Nori is the Japanese name for a type of seaweed from the genus Porphyra that grows wild, like other sea vegetables, off of rocks along shallow coastal shorelines, mainly in the Pacific Ocean as well as the North Atlantic and Irish Sea. Used as whole laver pieces or in the form of sheets, it has been consumed for centuries as a valuable food source in both Japan and Wales. A nutritious sea vegetable, containing many phytonutrients, like minerals and polysaccharides, it is most famous for its use in the popular Japanese food known as sushi. http://www.euronews.com/ It's a bright sunny day off the south-west coast of Ireland. A team of local marine researchers have taken their boat out to check on their seaweed farm. The algae they planted just a few months ago has already grown into an impressive underwater plantation. "You can see quite clearly - there's quite a large crop of seaweed down here. The plants are somewhere between two and three meters long, so at this stage we're very close to harvesting," says marine biologist Freddie O'Mahony. Seaweed farming is a growing business in Ireland. Demand for seaweed is increasing in sectors like healthcare and food. The team is working on Mabfuel, an innovative European research project to study algae as a potential biofuel crop. "Seaweed doesn't require any fertilizer, there's no space requirements either, like you would have with terrestrial crops - there's a lot of competition with terrestrial crops for food. And it grows very fast - it's fully grown in six months," says Julie Maguire, Mabfuel project coordinator. Some species of algae contain sugars that can be used to produce bioethanol. Others are rich in oil that can be converted into biodiesel. Researchers are trying to make such fuels commercially viable by improving the algae growth and oil content. Along with seaweed, they're also studying micro-algae - a species that grows and accumulates oil quickly when cultivated in bioreactors. "It would produce between 7 and 31 times more oil than the best terrestrial crop. That's what all the studies have shown. OK, there's a lot more to do, but you know, ten years ago people would have laughed at you if you had proposed to put seaweed-based oil in your car," says Julie Maguire. The biggest challenge is extracting the oil trapped in the seaweed and micro-algae cells. Researchers treat the algae powder with large amounts of solvents to increase the release of oil, but this method isn't efficient on a large scale. "Growing the algae is obviously the easy part - whether it's macro-algae or micro-algae that you're culturing, it's quite simple to grow. The hard part is extracting the oil from the actual algea. We need to look at the cheapest way to do it, using the least amount of resources," says micro-algae researcher Fiona Moejes. A cheaper oil made of seaweed could revolutionise the emerging biofuel industry. Green Biofuels Ireland produces 30.000 tonnes of biofuel each year by recycling used cooking oil, animal fats and other kinds of fats. The biofuel is blended with mineral diesel, making it more environmentally-friendly. Researchers are testing algae oil samples with industrial grade tools. For biofuel manufacturers, developing a new product at a competitive price would help them expand production. "Of course, our industry is always interested in this new oil. Because we can convert any type of oil in this process to make biodiesel. And the greener it is, the better it is for ourselves," says Joe Jewison, laboratory manager at Green Biofuels Ireland. Algae grows almost anywhere, as long as it gets enough sunlight, water and carbon dioxide. It improves air quality by absorbing CO2 and reduces the negative effects of fish farming by filtering out excess nutrients that pollute waters in fisheries. "The only environmental impact you have on seaweed farm is beneficial. It's all positive. There's nothing negative about a seaweed farm. I'm not saying that they will clean up the sea completely, but they do help to clean up the excess nutrients in the sea. So I like to see the seaweed as a sort of a mop. A nutrient mop," says Freddie O'Mahony. "I'm chewing it. It's quite tasty. Would you like to try some?", she adds with a smile. Visit the link above for recipe information, ingredients, and additional video recipes. Join our FREE Recipe Exchange and swap recipes with other cooks who love cookin'! Don't you love cooking fresh and delicious meals? http://creativecookingcorner.com/pages/freerecipe.htm Ingredients bunch kale seaweed large clove roasted garlic ginger, minced soy sauce pimentos (roasted red pepper) sesame oil for pan splash rice wine vinegar toasted sesame seeds Hi! This is Matt with Creative Cooking Corner and today we're going to be making Kale Seaweed Salad. We'll start out with rehydrating our seaweed. I'll show you how to do that. Acadian Garden sent us a sample of their seaweed and we're going to show you how to hydrate that. What you want to do is take a couple of cups of water in a bowl - just room temperature water not hot. I like to add a little rice wine vinegar because the seaweed will pick up whatever flavors you incorporate to it. We'll just take a little handful. That should be