Test Video shot with the AWESOME SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33 x Adapter and SLR Magic 35mmT1.4 Cine Lens, as well as with their Achromatic Diopter set (+0.33 & +1.3) This NEW ANAMORPHIC ADAPTER is a GODSEND for ANAMORPHIC SHOOTERS. The hassles that we were used to with dual focus, minimum focus issues, and all the headaches of shooting with older ANAMORPHIC LENSES are non-existent. Well worth it for ANAMORPHIC SHOOTERS or anyone looking into shooting ANAMORPHIC. SIMPLE TO USE, WELL BUILT, AND GREAT PRICE compared to what it takes to have a functional older anamorphic lens. - Shot onthe Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera - L.C.W. 77mm Fader ND Mark 2 Locations: San Pedro CA. Here’s a quick overview on how you can be shooting anamorphic video with the help of the SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33x-50 adapter. It’s commonplace to see filmmakers digitally cropping their 16:9 footage to create that cinematic widescreen look. One of the drawbacks of doing this is that those cropped sections of the image captured in camera, have now been wasted. So why not shoot anamorphic? It can seem like a daunting task to those filmmakers who have never touched the format before. Since traditionally anamorphic lenses can be relatively expensive, especially if you’re a filmmaker who wants to start working with the format, but doesn’t want to invest in a brand new set of glass. Cue the SLR Magic Anamorphot adapter, adapter being the key word. It simply attaches to the front of your aspherical lens, and increases the field of view by 33% (when using the Anamorphat 1.33x, more so with the 2x version), and records this increased FOV compressed to 16:9. Once you’re in the edit, you simply tell your NLE to interpret this footage as anamorphic, and bingo, you get that widescreen look, without compromising your image resolution. (VIMEO version: https://vimeo.com/90143707) I've been shooting and experimenting with the Century Optics 1.33x adapter for over a year now. While definitely not ideal I was pretty happy just to be shooting anamorphic and combined with the Tokina achromat I could get results that were workable enough for indie filmmaking. When SLR Magic announced they were developing a new anamorphic adapter some critics predicted it would be not much more than a copy of either the Century Optics or LA7200 adapters. They couldn't have been more wrong. For starters, it's virtually impossible to get sharp edges free of chromatic aberration on the Century Optics adapter without sacrificing infinity focus and using diopters. The SLR Magic Anamorphot has very even performance across the frame, free of CA and can be used with bigger stops on longer focal lengths than is possible with the older adapters. In fact, you can use it with stops that are a major challenge for pulling and maintaining focus without a camera assistant if your camera/monitoring combo doesn't offer peaking. The Anamorphot flares easily and has a similar blue-streak look most people associate with Panavision. SLR Magic maintained coating characteristics on their matching diopter set (+1.3 and +.33) so that the cool look of your flares is maintained if you happen to be using them in a close-up situation. The great thing about this adapter though, they're optional rather than compulsory. In this video I alternate taking lenses between my Nikkor 24mm f/2 at stops between f/2.8 and f/4/5.6 and my F.Zuiko 50mm f/1.8 shot mostly at f/2.8 which was impossible on the Century Optics adapter without stacking multiple diopters. Focus is a real challenge at these stops and on a legitimate production I would always have an assistant pulling focus. Anamorphic filmmaking generally requires a 1st AC unless you're using a dual-focus adapter designed for projection which mandates rigorous camera and subject blocking and as little relative movement as possible. Or being really stopped down, and who wants that?

