When it comes time to introduce that product or service to new prospects, they drone on about the offering, focusing on all the great benefits and awesome features it has. And while they’re doing that, their prospects are thinking: “I don’t care. I don't care what your offering does. All I care about is solving my challenges, and improving my life." To avoid this massive pitfall in your go-to-market strategy, take a step back from the actual offering and start to map out exactly what that offering does for clients. Go-To-Market Strategy Tip #2: Map out your outreach strategy. So many organizations are haphazard about their outreach strategy. But the best go-to-market strategy requires that you map out what the entire outreach process looks like, from start to finish. When are we making calls? When are we leaving voicemails? When are we sending emails? What do those emails look like? What do they say? When are we sending a package? What are we doing for advertising? And how does this all fit together? Go-To-Market Strategy Tip #3: Get very clear on who does what. It's so easy to say, "OK, sales team, this is all you! You have to start contacting people and just go for it." But again, we need a clear plan. Oftentimes that plan requires many different hands on deck to make sure the whole process comes together. Of course you have the marketing folks who are focused on the marketing piece of your go-to-market strategy. But how do your different salespeople fit within the strategy? Maybe some salespeople are focused solely on outbound emailing to cold prospects. Go-To-Market Strategy Tip #4: Execute with consistency.There is a tendency with go-to-market strategies to try to get everything done in a couple of days. And quite frankly, that's just silly. Because all that’s going to do is either lead to burnout or a really sloppy go-to-market strategy. Instead, executive with consistency. Lay out the metrics you want to prioritize, and set expectations over the period of a couple months. Then, you can focus on accomplishing those key activities on a consistent basis. Go-To-Market Strategy Tip #5: Assess how it's going — and tweak.This is really underappreciated. Sometimes we get into a flow and start doing something and it's kind of working, so we just stick with it. We never look back. But the most effective go-to-market strategies are dynamic. You should be testing a lot of different things, because by definition a go-to-market strategy is new, and we don't know exactly what's going to work. Ultimately, you can see that your go-to-market strategy is a process that continues to repeat over and over again, as you assess what's working and then continue tweaking. So, there you have it. In this video, I’m going to share five insanely simple ideas about how to increase sales. Check it out: 1. Toss out the features and benefits. Your prospects are sick of hearing all about your products and services. Instead, simply focus on the results you achieve, as this is what your prospects actually care about. 2. Ask for one referral each day. Now I know that may sound like a lot of work, but realistically it’s no more than 10 minutes of work each day. Plus, there is no easier way to grow your sales. Just think about the math: Asking for one referral or introduction each day means five per week; that’s 250 introduction-asks per year! 3. Host a private client event. People love to come to exclusive events. Invite both your top clients and some of your top prospects. You’ll see that your top prospects will actually end up doing your selling for you. 4. Create client case studies. There’s nothing—and I mean nothing—more compelling to a prospect than an example of your past success. Develop case studies that focus on results you’ve created with your clients—not so much on the deliverables, but on what you actually accomplished. 5. Use a proposal with three options. Stop proposing just one option. This is the reason that you’re getting shopped around on price and limiting the possible size of a sale. Your prospects want options, so use proposals with three of them, ranging from a low-end, least expensive option, all the way up to the premium option with massive added value. By doing this, you’ll give your prospects the perspective to see what’s out there, and you’ll also give them the opportunity to choose the highest-end option with the most value—and that means the biggest sale for you. Okay, so I’m gonna be upfront with you. I really don’t read a lot of marketing books. Sure, I devoured all the classics. Still, for the life of me I couldn’t name the latest and greatest marketing and advertising book topping the best-seller list. But you’re a marketing Wizard, you say. How can this be? Oh, no! I’ve been exposed as a fraud. I dunno. Maybe it’s the non-conformist in me. More likely than not, it’s because I want to know the root of an idea’s origins. I want to know WHY something works. So I’ve developed my persuasive prowess by studying neurology, psychology, biology, and the arts. That’s probably how I stumbled upon a little-known research book titled, Diffusion of Innovations by Everette M. Rogers. It’s a book every Marketing Wizard should read. And it definitely ranks as a classic. Yes, when Roger’s speaks of innovations, he’s referring to new products or services being introduced to the marketplace. But, the concepts found in his book provides any Marketing Wizard with a rock-solid blueprint for persuading customers to buy from you—even if what you’re selling has been around longer than Jerry Lewis. Is he still alive? Just look at all the dog-eared pages and highlights I made. Lots of good marketing mojo in this book for sure. Like this: “In developing a favorable or unfavorable attitude toward an innovation, an individual may mentally apply the new idea to his or her present or anticipated future situation before deciding whether or not to try it,” says Rogers. “This vicarious trial involves the ability to think hypothetically and counterfactually and to project into the future: What if I adopt this innovation? Forward planning is involved at the persuasion stage.” Helping your customers to imagine doing the thing that you want them to do. That’s what Rogers is talking about here. And that’s what you’re trying to make happen with your marketing as well. So let’s get knee deep into the five factors that influence the spread of new ideas and lead to widespread adoption: Number One: Relative Advantage - the degree to which an innovation is perceived to be better than the product or service it supersedes. Naturally, the greater the perceived relative advantage of an innovation, the more rapid its rate of adoption will be. Your goal here is to frame the buying conversation to favor you. Since we know that customers naturally contrast and compare the differences among their available options, you