How can banks be used to stop human trafficking? | The Economist

29:21
Human trafficking is devastating for the victims but low-risk for the criminals, whose activities are largely hidden from view. To disrupt it, law enforcement is turning to some unlikely new partners—banks. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.trib.al/rWl91R7 German police raid homes across the country as part of a move to take down an international human trafficking network. It’s the fastest growing crime in the world but sights like this are rare. This is 21st century crime - hard to track, low risk and high reward for the criminal gangs behind it. Today’s biggest criminals could be trafficking humans, drugs or weapons. The authorities charged with stopping them have found some unlikely new partners - banks. @Linden_life Presents: Unchained Fashion Show - End Human Trafficking

04:58
A project I shot and edited for a friend involved in a sex trafficking awareness event held at Linden Life Fellowship. Linden Life's Youth Underground has partnered with the non-profit Unchained and Ohio State University's dance department to present a fashion experience to raise funds and bring awareness to human trafficking. This very powerful, unique show was broken into 3 scenes in which music, poetry, dancing, & fashion embellishes each stage of this tragic epidemic: Innocence, Violation, & Restoration. The show featured a fashion collection designed by Project Runway finalist Korto Momolu. Partners of the show include: -Salvation Army, overseer of CORRC (Central Ohio Rescue and Restore Coalition); -Freedom a la Cart, a local catering service fighting human trafficking by employing survivors of trafficking, and; -The Hope and Liberation Coalition, a new local organization dedicated to creating awareness and preventing human trafficking via the Arts. - Linden Life Fellowship http://www.eventbrite.com/e/linden-life-presents-unchained-fashion-show-tickets-16235160803

How your clothes can prevent human trafficking! | Joana Reiterer | TEDxDonauinsel

11:37
In my perfect world, I would personally sew my clothes, grow my coffee bean and cocoa for chocolate at my backyard. But we rely on people far away to produce this for us. High retailers, wholesalers and/or sales agents margins, overheads, promotion cost, and many more cost limits the actual income earned by the people making these products. What if you went an extra mile to know that person, to be part of their lives, to give their manpower more value and shop directly as possible? Born in southern Nigeria, where a large number of youths live in vulnerable situation and later spending over 10 years counselling victims of human trafficking in Europe, it was very hard for me to ignore the factors that make young people become vulnerable to this crime. With this knowledge, we developed Joadre, to use fashion as a tool to improve the livelihood of vulnerable groups. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

The Hair-Brained Fashion Scheme Making Billions of Dollars

Every year, millions of Hindus shave their heads in offering to the gods. It'’s called tonsuring, and it’'s big business. “"On average we are getting in excess of five tonnes…”," says hair dealer Mayoor Balsara as he finalises his latest purchase from the temples. It’'s a classic globalisation story: the sacrificial hair is cheaply sourced in the developing world, and is lining the pockets of those in the west. David Gold is one of them. Each year his company turns over $150 million selling hair extensions sourced from India’'s temples. He deflects questions of ethics, arguing that the temples pour profits back into local welfare projects. It’'s a dubious claim, and yet many Hindus seem happy for their hair to be spun into gold: "“We gave it to God, and it'’s come back like this. It'’s beautiful.”" ABC Australia – Ref. 4761 Journeyman Pictures is your independent source for the world's most powerful films, exploring the burning issues of today. By knowing what human trafficking is, what signs to look for, and whom to contact for help, everyone can play an important role in identifying and supporting victims. Enjewel's Annual Fashion Show: A New Beginning by Aloysius is a way to bring awareness (while enjoying a world class fashion-musical show) in coastal Virginia and around the globe. Ida’s Story - Human Trafficking

