The scale and speed of today's software development efforts imposes unprecedented constraints on the pace and quality of decisions made during planning, implementation, and post-release maintenance and support of software. Decisions during the planning process include, level of staffing and development model given the scope of a project and timelines. Tracking progress and course correcting, identifying and mitigating risks are the key in the development phase. As are monitoring aspects of and improving overall customer satisfaction in the maintenance and support phase. Availability of relevant data can greatly increase both the speed as well as likelihood of making a decision that leads to a successful software system. This talk discusses the development and use of Microsoft's Software Analytics Data platform (CODEMINE) for collecting and analyzing engineering process data, its constraints and pivotal organizational and technical choices. We start by describing exemplary uses of CODEMINE, ranging from simple reporting, via calculation and modeling, to predictive analytics, thereby motivating its architecture and schema design. We conclude with key lessons learnt from deploying the platform across product teams at Microsoft.

High-profile software project disasters have been commonplace for decades. Failed projects are followed by hand-wringing and cries of, "Where did we go wrong?" The people involved in the failed projects seem unable to determine the root causes of failure. Post mortem analyses typically settle on conspicuously incorrect answers, such as "We didn't test enough," "We should have been more agile," or "We should have motivated our staff better." The topic of judgment is ignored in the software engineering literature, yet development of sound professional judgment is key to correct and useful diagnoses of past failures and essential to creating future successes. ABSTRACT: Software security defects come in two categories: bugs in the implementation and flaws in the design. In the commercial marketplace, much more attention has been paid to finding and fixing bugs than has been paid to finding and fixing flaws. That is because automatically identifying bugs is a much easier problem than identifying design flaws. The IEEE Center for Secure Design was founded to address this issue head on. My presentation will cover the IEEE CSD’s first deliverable by introducing and discussing how to avoid the top ten software security flaws. The content was developed in concert with Twitter, Google, Cigital, HP, Sadosky Foundation of Argentina, George Washington University, Intel/McAfee, RSA, University of Washington, EMC, Harvard University, and Athens University of Economics and Business. During the talk, I will introduce and discuss how to avoid the top ten software security design flaws. It’s important, of course, to know that these flaws account for half of the defects commonly encountered in software security. But more important still is learning how to avoid these problems when designing a new system or revisiting an existing system. BIO: Gary McGraw is the Vice President Security Technology of Synopsys (SNPS), a silicon valley company headquartered in Mountain View, CA. He is a globally recognized authority on software security and the author of eight best selling books on this topic. His titles include Software Security, Exploiting Software, Building Secure Software, Java Security, Exploiting Online Games, and 6 other books; and he is editor of the Addison-Wesley Software Security series. Dr. McGraw has also written over 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications, authors a periodic security column for SearchSecurity, and is frequently quoted in the press. Besides serving as a strategic counselor for top business and IT executives, Gary is on the Advisory Boards of Max Financial, NTrepid, and Ravenwhite. He currently leads the STAC (Space/Time Analysis for Cybersecurity) and Brandeis programs, and is working on defining new programs. Prior to joining DARPA, he spent four years leading the National Science Foundation’s Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace (SaTC) program. His research interests include voting system security and software assurance. How can crowds be used to accelerate software creation? This is a complex problem, requiring good methods for expert selection, program synthesis and collaboration. We’ll discuss strategies for accelerating software creation using crowds of geographically-diverse communities of software engineers, as well as the cultural and technical challenges that emerge. About the Speaker: Anand is founder of Crowdbotics, a startup using crowdsourcing and machine intelligence to accelerate the process of software development. Crowdbotics brings developers worldwide into a global community of software engineers that collaborate 1-1 with technology companies. Prior to that, Anand was Chief Scientist of LeadGenius, a Y Combinator-backed startup using human computation and deep learning to automate account-based marketing (ABM). Anand has been named as one of Forbes Magazine's "30 under 30" Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under 30. Anand has published in ACM, AAAI and IEEE magazines, journals, and conferences. Anand previously held a National Science Foundation graduate research fellowship in mathematics. Many of today's systems trace their code or design to a 1970 unnamed operating system kernel, implemented in 2489 lines of PDP-7 assembly language. This evolved into the Unix operating system, whose direct descendants