must make an apples-to-oranges comparison—rising above the competition to become the obvious choice. Now, logical, reason why marketing is important … but don’t forget to speak to your customer’s emotions. Tap into an emotional benefit that drives your customer’s desire—one that your customer is willing to pay for. Marketing and advertising that speaks to a dominant, driving emotion is much more powerful and persuasive than copy that makes a logical argument alone. Number Two: Compatibility - the degree to which an innovation is perceived to be consistent with existing values, past experiences and the needs of potential adopters. Products and services that are deemed less compatible or incompatible with the norms of a social system will not be adopted as rapidly as those that are. Please don’t expect your customers to adopt a new belief system. You can’t please all. Remember, only weasel brands try’n snuggle up to every customer in the marketplace. So find a group of customers with a social system that your products and services are compatible with. Number Three: Complexity - the degree to which which an innovation is perceived to be difficult to understand and use. Simplicity is a better way to think about this. Marketers have known for awhile now that uncertainty is the costly side-effect of overwhelming your customers with too much choice. Generally speaking, the more options customers have at their fingertips, the more indecisive they’ll become. And complexity often creates the desire for simplicity. This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today. how to write a marketing plan step by step guide + templates. Firms that are successful in marketing invariably start with a marketing plan. Large companies have plans with hundreds of pages; small companies can get by with a half-dozen sheets. Put your marketing plan in a three-ring binder. Refer to it at least quarterly, but better yet monthly. For small companies, this is often the best way to think about marketing. Things change, people leave, markets evolve, customers come and go. Later on we suggest creating a section of your plan that addresses the medium-term future--two to four years down the road. But the bulk of your plan should focus on the coming year. You should allow yourself a couple of months to write the plan, even if it's only a few pages long. Developing the plan is the "heavy lifting" of marketing. While executing the plan has its challenges, deciding what to do and how to do it is marketing's greatest challenge. Most marketing plans kick off with the first of the year or with the opening of your fiscal year if it's different. Who should see your plan? All the players in the company. Firms typically keep their marketing plans very, very private for one of two very different reasons: Either they're too skimpy and management would be embarrassed to have them see the light of day, or they're solid and packed with information . . . which would make them extremely valuable to the competition. You can't do a marketing plan without getting many people involved. No matter what your size, get feedback from all parts of your company: finance, manufacturing, personnel, supply and so on--in addition to marketing itself. This is especially important because it will take all aspects of your company to make your marketing plan work. Your key people can provide realistic input on what's achievable and how your goals can be reached, and they can share any insights they have on any potential, as-yet-unrealized marketing opportunities, adding another dimension to your plan. If you're essentially a one-person management operation, you'll have to wear all your hats at one time--but at least the meetings will be short! What's the relationship between your marketing plan and your business plan or vision statement? Your business plan spells out what your business is about--what you do and don't do, and what your ultimate goals are. It encompasses more than marketing; it can include discussions of locations, staffing, financing, strategic alliances and so on. It includes "the vision thing," the resounding words that spell out the glorious purpose of your company in stirring language. Your business plan is the U.S. Constitution of your business: If you want to do something that's outside the business plan, you need to either change your mind or change the plan. Your company's business plan provides the environment in which your marketing plan must flourish. The two documents must be consistent.

Product cannibalization can destroy your profits, but it can also save your company. Which one it does depends on how you manage it. In simple terms, product cannibalization occurs when a company launches a new product that steals volume, sales revenue, and/or market share from one or more of their existing products. This sounds like bad business, especially if the new product being offered has a lower contribution margin than the existing products. But there are two reasons why launching a cannibalizing product can actually be a good marketing strategy. The first is customer retention. When your company offers a new, enhanced product, it provides customers with more value and keeps them buying your brand, rather than switching to your competitors’ brands as they improve their products and attempt to capture your market share. The second reason is new customer acquisition. A new product developed for a new target market may cannibalize current customers from a seemingly distinct market. Even at a lower margin, if enough new customers buy your brand, the losses from cannibalization are overcome by the gains in building a larger customer base. After two failed companies I decided to fix that. My solution? Driving around nights & weekends in my silver, 94’ Volkswagen Jetta listening to every sales audio book I could get my hands-on. Some nights, I had Ziglar riding shotgun. On other nights, it was Carnegie, Tracy or Hill. And after dozens of books, I’ve distilled it down to 3 key areas: 1) Connect & Qualify 2) Needs Assessment + Close 3) Follow Up I actually made a HUGE mistake calling this “101 stuff” because there’s nothing basic about it. Without the time I invested, and the thousands of hours of selling under my belt it would’ve been hard to see the pattern. Over the years, I’ve taught this to hundreds of people and they’ve gone on to close new deals in less than 30 minutes. Nothing pumped me up more than to hear someone take a call and walk away with an order. In this week’s video I break it down so that anyone can do this and get the same results. One of the most important skills you can learn is to communicate with someone else, and quickly assess if you can help them. To do that requires great questions. So, what do you ask to get to a customer's challenges or issues? What do you ask to help move the sale forward?
