This beautiful hymn is well-known to those who live on or by the sea; and particularly those who serve on ships or lifeboats. A tribute to those who served and died at sea, including Emmanuel Leonard, my late great-uncle from Plymouth, Devon, and of the Royal Navy. NOTE: I apologise for the typo concerning the composer of this hymn. It's John Bacchus Dykes (not Sykes). These are the original lyrics: Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea! O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard And hushed their raging at Thy word, Who walkedst on the foaming deep, And calm amidst its rage didst sleep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea! Most Holy Spirit! Who didst brood Upon the chaos dark and rude, And bid its angry tumult cease, And give, for wild confusion, peace; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea! O Trinity of love and power! Our brethren's shield in danger's hour; From rock and tempest, fire and foe, Protect them wheresoe'er they go; Thus evermore shall rise to Thee Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

How did early Sailors navigate the Oceans? | The Curious Engineer
Do you know how the early sailors navigate the oceans? The technology today makes it real easy to navigate the oceans. But it's very interesting to know how the early sailors managed to navigate without it. There's a lot of history on it. I tried my best to compile some important and interesting parts of it into this video. Most MYSTERIOUS Abandoned Ships!

The Ourang Medan In 1947 (or, 1948, according to some accounts), a disturbing distress call was picked up by two American ships at British, and Dutch listening posts in the Strait of Malacca. The message said, “All officers including captain are lying in chartroom and bridge. Possibly whole crew.” This was followed by a burst of indecipherable Morse code, then a final, grim message The men at the listening posts triangulated the message and determined it came from a Dutch freighter vessel called the Ourang Medan. A conscripted American vessel named the Silver Star was dispatched on a rescue mission. The rescuers entered a living nightmare. After hailing the Ourang Medan and receiving no reply, they boarded the vessel. Corpses littered the decks, all of them with the same terrified expression and their arms reaching out as if grappling with an unseen assailant. Even the ship’s dog was, its mouth curled in a snarl. As they investigated, finding even more corpses in the boiler room, the rescuers made a strange observation. Despite it being over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the air in the lowest part of the hold was extremely cold. None of the sailors could explain the phenomenon. They also couldn’t find any damage done to the ship itself. The crew of the Silver Star decided to tow the Ourang Medan back to port. However, as soon as they finished fastening the tow line, they saw smoke boiling up from the lower decks, specifically from the Number 4 hold. The boarding party barely had time to cut the tow line and return to the Silver Star before an explosion ripped through the vessel. The explosion was so strong, it actually lifted the ship out of the water before it disappeared below the waters of the Strait of Malacca. One theory as to what happened on the Ourang Medan is that it carried some form of nerve gas that escaped, everyone and causing the explosion. It doesn’t account for the strange cold down below, however. At any rate, we will probably never know for sure what happened. 9. The Carroll A. Deering In August 1920, the Carroll A. Deering set sail from Norfolk, Virginia with an experienced captain and a crew of 10 men bound for Rio de Janeiro with a cargo of coal. Its original captain, William H. Merritt, fell ill shortly after departure and was replaced by Captain W. B. Wormell. Despite this sudden change, the ship delivered its cargo on schedule and set sail to return in December. So far so good! Captain Jacobson aboard the Cape Lookout Lightship in North Carolina sighted the vessel bound for its home port on January 29, 1921. The Carroll A. Deering hailed the lightship and reported that the ship had lost its anchors. Captain Jacobson took note, but couldn’t report it because his radio was out. He later described the crew of the Carroll A. Deering "milling around" suspiciously on the fore deck of the ship. Two days later, the schooner was seen stuck on Diamond Shoals, a treacherous stretch of water. Rough waters kept anyone from reaching the wreck until February 4, when rescuers discovered the Carroll A. Deering to be abandoned. Two lifeboats, personal belongings, key navigational equipment, some papers, and the ship’s anchors were also missing. Despite an investigation by the fledgling FBI, no trace of the crew or the ship’s logs were ever recovered. 8. The Octavius In 1761, a ship named The Octavius departed London loaded with cargo bound for China. It reached its destination and took on another load for the return trip. By then, it was 1762. The captain decided to take advantage of unusually warm weather and risk an attempt through the Northwest Passage. Even though no one had been able to navigate it successfully yet. No one saw the Octavius for thirteen years and people assumed it succumbed to the Arctic. On October 11, 1775 the whaling ship The Herald, while working in waters west of Greenland, spotted a ship drifting along. They boarded her only to find the entire crew below decks frozen solid. The captain sat at his desk in his cabin, frozen stiff with pen in hand apparently in the middle of a log entry. The ship was The Octavius. According to the last log entry, dated 1762, the captain’s chance at conquering the Northwest Passage had failed and the ship was locked in ice. Lost In The Sea - Ep. 207
