1.Shrink the Table: Shrinking is started from 10g. In this method I’m using user u1 and table name sm1. Now I’m deleting some rows in sm1 COUNT ---------- 1048576 Table sm1 has 1048576 rows. [email protected]: delete from sm1 where deptno=10; 262144 rows deleted. I deleted above number of rows. Rows COUNT ---------- 786432 And I’m giving commit [email protected]: commit; Commit complete. So now we have 786432 rows in sm1 table. Now see the following command [email protected]: select OWNER,TABLESPACE_NAME,SEGMENT_NAME,SEGMENT_TYPE,BYTES/1024/1024||' mb'"space",BLOCKS,EXTENTS from dba_segments where tablespace_name like 'U%TS'; OWNER TABLESPACE_NAME SEGMENT_NAME SEGMENT_TYPE space BLOCKS EXTENTS ----- --------------- ------------- ------------- ------ ---------- ---------- U1 U1TS SM1 TABLE 29 mb 3712 44 After I deleted some rows in sm1 table still above result showing same values, so now our duty is shrink this table. This is done by following 2 ways, i By using COMPACT key word: In this method shrinking is done in two phases. In the first phase all fragmented space are just defragmented, but still the High Water Mark is persist with last used block only. That mean used free blocks are not de allocated and HWM is not updated here. Issue the following command before use shrink command. [email protected] alter table sm1 enable row movement; Table altered. There is particular use with above command, when we shrink the table all rows are moves to contiguous blocks, so here row movement should be done. By default the row movement is disabled for any table, so above command enabled the row movement. Then execute shrink command now. [email protected]: alter table sm1 shrink space compact; Table altered. Now see the space of table by using below command. [email protected]: select OWNER,TABLESPACE_NAME,SEGMENT_NAME,SEGMENT_TYPE,BYTES/1024/1024||' mb'"space",BLOCKS,EXTENTS from dba_segments where tablespace_name like 'U%TS'; OWNER TABLESPACE_NAME SEGMENT_NAME SEGMENT_TYPE space BLOCKS EXTENTS ----- --------------- ------------- ------------- ------ ---------- ---------- U1 U1TS SM1 TABLE 29 mb 3712 44 So here seems nothing happened with above shrink command, but internally the fragmented space is defragmented. But the high water mark is not updated, used free blocks are also not de allocated. For de allocating the used blocks we have to execute below command. This is the second phase. [email protected]: alter table sm1 shrink space; Table altered. Now see the space by using below command. [email protected]: select OWNER,TABLESPACE_NAME,SEGMENT_NAME,SEGMENT_TYPE,BYTES/1024/1024||' mb'"space",BLOCKS,EXTENTS from dba_segments where tablespace_name like 'U%TS'; OWNER TABLESPACE_NAME SEGMENT_NAME SEGMENT_TYPE space BLOCKS EXTENTS ----- --------------- ------------- ------------- ---------- ---------- ---------- U1 U1TS SM1 TABLE 20.8125 mb 2664 36 So now the space of sm1 table is reduced. Note: Actually the alter table sm1 shrink space command will complete these two phases of the shrinking of table at a time. But here we done shrink process in two phases because when we use alter table sm1 shrink space command the table locked temporarily some time period, during this period users unable to access the table. So if we use alter table sm1 shrink space compact command the table is not locked but space is defragmented. When we not in business hours issue the second phase shrink command then users are won’t get any problem. ii Because of above method the table dependent objects are goes to invalid state, to overcome this problem we have to use below command. [email protected]: alter table sm1 shrink space cascade; Table altered. The above command also shrinks the space of all dependent objects. We also do this in two phases like above two phases. See the below command. [email protected]: alter table sm1 shrink space compact cascade; Table altered. And then [email protected]: alter table sm1 shrink space cascade; Table altered. Now a days enterprises run databases of hundred of Gigabytes in size. These databases are known as Very Large Databases (VLDB). From Oracle Ver. 8.0 Oracle has provided the feature of table partitioning i.e. you can partition a table according to some criteria . For example you have a SALES table with the following structure Suppose this table contains millions of records, but all the records belong to four years only i.e. 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994. And most of the time you are concerned about only one year i.e. you give queries like the following select sum(amt) from sales where year=1991; select product,sum(amt) from sales where year=1992 Group by product; Now whenever you give queries like this Oracle will search the whole table. If you partition this table according to year, then the performance is improve since oracle will scan only a single partition instead of whole table. This type of partitioning is useful when dealing with data that has logical ranges into which it can be distributed; for example, value of year. Performance is best when the data evenly distributes across the range