A split focus diopter is an unique way to achieve the illusion of deep focus. The half convex glass attaches in front of the camera's lens to make half the lens nearsighted. Before the digital age of cinema, many directors made frequent use of the split-focus diopter. The split diopter allowed directors to capture two main focal points in just one shot, rather than having to shoot two different angles. I've always noticed split diopter shots in older movies but never really researched how they were done. I got inspired to find out more when I saw this technique used in The Hateful Eight (in glorious 70mm). I re-watched Inglorious Bastards, Django Unchained & Kill Bill Vol I, and was surprised that I couldn't find any split diopter shots. Here is a great little montage of split diopter shots in some well known films. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CbQ-ayDbrU I got my split diopter for 35 dollars on Ebay... Look for "77mm Split Field Two Field Special Effects" (this diopter was equivalent to a +2.0 power in reading glasses) And please comment below and share other split diopter shots used in movies! PS- You may notice that there is a small little crack in my split diopter. That crack happened from the frisbee golf shoot which was the first day I got it. I uploaded 900MB at 1920x1080, but there are still some nasty things going on with the site's compression. Especially the water at the end, you'll have to trust me, the ducks look great. There's another version of this over at the other video site, just search "SLR Magic Rangefinder test" and my name. Still photos may be the only way to pixel peep this lens. Here is a quick test of the new Rangefinder attachment that allows single focusing of anamorphic (or any other) lens. I used the Rangefinder along with the SLR Anamorphot 1.33x and a few prime lenses: 28mm Soligor 2.8, 35mm "Cine II" T1.4, and 50mm X-Fujinon 1.6 on Micro 4/3 sensor. I briefly checked an old 110 Pentax 24mm lens and it also worked with the combined front lenses without any vignette, but the 110 Pentax 18mm clearly saw the vignette. I would like to try a normal size 24mm to see if it would still work with this combination, or if this is a quirk of the 110 series Pentax lenses being physically so small. First Impressions are good. The Rangefinder lens is solidly built and the focus turns smoothly, but that throw is quite far at 240 degrees rotation. Definitely make sure to set your prime lenses to true infinity by testing them on the camera body you'll use. Especially older adapted lenses where the adapter makers aren't necessarily precise. I like to sight a distant mountain or ideally the moon, with the viewfinder magnification cranked up as far as it will go. Get this baseline infinity correct for all the lenses you'll use with any supplemental focus unit. I use a bit of tape on the barrel to add this supplemental 'true' infinity marking. When everything was mounted together, Camera-PrimeLens-Anamorphot-Rangefinder, it was relatively long and heavy, so I ended up rigging a bracket to separately support the Rangefinder and Anamorphot. I didn't use an ND filter, so some sections of this video have very high shutter angles, up to 1/800th sec in the bright sun, which is not always a great look, but I felt it was important to not add more glass for this test. Clarity is quite good, especially closed up at f2.8 and smaller apertures. I included a f1.6 shot in the video at the fountain and it has some dreamyness to it for sure. I tried to include things like cranes, scaffolds, and wires in some shots, since this is a torture test for CA and clarity contrasting the dark structures against the bright sky. Overall the lens performed very well, my biggest gripe was that the long focus rotation made it awkward to get a full focus pull with one grip, so when I use this for something serious I'll think about getting a follow-focus. I'm interested to see how the Rangefinder will do with a 2x Anamorphic, so I hope to get some time to test that coming up.

"In the 70s, directors made frequent use of the split-focus diopter. With this invention it was possible to have one plane in focus in one part of the picture and a different plane in focus in the other half of the picture. This was and still is very useful for the anamorphic widescreen format, which has more depth of field."

First test with the FVD16a single focus. All shot in 4k Cine-D 4:3 50fps 8 bit, some shots with ETC. Taking lens: vivitar/cosina 55mm f2.1 Focal reducer: Lensturbo II Anamorphic lens with FMJ and FVD16a single focus from Rapido Technology Please read before leaving a comment: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I had left the 'IS lock' on while filming by accident and had the wrong IBIS mm due to a calibration I did just before with a different lens set-up. I found out too late sadly. With IS lock mode on and the wrong IBIS the sensor jumps in a jerky motion when you move hence the footage is jerky/jumpy, had to cut out a lot of shots due to this. *Note to self, check your IBIS!* The FVD16a performs wonderful with the anamorphic adapter, the loss in sharpness is negligible, the corner sharpness is exceptional, even with the unavoidable field curvature. The Vivitar/Cosina 55mm f2.1 I used has the worst 'nisen-bokeh' ever (double line bokeh). At f2.1 it glows a bit but not in the good way, had to stop down to f2.8 for most shots. Please note this has nothing to do with the FVD, that performs as good as your taking lens will go. The only positive thing about the cosina is that it remains very contrasty with a strong light source in the frame. It doesn't flare though. But I'll probably never use this lens as a taking again. I'm fresh with Resolve after I migrated from PP so I experimented with different grading settings, still working on a solid workflow since there are flaws. The shots inside garage had an extreme green cast due to very old school fluorescents in the garage. I tried to normalize the hue's but it was a nasty job to correct. Will have to remove it in-cam manually next time. So, bad taking lens, shitty IBIS setting, horrible fluorescents, not the best footage but damn...I love the FVD16a.