After working on my boat for 3 months it was time to take it on a 7 day cruise around Espiritu Santo Island just outside of La paz. My motor broke due to a major oil leak about a half hour into the trip so we decided to just keep going without it. It was truly amazing. The water was crystal clear, Destiny sailed like a dream and we had one hell of a time even after pretty much everything I fixed broke haha. It took us 3 days to go 15 miles back into La Paz because the southerly winds were pushing us out and we had to point strait south to get back into the channel. The water tanks broke, the inverter went down, the diesel didn't want to run, the toilet broke and we got away with some minor gear breakage. But it was all good but the weird thing was that after I got back to my mooring the toilet started working again. I bet ol Hubert was messing with us. ;) I have now put Destiny up on the hard to give Destiny the love that she deserves in La Paz. But that will have to wait for a season because I was offered an amazing opportunity to head over to Louisiana to help sail a 35ft sloop through the Bahamas, the Caribbean, the BVI's down to Panama. So stay tuned for Season 3 as my adventure continues down the other side through the islands to the Panama Canal. If you like the video's become a Patron! Most Mysterious Abandoned Ships
From the MV Lyubov Orlova to Teignmouth Electron here are Most Mysterious Abandoned Ships . Would you sail to these destinations to check out and adventure through these abandoned places? 3 - Carrol A Deering This 5 mast schooner was built in 1911, yet sailed her final voyage only a few years later in December of 1920. When the cargo vessel filled up with coal and set sail from Brazil towards Virginia, no one knew the crew would never be seen again. In January of 1921, the ship was spotted by a lighthouse keeper, a crew member on the foredeck informed the keeper that the Deering had lost her anchors, but due to a malfunctioning radio, this message was never sent. Three days later the ship was found aground on Diamond Shoals off the coast of North Carolina. The Deering had been completely abandoned, the logs, navigation equipment and two lifeboats were missing. The kitchen appeared frozen in time, midway into preparation for the next day's meal. The US government launched an investigation but came up with nothing. Diamond Shoals is very close to Bermuda, the ship would have had to pass through the Bermuda Triangle to end up in this desolate location, causing many to speculate that some paranormal may have taken place which led to the abandonment of the Carrol A Deering. 2 - Teignmouth Electron This sailboat hit the waters in 1968, when its captain, the British businessman Donald Crowhurst attempted to win the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, the world's first ever solo round-the -world yacht race. Donald lacked experience and began having troubles within days of starting the race. Donald pulled the ship off to rest along the coast of South America and began falsifying his records, making up chart positions for where he would have been had he been in first place in the race. Donald's intention was to re-enter the race after all the other boats had gone all the way around the world and scoop up first place for himself. He kept one logbook detailing his thoughts and the other was meant to be opened once he won the prize to ensure credibility. After 243 days at sea and providing month's worth of fake records sent in to the race organisers, a message informed him that nearly everyone else had dropped out of the race and he was a shoe-in to win, however, by then his mental state had declined dramatically. Later that year, the Teignmouth Electron was found in a state of disarray, abandoned and adrift. The detailed log books outlined Donald's deceit, as well as ramblings which detailed his derailment into insanity, including instructions on attaining transcendence. Donald's body was never recovered. Leaving many to wonder, did the troubled man take his own life, or could something else have happened to him out there, along on those cold waters. 1 - Mary Celeste On December 13th in 1872, this small two-masted sailing vessel entered the New York Harbor, she had a cargo of over 1700 barrels of Alcohol. But, it became apparent quickly that something was very wrong with the ship, the boat moved irrationally, despite the captain being known for his talent as a seaman. After two hours of attempted hails with no reply, the boat was surrounded and boarded. The out of control ship was found to be abandoned, all of the ship's papers were missing except the captain's log, with the last entry being dated as November 25th, stating the ship had passed the Azores. There were no signs of violence or struggle, though it was noted several times that the ship appeared to have been vacated in a substantial hurry. A six-month supply of food and fresh water was found stored in below decks. All of the crew's personal possessions as well as the cargo of the ship appeared untouched, after further investigation, 9 barrels of alcohol were found empty. Over the next 13 years, the Mary Celeste changed hands 17 times, with several tragic deaths, leading many to whisper that this ship was cursed. No one ever heard from the original crew again.