plenty. And I don't know if you can see it, it is really beautiful. It is reds, greens, and yellows. And if you have kids, this is pretty cool to watch right here because this stuff grows really fast and it is really cool to watch. It has been about 5 minutes and you can see that the seaweed has grown quite a bit and it is really rather beautiful. There's yellow, green , and this reddish-burgundy color. So just give it a little stir. We'll give it a few more minutes and then we'll continue on with the recipe. So it's been about 8 minutes now, and like I said, you can see that the seaweed is pretty much totally rehydrated. So we will go ahead and strain this and season it. Wipe the bowl out, give the seaweed a little shake, you want all the water off it, be gentle with it. You can see that it is soft and give it a little splash of sesame oil, tablespoon of mince ginger. And just toss that around and get the seasoning spread out. Like I said, I use my fingers because you want to be gentle with it. So the remainder of our recipe we're going to cook on the stovetop. So on my stove, I have it preheated on medium high heat non-stick skillet. Next we're going to add a little more sesame oil. Our kale, which by the way, has been washed and tore into little bite sized pieces. You see them there. Don't worry it, just pack it in there because it is going to wilt down. To this, we're going to add about 2 tablespoons of low sodium soy sauce. And we'll just cover that. Don't worry if it's not all in there. It will definitely shrink down. So it's been just a couple of minutes and I'm going to toss my kale. Toss that around a little bit. It's starting to get soft. You want it kind of like pasta andante. You want it soft, but firm to the bite. You want a little crispiness in there. Our kale is looking perfect. Turn the heat off. And we'll go ahead and dump it in a big bowl. To our kale, I am going to add just a little bit of chili garlic paste. Okay, so my seaweed has been hydrating for about 10 minutes. I'm going to go ahead and strain that. A little shake in the colander get the water off. To this, I'm going to add just a pinch of chopped ginger. Toss that around a little bit. And to keep it from sticking, splash of sesame oil and toss. Okay, here we have our steamed kale. To this, I'm going to add this is roasted garlic, it's not raw, it's roasted in the oven. And I already added my chili paste. These are my homemade pimentos. I do them. You can check on the related recipe. Do a little julienne. I'm going to take that and put it in our bowl with the kale. What we'll do is give this a little toss. You want to make sure you get that garlic and chili paste well incorporated into the kale. And what I might do is add a little bit of rice wine vinegar to this. And now we're going to add our seaweed. Then we will gently toss it. If you got any real big pieces, like here is a really big piece, we'll just tear that up a little big. Finish it off, we have some toasted sesame seeds. Put in a nice amount because they add a really nice little crunch. Toss and there you have it - Kale Seaweed Salad! Go ahead and plate some up and you can garnish it with a little bit more of the sesame seeds. And you can serve this at the table with extra rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, or sesame oil. And they can adjust the seasonings as they prefer. Alright, well, this is Matt with Creative Cooking Corner. Discover Green Caviar also known as Sea Grapes, Umibudo or Seaweed Pearls are now available on https://seagrapes24.com Sea grapes, also known as Umibudo, is a tropical aquatic vegetable that is very popular in Japan where it is considered a delicacy. It is highly regarded for its succulent appearance, refreshing taste and pleasing “pop” when you eat it. The sea grapes seem to almost explode in the mouth releasing a unique flavor of the sea! In search of other secrets of nature, we have found in Japan: Green caviar! Sea water plants with the highest nutrient density from the genus of Caulerpa Lentillifera algae, a natural seaweed – alga, which is cultivated, cultivated and processed in Japan. Each bag ordered contains 3.5oz/100g dehydrated Umibudo algae which yields about 500g/1 pound of fresh sea grapes once soaked. This kind of seaweed can reach up to 5 meters in length but only the extremities including the so called “sea grapes” are consumed. Here in Okinawa, Japan we harvest our sea grapes where they have been enjoyed for eons. Sea grapes are usually eaten raw with vinegar, as a snack or in a salad. You can enjoy them raw with soy sauce or rice vinegar mixed with mustard. Due to their exceptional surface, these aquatic plants can absorb valuable nutrients such as amino acids, mineral salts, trace elements, vitamins, polyphenols and flavonoids from the seawater and – in comparison to terrestrial plants – store up to 1000 times higher concentration. In Japan, this alga is a delicacy and makes for a fantastic decoration. The sea pearls/sea grapes are eaten fresh, dressed as a salad or simply as a snack in between. They slightly taste like seaweed and have a consistency like real caviar, a crisp freshness kick when eating the natural sea grapes is guaranteed.

