.e int. Select Employees.Name as EmployeeName, Departments.Name as DepartmentName from Employees join Departments on Departments.ID = Employees.DepartmentId The obious next question is, if primary foreign key relation is not mandatory for 2 tables to be joined then what is the use of these keys? Primary key enforces uniqueness of values over one or more columns. Since ID is not a primary key in Departments table, 2 or more departments may end up having same ID value, which makes it impossible to distinguish between them based on the ID column value. Foreign key enforces referential integrity. Without foreign key constraint on DepartmentId column in Employees table, it is possible to insert a row into Employees table with a value for DepartmentId column that does not exist in Departments table. The following insert statement, successfully inserts a new Employee into Employees table whose DepartmentId is 100. But we don't have a department with ID = 100 in Departments table. This means this employee row is an orphan row, and the referential integrity is lost as result Insert into Employees values (8, 'Mary', 'Female', 80000, 100) If we have had a foreign key constraint on DepartmentId column in Employees table, the following insert statement would have failed with the following error. Msg 547, Level 16, State 0, Line 1 The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint. The conflict occurred in database "Sample", table "dbo.Departments", column 'ID'.

running total sql server cumulative total in ms sql server running total column In this video we will discuss how to calculate running total in SQL Server 2012 and later versions. We will use the following Employees table for the examples in this video. SQL Script to create Employees table Create Table Employees ( Id int primary key, Name nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(10), Salary int ) Go Insert Into Employees Values (1, 'Mark', 'Male', 5000) Insert Into Employees Values (2, 'John', 'Male', 4500) Insert Into Employees Values (3, 'Pam', 'Female', 5500) Insert Into Employees Values (4, 'Sara', 'Female', 4000) Insert Into Employees Values (5, 'Todd', 'Male', 3500) Insert Into Employees Values (6, 'Mary', 'Female', 5000) Insert Into Employees Values (7, 'Ben', 'Male', 6500) Insert Into Employees Values (8, 'Jodi', 'Female', 7000) Insert Into Employees Values (9, 'Tom', 'Male', 5500) Insert Into Employees Values (10, 'Ron', 'Male', 5000) Go SQL Query to compute running total without partitions SELECT Name, Gender, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER (ORDER BY ID) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees SQL Query to compute running total with partitions SELECT Name, Gender, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER (PARTITION BY Gender ORDER BY ID) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees What happens if I use order by on Salary column If you have duplicate values in the Salary column, all the duplicate values will be added to the running total at once. In the example below notice that we have 5000 repeated 3 times. So 15000 (i.e 5000 + 5000 + 5000) is added to the running total at once. SELECT Name, Gender, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER (ORDER BY Salary) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees So when computing running total, it is better to use a column that has unique data in the ORDER BY clause. Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2013/01/cursors-in-sql-server-part-63.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2013/09/part-63-cursors-in-sql-server.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists Relational Database Management Systems, including sql server are very good at handling data in SETS. For example, the following "UPDATE" query, updates a set of rows that matches the condition in the "WHERE" clause at the same time. Update tblProductSales Set UnitPrice = 50 where ProductId = 101 However, if there is ever a need to process the rows, on a row-by-row basis, then cursors are your choice. Cursors are very bad for performance, and should be avoided always. Most of the time, cursors can be very easily replaced using joins. There are different types of cursors in sql server as listed below. We will talk about the differences between these cursor types in a later video session. 1. Forward-Only 2. Static 3. Keyset 4. Dynamic Let us now look at a simple example of using sql server cursor to process one row at time. We will be using tblProducts and tblProductSales tables, for this example. On my machine, there are 400,000 records in tblProducts and 600,000 records in tblProductSales tables. If you want to learn about generating huge amounts of random test data, please watch Part - 61 in sql server video tutorial. The link is below. http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/videos?flow=grid&view=1 Cursor Example: Let us say, I want to update the UNITPRICE column in tblProductSales table, based on the following criteria 1. If the ProductName = 'Product - 55', Set Unit Price to 55 2. If the ProductName = 'Product - 65', Set Unit Price to 65 3. If the ProductName is like 'Product - 100%', Set Unit Price to 1000 For the SQL code samples used in the demo please visit my blog at the following link http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2013/01/cursors-in-sql-server-part-63.html The cursor will loop thru each row in tblProductSales table. As there are 600,000 rows, to be processed on a row-by-row basis, it takes around 40 to 45 seconds on my machine. We can achieve this very easily using a join, and this will significantly increase the performance. We will discuss about this in our next video session. To check if the rows have been correctly updated, please use the following query. Select Name, UnitPrice from tblProducts join tblProductSales on tblProducts.Id = tblProductSales.ProductId where (Name='Product - 55' or Name='Product - 65' or Name like 'Product - 100%')

What happens when you keep a transaction open in MySQL while other sessions modify data. The tablespace is forced to grow until the hanging transaction is committed(8:40), at that point the 'old' record views can be discarded and all allocated space marked as deleted and can be reused. The tablespace file is not shrinked (unless you use innodb_file_per_table and do an OPTIMIZE TABLE, 11:30). The graphical view is done with Jeremy Cole's InnoDB Ruby tools (Thanks!)

SAP ASE 16 Learning Part 19 Advanced Backup Techniques. To Learn or Teach Linux visit www.theskillpedia.com, A Marketplace for Learners and Trainers. Session 19 Advanced Backup Techniques Ram N Sangwan Threshold - Stored procedure sp_thresholdaction Sybase does not provide this procedure. You can add thresholds and create threshold procedures for any segment in a database. sp_thresholdaction should contain a dump transaction command to truncate the transaction log. Threshold - Stored procedure sp_thresholdaction Call to the Procedure Waking suspended processes Loading a transaction log to a point in time Loading a transaction log to a point in time After you load a transaction log using until_time, Adaptive Server restarts the database’s log sequence. This means that until you dump the database again, you cannot load subsequent transaction logs after the load transaction using until_time. You must dump the database before you can dump another transaction log. Bringing the databases online After you have applied all transaction log dumps to a database, use online database to make it available for use. For example, to bring the mydb database online, enter: online database mydb Upgrading a dump to the current version The database offline status bit If a cache does not exist, Adaptive Server writes a warning to the error log, and the binding in sysattributes is marked as invalid. Cache bindings and loading databases Databases and cache bindings There are two procedures for recreating the master database: replacement of the master device, and forcing SAP ASE to re-create the configuration area. Replace the master device when the master database is corrupted. If the master device’s configuration area is also corrupt, force SAP ASE to re-create the configuration area. You can often detect corruption in the configuration area because the server does not run, and produces error messages stating the area is corrupt. Replacing the Master Device Rebuilding the Configuration Area If the configuration area is corrupt, you must use the dataserver -f option to force SAP ASE to reconstruct the configuration area. Prerequisites The following restrictions apply: Any allocation units on the disk that appear corrupt, or that are not currently allocated, are allocated to the master database. The -w master option, with or without -f, re-creates only the master database. All other allocation units on the disk remain unchanged, so you may be able to recover the data using disk refit. Rebuilding the Configuration Area If the entire master device is corrupt (for example, in the case of a disk failure), replace the entire device by starting SAP ASE using the dataserver -zpage_size. . .-bdevice_size: Task If the existing master device is not on a raw partition and you plan to reuse it, remove the old master device file. The disk refit Rebuilds the master database’s sysusages and sysdatabases system tables from information contained in sysdevices. Adaptive Server automatically shuts down after disk refit rebuilds the system tables. Use disk refit after disk reinit as part of the procedure to restore the master database. disk refit Thank You