SIGN UP FOR OUR COURSE: http://findingparadise.ca FOLLOW US: Ash Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ashstobbart/ Ben Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/captainbenb/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingnahoa/ We are now in the most Eastern group of Fiji and have found a completely uninhabited island. Well, actually its not an island, we are officially at a reef, but the sandbank is always there, so I proclaim it an island. This is such a cool place. A place of life and death. We were not there in time to witness life. But death equally held awe and beauty. Duff reef is a turtle breeding island. It is rarely visited and therefore essentially protected by its own location. We were moved to have the privilege to visit this little spot on our planet. A place like this has to have a catch right? And it did. The anchorage was not a very hospitable. We didn’t doddle for days. One night was unfortunately enough. Enough in the sense we should have installed seatbelts to keep us in bed. Monster side swell kept us airborne most of the time. Quickly we were off to the next island group. Welcome Fulanga! At the very south east of Fiji it is upwind from everywhere. We were so thrilled to have the weather and the time to visit there with Ashley's Mom. Fulanga is special place. A welcoming place. A place of shy and wide smiles. Of beautiful people who set themselves apart by adopting the cruisers that dare to venture there. Tui and his sister, Koro, adopted us and allowed us a few special moments with their family. You will have to stay tuned for the next episode as we really immerse ourselves in the village. We are slowly making our way deeper and deeper into the South Pacific. It’s a far cry from New Zealand and although we love them both, we sometimes feel we are on borrowed time. Perhaps it is we are between periods of our lives. Perhaps it is we are just passing through this part of the world. Our constant is our home, Nahoa. Three years out cruising and we are lost. We know exactly where we are, but we are unsure of our future and even our next destination as plans are changing constantly. And so life goes. Even in paradise there are ups. Amazing inspirational days and downs. When you have doubt. When you don't know your next purpose. I suppose we are human after all. But suffice it to say we aren’t ready for this crazy journey to end anytime soon. So not to worry, we will continue to see what this entire world has to offer…. wherever that may lead us on this beautiful journey aboard NAHOA.

Scary Sail. Adventures. of an old Seadog, ep71
In this episode, I prepare for a tropical storm with my friends from Ran, have a nasty sail to Curacao and eat a really really hot curry!! The second part of this video has some raw footage of sailing in some sloppy weather with 35 knots of wind. Enjoy. Thank you for watching this episode of Adventures of an old Seadog, I hope you enjoyed it. Please give us a thumbs up. On Facebook our page is ‘Adventures of an old Seadog’ and there you can find ‘realtime’ up-dates and news that you are welcome to share with your friends. All of the ‘Seadog’ videos are available to watch on the ‘Barry Perrins’ channel on Youtube. For notifications on new releases please subscribe. Now on Patreon. Im pleased to announce we are now on Patreon. Please checkout our page on the link below. https://www.patreon.com/Adventuresofanoldseadog Thanks so much for your support, The adventure continues. Safe sailing. Twitter https://twitter.com/barryperrins Facebook https://www.facebook.com/adventuresofanoldseadog/ Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Shark Attack: Lost at Sea (Music video)
So many people are lost at sea, they sail away and never come back. I'm lucky, I was on a huge oil tanker that exploded (in peacetime), but I survived and came back to my beloved ones. This video is a tribute to all the sailors that didn't return and to the sailors all over the world that are forever resting in the dark deep ocean. Music by Dag Hoiland/Shark Attack

Here's a demo of an instrumental piece I created a little while back, I really like the mellowness of this tune and have a lot of fun playing it :) I imagine a sailor lost at sea trying to find his way home but feeling utter despair and wanting to give up. The metronome can be quietly heard in the background but the demo still sounds pretty nice :) I really hope you enjoy! I used my telecaster for this one (72 thinline) and recorded it on my Zoom r16 :) Find me at: Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/mattbroadbentmusic Twitch channel - (Watch me play live!): https://www.twitch.tv/thelastbaron6000 Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/mattbroadbentmusic Bandcamp: https://mattbroadbent.bandcamp.com/releases