Anamorphic test with one of my anamorphic scopes in Cine-D 4k 4:3 50p 8 bit on a sunday during sunset, all shot within 1,5 hour. No real story intended and nothing really planned out. I let friends decide to do whatever they wanted as long as I could shoot, for me it beats shooting trees and branches for testing. Wanted to test the gh5's white balance and find out how it reacts with different street lightning situations and how it would grade in post. Still have trouble dialing correct WB K values by eye on the fly. There's some vignette because of a combination of the temp DIY clamp, lens potrusion and a temp filterholder. Not the most ideal combination, but a temporary solution. Some shots are with a LED but most without. The darkest shots at the end were shot without a LED at 1600 ISO, but could've used 3200 instead, it's a bit underexposed. Stil testing out what works and what doesn't. Trial and error. A very quick and unorthodox test to see how the Tamron +0.5 Close-up lens fairs against the legendary Tokina +0.4 Achromat. A lot of things to consider here - lighting conditions varied, possible focusing issues (the Sankor 16F anamorphic that I have is a pain in the ass double focus lens), but all in all I wanted to see if there is any obvious differences in quality between the two, in a generic shooting scenario. Gear used: Sankor 16F anamorphic lens, Tokina +0.4 Achromat, Tamron +0.5 Close-up, Nikkor-O.C. 35mm f2, Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera.

Just a quick demonstration of how using a moderate power close-up diopter (in this case a Vivitar +1) can not only allow longer focal length taking lenses at wide stops but give the much maligned Century Optics 1.33x anamorphic adapter the oval bokeh anamorphic junkies crave. Normally you would not be able to use a 50mm taking lens at anything more open than f/5.6 without coma and softness. The first part is at f/1.8 and the second at f/2.8 thanks to the diopter helping to correct the limitations of the Century Optics adapter when using large apertures on long focal lengths. This is a cheap, single-element close-up diopter so results will be even better with a doublet/achromat design. Coupling with the Tokina doublet, like I'm doing here (if I don't need infinity focus, I just leave it on), is a half-measure solution but it does make a big difference. Large diameter doublets are just very rare and expensive and don't, generally, come in the +1 power at 72mm and above.

This is a quick video I filmed outside on my mobile so the audio isn't great. I don't recommend extreme modding such as this, but this tutorial is provided so that you can see a suitable process for allowing an anamorphic lens to be locked into place.

This is a really boring test, yielding interesting results :). Anamorphic lenses usually don't focus very close, and most aren't really sharp, or even get fuzzy at apertures wider than f=5.6 or with longer focal length lenses. Diopters not only help focusing closer, but they also improve the overall image sharpness making it possible to use the anamorphic at wider apertures for a narrow dof and with longer focal lengths. This is a sharpness test using a focus through Soligor anamorphot (similar to the Century optics and the Panasonic LA7200). This type of lenses are great for shooting stopped down and with a wide angle lens to get cinemascope deep focus wide shots. But image can get blurry when you want to focus closer, shoot with an 85mm lens or open up the aperture to get shallow dof. By using alternatively, or combining a +0.4 Tokina achromatic doublet and a set of low price diopters +1 and +2 I have been able to get quite sharp focus even wide open. I think this is impressive considering this is not Isco glass! What seems to work best is to use a +1 diopter on top of the +0.4 (the achromat is always desirable to reduce chromatic aberrations), although I find that, on a budget, the +1 alone is not bad on a 50mm lens. I don't have a test chart, so this is only a book shelf and the Sound After by Mind Things. Let me know what you think.