03:48
Current statistics suggest almost 21 million people are victims of forced labour globally, trapped in work which they were coerced or deceived into and which they cannot leave. Human trafficking is considered as forced labour and is one of the fastest-growing criminal activities. Trafficked individuals are modern day slaves. Traffickers trap them - often with the promise of paid work or education in another country, or even in a different part of the same country, then sell or force them to work for no pay, often under degrading conditions. Girls and women are more likely to be trafficked to the UK than boys and men. It can be difficult for trafficked people to escape, few manage to run away or are found by the police. Across the UK this remains an unseen issue that we are committed to tackling and have joined forces with Century Films this Red Nose Day to create a short video to raise its profile. Currently, Comic Relief is funding 10 projects that tackle trafficking in the UK. Just £20 could pay for an hour's one-to-one support for a trafficking survivor struggling to cope with post-traumatic stress disorder. If you would like to help us tackle issues such as trafficking, there are lots of ways to get involved and make a difference. Stop Traffic Fashion Show, Part 2/2

12:09
Human Trafficking is modern day SLAVERY. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), approximately 12.3 million adults and children are victims of forced labor, bonded labor, and forced prostitution around the world. The UN reports there is an estimated US$ 31.6 billion in global annual profits made from the exploitation of forced labor. It should be noted that due to the secrecy of the crime, it is hard to obtain precise data on the issue. In the U.S., the industries where forced labor and trafficking are most prevalent include agriculture, domestic service, factory work, hotel work, restaurant work, the sex industry, and sweat shops. However, what little protections are available to sex trafficking victims, are virtually non-existent to victims trafficked for labor purposes. It is important to recognize that the exploitation, physical danger, poverty, racism, sexism, and trafficking endemic to the sex industry similarly occur to victims in all industries. There are no practical distinctions between labor and sex trafficking, and laws should be revised recognizing this. All individuals who exploit others through trafficking must be equally punished. All victims should have access to immunity and the resources for rehabilitation it provides. Shane Dawson's Human Trafficking Story Gets Even More Disturbing

28:17
Shane Dawson’s latest video sparked a conversation about one of the scariest risks of online dating: human trafficking. If you suspect someone is a trafficker or being trafficked, you can report a tip or connect with anti-trafficking services through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (1-800-843-5678) or the National Human Trafficking Hotline (1-888-373-7888). No Child for Sale: Stop Child Labour in Sweatshops | World Vision

01:02
Join us in the fight to end child labour and slavery: http://s.wvc.ca/Y0ym88 Children are often lured or forced to work in illegal sweatshops because they need to help their parents pay for basic necessities such as food, shelter, and clothing. You may be unknowingly purchasing clothing and other items made by child labourers. Canada’s ongoing connection to child slavery in the apparel industry remains a major concern for World Vision Canada. In countries like Bangladesh, Vietnam and Cambodia children continue to work in dirty, dangerous and degrading conditions, including in the garment, footwear and textile industries. Trafficking is the world's 3rd most profitable organized crime, after the drug and arms trade. Millions of children – some as young as 6-years old – are working as slaves in sweatshops, on plantations, in dangerous mines and in the sex trade. Children around the world are forced to work jobs that are dirty, dangerous and degrading. These jobs beat children down physically, emotionally and psychologically. These jobs rob them of the chance to go to school and receive an education. This is unacceptable and it must stop. How can you help? • Canadian consumers should ask retailers to provide information on what they are doing to ensure their products are not made by children. Canadians can also shop ethically by choosing products that are certified to be free of child labour by organizations such as Fairtrade. • In countries where child labour exists, Canadians can protect a child from exploitation through monthly sponsorship. Through World Vision, Canadians support approx. 21,000 children in Bangladesh and13,000 in Cambodia, keeping them in school and out of factories. “Just imagine what would happen if your daughter was standing there. What would you do, how would you fight? So you have to join hands, you have to take each child as your daughter. Soon you will feel their sorrow and then you will feel the strength that comes out of you to protect them.” - Anuradha Koirala Born in 14 April 1949 to Colonel Pratap Singh Gurung and Laxmi Gurung, Anuradha Koirala was brought up in a family that regarded providing services for humankind as the best form of pious work. She studied in Saint Joseph Convent School Kalimpong, India. For more than twenty years, she taught English at various reputed schools of Kathmandu.