Jakarta food and beverages retailer Ong Tek Tjan sells ice cream in cups his customers can eat afterwards, instead of throwing away - they are made from seaweed and taste like jelly, in flavours from peppermint to green tea. Indonesian start-up Evoware, which makes the cups, as well as other containers, from farmed seaweed free of chemicals, is relying on its biodegradable alternative to plastic packaging to reduce contamination of the environment. "I too support this environment-friendly cause," said vendor Ong, who uses Evoware's Ello Jello container to serve ice cream, though he feels consumers may take time to adapt to the product that is pricier than current options. Indonesia, which has some of the world's filthiest rivers and once-pristine beaches littered with plastic waste, has joined a United Nations-led clean-up drive after being rated the second-biggest plastic marine polluter, behind China. From the first product it developed, the seaweed-based jelly cup, Evoware is expanding into other types of packaging, such as dissolvable sachets for coffee or seasonings. How to make homemade seaweed fertiliser. Seaweed is a freely available organic fertiliser for those of you living close to the ocean. It is rich in potassium, beneficial to plants, encouraging root growth and vigorous health. For those of you who do not have access to fresh seaweed from the ocean you can use dried seaweed from a shop. Remember not to put too much fertiliser on the plants; any fertiliser can damage or kill plants if over-applied. We diluted one cup of fertiliser to 10 liters of water.

Japan has no right to harvest kelp or anything else from the most radioactive place on earth . The Fukushima kelp is used mainly in preserved foods and its boiled down in soy sauce from the same area is over the top evil . http://mdshop.us/SeaVeggies Marine fish are a beautiful addition to a reef aquarium. They add color, movement and personality to the tank. Just like corals, reef fish need proper nutrition to remain healthy and vibrant. Fish nutrition is not just about boosting growth. Feeding correctly is ensures the long-term health of the fish. Since our aquariums can’t duplicate the diverse array of live foods found in nature, we have to rely on live, frozen and prepared foods. No one type of fish food can provide all the amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients marine fish require. We solve this dilemma by feeding a variety of high-quality foods to cover all the nutritional bases. SeaVeggies are made of 100% natural red, green and purple seaweeds. The seaweed is harvested, dried and cut into bite-sized flakes. Nutritional qualities vary between the algae types but all provide protein, fat and fiber along with essential minerals and trace elements that enhance health, growth and color. We really like how the flakes don’t disintegrate when placed in the aquarium water. This means the nutrients are retained inside the algae until the flakes are eaten by the fish. The SeaVeggie flakes can be fed by hand or used with automatic fish feeders. SeaVeggies are a favorite food of tangs, parrotfish, angelfish, larger butterflyfish. Other fish often find the sea weed tasty too. The only way to know is to experiment and see what your fish like. SeaVeggies are even available as a blend of red, green and purple seaweed flakes. Using a variety of foods ensures your fish are getting the right nutrition. Two Little Fishies SeaVeggies are one type of fish food every saltwater and reef aquarists should have in their cabinet. Intrigued by the lack of information online I set about making my own seaweed sheets at home. This amateur attempt was a lot of fun, I'm hoping this might get the attention of someone with a bit more knowledge than me who might be able to shed some light on how to do it better. I tried it with a paper making deckle with limited success.