include today's BSD systems and intellectual heirs form the various GNU/Linux distributions. How did the architecture of Unix evolve over the past half century? Based on a GitHub repository (https://github.com/dspinellis/unix-history-repo) recording the system's history from 1970 until today, a database recording the evolution of provided facilities, and the reconstruction of the Third and Fourth Edition Unix manuals, we will examine the most significant milestones of this development and the lessons we can learn. Many architectural features, such as layering, system calls, devices as files, an interpreter, and process management, were already visible in the 1970 version. Other ideas followed quickly: the tree directory structure, user contributed code, I/O redirection, the shell as a user program, groups, pipes, and scripting. Later versions added domain-specific languages, environment variables, a documented file system hierarchy, software packages, virtual memory support, optimized screen handling, networking, storage pools, dynamic tracing, and a packet capture library. Based on a record of facilities documented over the years we will see areas in which evolution continues at an unchanged pace and areas where it appears stalled. We will also see how one measure of code complexity has followed a self-correcting path. Lessons we can derive from this amazing ride include the durability of early architectural features, the value of establishing conventions over the imposition of rigid mechanisms, the importance of additions made after the system's gestation, and the increasing difficulty of bringing about ground-breaking changes as Unix ages. Bio Diomidis Spinellis is a Professor of software engineering, the Editor in Chief of the IEEE Software magazine, a programmer, and technology author. Diomidis Spinellis is a Professor in the Department of Management Science and Technology at the Athens University of Economics and Business, Greece. His research interests include software engineering, IT security, and cloud systems engineering. He has written two award-winning, widely-translated books: “Code Reading” and “Code Quality: The Open Source Perspective”. In 2016 he published the book Effective Debugging: 66 Specific Ways to Debug Software and Systems. Diomidis has also published more than 250 technical papers in journals and refereed conference proceedings, which have received more than 5000 citations. He served for a decade as a member of the IEEE Software editorial board, authoring the regular “Tools of the Trade” column. He has contributed code that ships with Apple’s macOS and BSD Unix and is the developer of CScout, UMLGraph, dgsh, and other open-source software packages, libraries, and tools. He holds an MEng in Software Engineering and a PhD in Computer Science, both from Imperial College London. Dr. Spinellis has served as an elected member of the IEEE Computer Society Board of Governors (2013–2015), and is a senior member of the ACM and the IEEE. Recorded: 08/23/2000 CERIAS Security Seminar at Purdue University The Future of Information Security Technologies John Steven Reel, Veridian Information security, and the technologies that provide such security, are a very hot topic throughout the information technology and business communities today. This presentation opens with a consideration of the current network environment. It answers the questions "where are these technologies?" and "where are the gaps in the technologies that are being addressed?" especially as they impact security. Next, the presentation considers the field of network security technologies. It addresses the good, the bad and the undecided aspects of the field today. After setting the stage with this background information, the presentation identifies the most important trends that will impact the network security industry in the coming few years: the federal government finally cares, the vanishing network perimeter, and the opportunity to achieve ubiquitous encryption. Toward the end of the presentation, Dr. Reel presents two "killer" security-related applications. Finally, the presentation closes with a discussion of the major needs in the information security field. Dr. Reel has BS and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science. He spent over 9 years with the National Security Agency developing network-based software for deployment around the world. In 1995, he joined Trident Data Systems (now Veridian Corporation) in their San Antonio operation. For 3.5 years, he worked in an advanced research and development facility dedicated to information security technology development and assessment. Since September 1998, he has been the Chief Technology Officer of Veridian\'s Information Security business unit. In 1998 he and five teammates were awarded a patent on a new technology to protect communications circuits from malicious use. In addition to his dissertation, \"Radiant Object-Oriented Analysis and Design\", he has had one article published by IEEE Software Magazine (Critical Success Factors in Software Projects, May/June 1999). Further, he has given numerous talks and authored many white papers on IA/IO/IW/IP/IS concepts and technologies. Dr. Reel represents Veridian on the External Advisory Board for the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS) at Purdue University. In addition, he serves as an advisor to the Security Panel of the President\'s Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) as well as the Emerging Technology Panel for the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.