The Camper is now reviewing the SLR Magic Anamorphot 2x lens using a Panasonic GH4 micro four third camera. This is not an in-depth review, but just a quick impression and that's what the camper likes to do best. He also have the Range finder that can be able to pull focus quickly without the need to do double focusing separately on the 50mm lens and on the anamorphot 2x. The Camper also have the SLR Magic Hyper Prime lens T 0.95 and the SLR Magic Achromatic Diopter +1.8 kit. This full Anamorphic lens kit by SLR Magic will make your film look like the high quality movies in theaters by making your video have a dramatic widescreen effect. No need do that cropping bar to fake the widescreen look anymore because the anamorphot 2x will capture all the image and will squeeze it all into your shot. Too bad the camper is not a professional at film making and he is still an amateur at it but will he eventually become good in the future? With only a short amount of available time, this was a quick test of the new SLR Magic Anamorphot Anamorphic 1.33x 50 Lens. I'm not overly happy with how well it pairs with the Nikon 50mm f1.8, I'm going to try it with a Zeiss 58mm and see if it's any better, I suspect it will be. If anybody has had greater success with a different prime lens, let me know. I shot at f2.8, contradictory to landscape shots I know, but it is the f-stop generally recommended by SLR Magic. I'll post a further test with different f-stops and with the diopters with the Zeiss lens fitted at some point in the coming weeks. This was also the first outing for the new SmallHD ac7 Field Monitor. Small tip, you HAVE to use the light hood in sunshine like this, the screen reflects like crazy without it!

Here is some footage from the extremely rare Isco Optic Germany 16:9 Video Attachment I anamorphot. This is a 1.33x focuseable Iscorama, based on the body of the mighty Iscorama 54, though having the so much desired 1.33x anamorphic ratio that yields 2.39:1 cinemascope directly from 16:9 DSLR footage. The operating principle is the same as the Iscoramas: set your taking lens to infinity and focus only with the anamorphic. This enables rack focus and smooth focus pulls. The lens is multicoated and very sharp, even at wide apertures, enabling to shoot anamorphic footage with shallow depth of field, exhibiting the praised oblong bokeh. The large rear element enables you to use it on full frame cameras without vignetting. Rear thread is 77mm, but you can adjust it to the diameter of your taking lens by means of step up rings. Minimum focus distance is 2m as with all Iscoramas, but you can focus closer using low power diopters (front filter thread is 95mm). I have used Series XI schott glass Schneider diopters in this clip. So far, this is the only 1.33x focuseable, sharp anamorphic lens I have ever seen. A great piece of optics produced only in a small batch from the legendary Gottingen company in the 80s. Here it is tested on the Canon 5d Mark III with a 50mm f1.4 Super Takumar and a Helios 40-2 85mm f1.5 taking lenses. Definitely one of the best anamorphic lenses!

Got my hands on this monster anamorphic lens, so I'm just playing around with it here to see what kind of flares I can get. Also, this is 1080p stretched to 4k! These things are so awkward to use! Aside from weighing a ton next to my GH2, you have to focus both lenses to get a sharp image. Annoyingly, the shortest focus distance on this lens is about 4 meters, so I'm hoping to hack a diopter to the front and see if that improves things. Watching it back on a bigger screen after stretching it, I probably didn't quite align it properly, but you can still appreciate the lovely flares. http://www.chrisforshaw.co.uk http://www.facebook.com/manchestervideoproduction

My first shots with my Baby Berthiot Hypergonar 1.75X Anamorphic lens. Shot over three days in May 2015 in North Carolina. I filmed in Chimney Rock Park, Fairview Buncombe County, and outside of Burnsville. Cut to the music of Dances With Wolves by John Barry. I have an alternative cut of this edited to the music of Ravel on Vimeo :) https://vimeo.com/127748070 I shot on a GH4 in 4k with the scenery setting. I used the Baby Hypergonar 1.75x anamorphic lens with a Schneider-Kreuznach 50mm f/1.9 Xenon and a Olympus Zuiko Pen F 38mm F1.8 as my taking lens. Custom Redstan housing for the baby! I used 2 Tokina +0.4 Achromatic diopters and a Narumi +3 diopter for close up shots. I just lowered the mids on a few shots with Colorista 11 in color correction. I love the look and feel of this lens so much! I hope you enjoy it :) Special Thanks: to Seb Farges "Baby Hypergonar oracle" vimeo.com/sebfarges To Alan Doyle at Redstan redstan.com/ To all the contributing filmmakers on EOSHD for there invaluable input.
