A Cutting Edge documentary that looks at the impact, on both children and parents, when children are sent away from the family home not for bad behaviour – but for the sake of their education. We follow four eight-year-old girls as they adjust to a new life away from their parents and their home. Each of their parents has decided that their child will be better off boarding in a private school, in this instance Highfield, one of the best boarding schools in the UK. But how do they cope being separated from their families at such a young age? And how in particular do the mothers deal with the difficult decision of sending their offspring away to be educated? Nurture is the new home for captivating and interesting documentaries and shows about all things parenting. We will be uploading every week so subscribe to keep updated. For two years, I went to a British public boarding school, and recently, I attended a reunion. I talk about them. Support me on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Lindybeige More ranty videos here:https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL92609E6F61F4E5A4 It was difficult in the edit to achieve the balance I wanted, but this can be redressed in later videos. I recorded a few more pieces to camera and took more shots of the school. I don't feature the people there because this was a personal project, and it would be unfair to involve them in something they may find expresses opinions and ideas with which they disagree. Besides, I wanted to talk to old friends, not poke a camera in their faces. They're sexy, they're beautiful, and they're bad. Bad enough to be locked up in a girls' detention facility. Voluptuous Jenny, an accomplice in a convenience store robbery, is a new inmate. She befriends timid Lisa, a runaway who welcomes Jenny's protectiveness over her. Ruthless dorm matron, Edna, beats and punishes the girls. Sadistically, she takes Lisa's stuffed rabbit, her only form of security, away from her. When vulnerable Lisa is raped by a female inmate, she commits suicide. Her death incites a riot and Jenny leads some of the girls to the authorities in an effort to expose the atrocities that take place at the facility.

Seema Bansal forged a path to public education reform for 15,000 schools in Haryana, India, by setting an ambitious goal: by 2020, 80 percent of children should have grade-level knowledge. She's looking to meet this goal by seeking reforms that will work in every school without additional resources. Bansal and her team have found success using creative, straightforward techniques such as communicating with teachers using SMS group chats, and they have already measurably improved learning and engagement in Haryana's schools. This BAFTA award winning film deals with a subject often whispered but rarely spoken about - the sexual abuse of boys by teachers in Britain’s private schools. For thirty years the boys, and the men they became, stayed silent, nursing the dark secret of the abuse they suffered. But in this film, Tom, Mark and Alastair break that silence with spellbinding articulation and breathtaking honesty – telling their stories straight to the camera. If you wish to find out more the people featured in this documentary then go to http://truevisiontv.com/foundation Following broadcast of ‘Chosen’ in September 08 on both More4 and then again in December on Channel4 (a terrestrial UK broadcaster) - more former pupils made statements to the police about alleged abuse at Caldicott. This included further complaints against Peter Wright and other former teachers including Hugh Henry, the man unnamed in the documentary who abused Mark Payge. Hugh Henry and Peter Wright were subsequently charged on the same indictment. Henry pleaded guilty on 11/05/12 to 10 indictments against 9 complainants from two schools. He was released on bail to await sentence pending the outcome of the trial of Peter Wright. Media reporting restrictions applied throughout all the trials. David Keith Geddes, another teacher at Caldicott, went to trial on 14/01/13 charged with 5 indictments - it resulted in a hung Jury and a retrial on 11/03/13 again on 5 indictments. He was acquitted. John Addrison, a former pupil of Caldicott who returned as a gap year teaching assistant, went on trial on 11/09/13 - He pleaded guilty to 13 indictments against 5 boys from two schools including Caldicott. Peter Wright returned to court on 1/05/13 charged with 13 indictments against 5 new complainants. It delivered a hung Jury and Wright returned for court for retrial on 13/11/13 on 12 indictments. By unanimous verdict he was found guilty of all counts on 6/12/13. The five men whose cases were stayed in 2003 were witnesses of bad character. Reporting restrictions were finally lifted. Mark Payge had meanwhile developed cancer from which he died on 22/5/13. For sometime Tom was unable to speak to his friend because of the legal process, particularly as Hugh Henry was on the same indictment as Wright. Not until the very end was permission granted. With Mark having returned home, and in a heavily medicated state Tom greeted him - 'hello big boy, that bad smell Tom Perry is back in your life.' The briefest of smiles appeared on Mark’s face, everybody saw it. Two days later, Mark died. Both Wright and Henry were due to be sentenced on the 6/1/14 however on 4/1/14 Henry stood in front of a train close to the Court and was killed http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/paedophile-hugh-henry-killed-train-3115240 So even had Mark lived he would never have seen Henry sentenced. . What is REFORM SCHOOL? What does REFORM SCHOOL mean? REFORM SCHOOL meaning - REFORM SCHOOL definition - REFORM SCHOOL explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. In the United States, a reform school was a penal institution, generally for teenagers. In the United Kingdom and its colonies the term "Industrial School" and later "Borstal" referred to reform schools. Separate schools accommodated delinquent girls or boys. Social reformers in America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries almost invariably found fault with the then-usual practice of treating juvenile offenders essentially the same as adult criminals. It was recognized that the juveniles were often sexually and otherwise exploited by the older inmates and that they were often receiving instruction in more advanced and serious ways of crime by hardened criminals with little regard for law, society's morals, or even human life. As a result, rather than their sentences serving as a deterrent to future crimes, many juvenile offenders emerged from incarceration far worse than when they were first sentenced. The reforms, which were adopted far more readily in some states than others, consisted of a two-pronged approach: a separate juvenile code and juvenile courts for offenders who had not reached the age of majority, and the building of separate institutions for juvenile "delinquents" (the stigmatizing term "criminal" not being used). Because the primary purpose of these institutions was to be rehabilitative rather than punitive, they were styled "reform schools". For the most part, these institutions were custodial. In the 1950s and 1960s, many of the same problems that had occurred with the former system of incarcerating juveniles along with adults began to be noticed in reform school—older juveniles exploiting the younger ones, sexually and otherwise, and the younger ones taking the more hardened, usually older offenders as role models and mentors. Also, the term "reform school" itself, originally intended as destigmatizing, had developed its own stigma, much as the way "welfare payments" were intended to be the destigmatizing corrective term for "relief" or "the dole", but developed a stigma of its own. Today, no state openly or officially refers to its juvenile correctional institutions as "reform schools", although such institutions still exist. The attempt has also been made to reduce the population of such institutions to the maximum extent possible, and to leave all but the most incorrigible youths in a home setting. Also, in an attempt to make the situation more socially normal, and in response to the rising number of young female offenders, many such institutions have been made coeducational. The current approach involves minimizing the use of custodial institutions and the maximization of the use of less-restrictive settings which allow the youths to remain in their own homes, usually while attending during the daytime an institution called an alternative school or something similar, which is usually a more-structured version of a public school. There may be court-monitored probation or other restrictions, such as a strict curfew applied to the clientele of the "Department of Youth Services" or whatever the state terms it, than for other youths the same age. In the United States, the most well-known facilities meeting the general criteria for being colloquially labelled "reform schools" include the Lincoln Hills School near Merrill, Wisconsin (mentioned in episodes of the once-popular TV series Picket Fences) and the Preston School of Industry in Ione, California. The first publicly funded reform school in the United States was the State Reform School for Boys in Westborough, Massachusetts. It opened in 1848. In Denmark, continuation high schools continue to be used as reform schools as they are much cheaper than youth detention centers, while the success rates are much the same. Today, there are no national guidelines regarding the severity of the crimes with which the children are charged; nor are there any guidelines in place to assist in the decision to send them to reform school in the first place, since each town or jurisdiction has its own bylaws and budgets. Children charged with making bomb threats end up in such places.