Here one minute and gone the next in the blink of an eye. Despite this however, from time to time people can show a resilience when facing dire circumstances that is nothing short of extrodianry. These are the 5 most amazing wilderness & Ocean survival stories. 5. Yossi Ghinsberg It started as a promising adventure. Yossi Ghinsberg's dream was to hike into uncharted areas of the Amazon rainforest, the thought of discovering places that may never had been seen by man, was something he thought would be spectactular. In 1981 at the age of 21 - After serving in the Israeli Navy, he heading out to South America to make his dream become a reality. Along the way, he met some new friends, Marcus Stamm from Switzerland; Kevin Gale, an American photographer; and Karl Ruprechter, an Austrian who claimed to be a geologist in search of an indigenous tribe and that he knew how to get them into the jungle. Despite hardly knowing each other, the four set out on foot for the remote heart of the Amazon jungle. 4. Debbie Kiley It was October 1982; Debbie Kiley was a 26-year old sailor who went out to sail with four other friends on a routine trip from Maine to Florida. From the onset, Debbie noticed there was something wrong. The skipper was lazy, two men on the boat kept bickering and the boat, a 58-foot sailing yacht called the Trashman wasn't properly maintained. They made a stopover in Annapolis, Maryland and It was here on their next leg when they were caught in a fierce storm. The boat was tossed in strong 60-knot winds and huge 40-50 feet swells. They barely had time to let the coast guard know they were having trouble let alone inflate a life raft when the yacht sank in open waters. For the next five days, the five survivors clung onto a dinghy and one by one, they succumbed to their deaths. 3. Joe Simpson & Simon Yates For Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, the mountains were home. The two young friends were in Peru in 1985, climbing the remote Siula Grande. Simpson was 25 years old and Yates was 21 at that time. The two reached the summit two days after leaving base camp. But they say getting up is always easier then coming down. The next day while decending, Simpson slipped and fell. The impact was so severe he immediately knew he broke his leg and by then he thought he was as good as dead. Being a climber, he knew it would be near impossible to find help and be rescued up in the mountains. Simpson would say that Yates should have left him but instead he tried to help him go down the mountain. 2. Jan Baalsrud Part of the Norwegian resistance, Jan Baalsrud was trained by the British in Special Operations, to assist in helping free his country. On March 24, 1943, Jan, with 10 other comrades, sailed aboard a 75-foot fishing vessel named the Brattholm on a mission to destroy a German air control tower. The group was given the name of a storeowner to contact but what they didn't know was that their real contact had died and the replacement was someone whose sympathies were with the Germans. Soon after landing, the Germans ambushed the Brattholm. The ship was filled with explosives for the mission and since their cover was blown, the men decided to detonate the explosives hoping to buy some time for them to escape. 1. Jose Salvador Alvarenga Jose Alvarenga was a fisherman last seen sailing with another fisherman named Ezequiel Cordoba on November 18, 2012. Jose had meant to go with his usual partner, out off the coast of Mexico, but he cancelled at the last minute. Aboard the 25-foot boat, the men managed to capture their fill of fish, but that’s when their luck ran out. After being hit by a storm, they were blown off course. Jose radioed for help just before all electronics stopped functioning - soon after that their engine died as well. As the storm grew stronger, they were forced to dump their catch in desperate attempt to stabilize the boat. The boat was tossed around while the two men took turns frantically bailing water. so there were the 5 Most Amazing Wilderness & Ocean Survival Stories Surviving the elements takes grit, strength and a lot of luck. But more then any of those, as these men and women have shown, it takes a determination and a will to push on, no matter how dire the situation may seem.