One common way that partitioning can improve performance for loading data is the sliding window method but in this post I am mainly talking about how to improve read performance. NOTE :- First do this on a test environment 1. I made the partition type as Standard and let Centos create them Automatically.. / partition was /dev/sda3 and with 8.71GB Format Option was xfs 2. After running "parted" it shows my existing disk size is 10.7GB .. Lets increase it up to 15Gb and give a restart 3. Run a "Parted" again and check new disk size. now it shows 16.1GB 4. Now we are going to increase size of / partition (/dev/sda3). Please note that to do this the partition you are going to increase should be the last partition on partition table . 5. First we have to delete the existing / partition entry from Partition table . Dont worry this will not delete your data . 6. Run fdisk /dev/sda 7. Type "p" to print partition table . Check if the /dev/sda3 drive have bootable flag (*) and make a note of the starting cylinder. When creating the new parttion with increased size the starting cylinder of the new partition should be the same as the old one 8. Type "d" and select partition that you are going to delete . ( the last one) 9. Now create a new one . Make the partition type as primary . Extend will destroy everything 8. Give the starting cylinder as same as the old one . If your are going to use the whole available space for this partion just type return for the end cylinder . it will allocate all available space to this new partition 9. Now type "w" and write these changes to the partition table . 10. Check blkid of the new partition and make changes to fstab if necessary 11. Now go ahead and restart your computer . 12. This partition will not be resized until we run resize2fs or xfs_growfs . resize2fs only supports ext file format partitions . This is a xfs partition so we have to use xfx_growfs tool . 13. First run xfs_info /dev/sda3 to check current details of the partition . 14. Then run xfs_growfs /dev/sda3 this will do on-line resize of our / partion . Thats it . Hope this tutorial helped you .

I will show you how to recover them. Though Oracle VirtualBox is a virtual machine, real data can be saved there. As we have already said, all files stored in virtual machine disks are located in .vdi files of the virtual disk (in our case). Hetman Partition Recovery, the program for hard disk data recovery, has the function of mounting virtual disks and recovering data from such disks. You can download Hetman Partition Recovery here: https://hetmanrecovery.com/hard_drive_recovery/software.htm In order to get access to virtual machine files: 1. Run Hetman Partition Recovery and mount the virtual machine disk. If there are several of them, you can mount them all at once or one by one. To mount a virtual disk with the help of Hetman Partition Recovery, click on Mount Disk in the quick access menu of the program. As a result, the window of choosing a virtual disk will open. Go to the folder containing the virtual machine and choose the necessary virtual disk file. Open 2. As you do that, the section “Mounted Disks” containing the list of mounted virtual disks will appear in the window, where all disks found by the application are shown. If you mount several disks, you will see the entire disk list there. 3. Scan the disk with the application by clicking on the disk in the disk manager 4. After the analysis, the application will show the directory tree of the scanned disk. 5. Find and recover the necessary files to a convenient location in your main operating system. By the way, you can use this method to move files from a virtual machine disk to the main operating system. The methods we have described for recovering data of an Oracle VM VirtualBox virtual machine are good for virtual machine regardless of their virtual disk format: *.vdi, *.vmdk, *.vhd, *.vhdx, *.hdd, *.qed, *.qcow and they will be absolutely similar for all of these virtual disk formats. It is recommended to update your statistics after you insert a larger amount of data into ascending or descending key columns because in such cases the statistics histogram might not have any information about the newly inserted values. This task is used to update SQL Server information about the data in the tables and indexes. This task resamples the distribution statistics of each index created on user tables in the database. The distribution statistics are used by SQL Server to optimize navigation through tables during the processing of Transact-SQL statements. To build the distribution statistics automatically, SQL Server periodically samples the data in the corresponding table for each index.This size of the sample is based on the number of rows in the table and the frequency of data modification. Use this option to perform an additional sampling using the specified percentage of data in the tables. SQL Server uses this information to create better query plans. This task executes the UPDATE STATISTICS statement.