What ever happened to letting "boys be boys?" Take these two cases: In one, a seven-year-old boy was sent home for nibbling a Pop Tart into a gun. In another, a teacher was so alarmed by a picture drawn by a student (of a sword fight), that the boy's parents were summoned in for a conference. In short, boys in America's schools are routinely punished for being active, competitive, and restless. In other words, boys can no longer be boys. Christina Hoff Sommers, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, explains how we can change this. Donate today to PragerU! http://l.prageru.com/2ylo1Yt Joining PragerU is free! Boys tend to be disorganized and restless. Some have even been known to be noisy and hard to manage. Sound like any boy you know? But increasingly, our schools have little patience for what only a couple of decades ago would have been described as “boyishness.” As psychologist Michael Thompson has aptly observed: “Girls behavior is the gold standard in schools. Boys are treated like defective girls.” As a result, these “defective girls” are not faring well academically. Compared with girls, boys earn lower grades, win fewer honors they’re are far less likely to go to college. Boys are languishing academically, while girls are prospering. In an ever more knowledge-based economy, this is not a recipe for a successful society. We need to start thinking about how we can make our grade school classrooms more boy-friendly. Well, here are four reforms that would make a very good start. 1. Turn boys into readers. In all age groups, across all ethnic lines, boys score lower than girls on national reading tests. Good reading skills -- need I say? -- are critical to academic and workplace success. A major study in the UK discovered, not surprisingly, that girls prefer fiction, magazines, and poetry while boys prefer comics and non-fiction. Boys whose eyes glaze over if forced to read Little House on the Prairie may be riveted by the Guinness Book of Records. Boys will read if given materials that interest them. If you’re looking for suggestions for books that have proved irresistible to boys go to guysread.com. 2. Inspire the male imagination. Celebrated writing instructor Ralph Fletcher contends that too many teachers take what is called “the confessional poet” as the classroom ideal. Personal narratives full of emotions and self-disclosure -- these are stories girls commonly write -- and these are prized; whereas action stories describing, say, a skateboard competition or a monster devouring a city, these are not. I recently read about a third-grader in Southern California named Justin who loved science-fiction, pirates, and battles. An alarmed teacher summoned his parents to school to discuss the picture the 8-year-old had drawn of a sword fight -- which included several decapitated heads. The teacher expressed grave “concern” about Justin’s “values.” The boy’s father was astonished, not by his son’s drawing which to him was typical boy stuff, but by the teacher’s overwrought -- and female-centered -- reaction. If boys are constantly subject to disapproval for their interests and enthusiasms they are likely to become disengaged and lag further behind. Our schools need to work with, not against, the kinetic imaginations of boys. For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/war-boys

In post-Soviet Russia, troubled underage boys caught at various offenses (from stealing to multiple murder) are committed for a few years to closed state reform schools. There, they live in a military type of regime, starting the day with open air exercises, making beds to absurdly meticulous rules etcetera. Ironically, many come from such poor and/or abusive, often broken families that a structured life with three square meals, a warm dorm and regular classes feels like a better deal, some actually dread returning home
