At some point in your life you’ll probably be touched by male* suicide. It’s now the biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK with 12 men taking their own lives every day. In her challenging TEDx talk, Steph Slack shares her personal story of how losing her uncle to suicide caused her to question how we react to men who experience suicidal thoughts. Steph asks: what if we stop seeing having suicidal thoughts as something unusual, change our stereotypical expectations of men and instead, support men who have the courage to be vulnerable with us? What would happen if we all went home and had conversations with the men in our lives about what they’re feeling and thinking? The answer to solving today’s male suicide crisis may be simply listening to the men in our lives. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts or are in crisis, in the UK Samaritans operate a 24/7 helpline on 116 123 or CALM operate a helpline 5pm to midnight for men on 0800 585858. *all those who identify as male. Her portfolio of work focuses on three areas: the workplace (as an independent speaker and consultant advising on CR, D&I and wellbeing with a particular focus on mens' mental health and suicide awareness); schools (as Director of Who In The Zoo - a social enterprise producing a new classroom tool to help children understand and communicate their emotions); and the community (as a speaker and writer on mental health and male suicide prevention). Following on from my popular article, I voice my thoughts on suicide: http://www.pmcgregor.com/why-men-kill-themselves SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE HONEST VIDEOS LIKE THIS - http://www.youtube.com/c/paulmcgregorvideos This is a hard article to write, and it’s probably going to be a hard article for you to read. But it’s important to talk about it… Because that uncomfortable feeling around talking about or even thinking about suicide is just one reason suicide has become the leading killer of men under the age of 50. Why do men kill themselves? In fact, why does a man take his own life every 2 hours in the UK alone? Why is the suicide rate increasing year after year and why out of all of the suicides last year, a massive 76% were men? Isn’t it time we did something? Isn’t it time we changed the way we’re currently handling our emotions and spoke about it? I strongly believe so. After losing my Dad to suicide 6 years ago, I’ve consistently asked the same question many others who’ve been affected by suicide ask… Why? Why did he do it? What could we have done? I’ve dropped into depression myself, I’ve experienced that deep dark hole many men will experience in their life and I’ve seen why suicide can become not just a choice… but the only choice. Can suicide really be a choice if it’s the only choice available? I’m sure that’s what my Dad felt, as ourselves and people around us kept asking the question of why he did it. There needs to be more support, it needs to be openly spoken about and treated as it is… a health issue. Suicide is a subject people avoid talking about, people don’t like to admit the times they’ve felt suicidal and this silence is a huge factor behind the shocking statistics right now. 4,624 isn’t just a number, it isn’t just a statistic, it’s the amount of men who took their own life in the UK last year. The pain we went through as a family after my Dad took his own life, the pain we saw him go through, the amount of people around him it effected on paper just added an extra number to that ever rising figure. As you read this you yourself have probably been affected by suicide, or at least know someone who is. So let’s do something about it… Read the full article here: http://www.pmcgregor.com/why-men-kill-themselves Download the 'Man Up or Man Down' eBook for free today: http://www.pmcgregor.com

This video describes a troubling rise in suicide among men that is evident in the US, the UK and Australia. The video reviews the statistics that describe the suicide epidemic and then confronts a common belief about the driver of the epidemic and offers a possible explanation instead. Most people tend to think that the high suicide rate among men is due to the fact that men are taught not to express their feelings and therefore they are hesitant to seek counseling. If you look at suicide rates by race though, you see that black and Hispanic men actually commit suicide far less frequently than white men even though they have similar or greater expectations with regards to masculinity. This suggests that sexist expectations about behavior are not the only or even main cause. Instead, this video explores the idea that men may be lacking a "burden" or purpose for their lives. Blacks and Hispanics may find such a challenge due to racism in the culture. White people may have no such burden, or may not be able to rally around a racial identity and community as easily. This, plus the fact that modern technology and government intervention have made life relatively easy (relative to the past) may cause a lack of burden. That lack of burden may inspire a sense of purposelessness that leads to depression and suicide. Sources: 1. HuffPost Australia - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ak6sovXbXmI 2. Story of those like Ravi Kumar and many more...."Martyrs of Marriage" a documentary on misuse of IPC 498A on NETFLIX: https://www.netflix.com/title/80239988 Ravi Kumar ended life as his wife, who stayed with him just for 15 days filed a false dowry case on him and his family. In this suicide video he shares how just an accusation by his wife made him and his family a criminal, a pain he could not bear. Every year lacs of men and women get arrested in India under 498A also known as anti dowry law. Mere verbal accusations under this section lands a man and his entire family and even distant relatives, whosoever is named, behind bars. Thousands of men and their family members have ended their life because of the harassment meted out to them because of being accused under this section. In december 2017, another young lawyer from Delhi committed suicide because of false accusations by his ex-wife and his torture because of it. He left a 13 page suicide note. Read about him here: https://martyrsofmarriage.wordpress.com/2017/12/22/series-of-assaults-false-cases-threats-torture-by-wife-and-blind-eye-of-system-the-story-of-arvind-bharti/ The irony is that while even a social media post sans any sort of evidence is enough for police to arrest a man in India today, even such heart wrenching tales and evidences by men do not serve as evidence enough to take action against the woman. Save Indian Family, a movement in India raising voice for men's rights has been helping men under these circumstances through counselling and guidance. It is a network of people who have been through this ordeal. If you know any man in distress, please call SIFONE, A helpline for Men on 8882498498. They conduct free meetings in several parts of India. Men are more likely to commit suicide than women. Young men and older men are particularly vulnerable groups. The suicide rate peaks in men between the ages of 20 to 24, which, if isolated from the general statistics on suicide, places suicide as the third-ranking cause of death. Older people suffer from the loss of loved ones and friends and can feel isolated, ignored, valueless, or overly dependent on others. Suicide is the biggest killer of men between 20 and 49 in the UK. It is a shocking truth but I wanted to understand why so many young men are killing themselves. I went to Liverpool to meet Jake Mills, a stand up comedian who has suffered from severe depression. Jake tried to take his own life. Watch the debate here: http://bit.ly/Ydg6D9 Following the tragic death of Aaron Swartz on Friday the 11th of January, we were prompted into a discussion about suicide. At 7pm tonight, Truthloader will hold a LIVE discussion about this issue in our Google Hangout. We will have guest panelists and there will be room for you to have your say, so join us tonight at 7pm. The moment you begin to look at the numbers, it's clear that something needs to be done, and yet we rarely hear of suicide discussed in an open and frank fashion. So here are the frank statistics. A recent study showed that suicide is now the leading cause of death by injury in the United States, overtaking car accidents in 2009. In the UK, suicide is the leading cause of death of men aged 15 to 35, bar none, outstripping violent crime and even road accidents. One thing that is inescapable in the stats is the number of men who kill themselves. In the United Kingdom, 3.4 times as many men kill themselves as women. In the US, four times as many men kill themselves, and in Poland, the number is even higher at six times as many. So why are so many young men killing themselves? Over the last decade there have been vast improvements to car safety because society recognised the number of deaths taking place on the roads, where is the same outcry over the staggering statistics that show that more people are killing themselves than dying in car accidents. What can we do to reverse this worrying trend? Here are 20 young females who have sadly taken their own lives by Suicide. A person living with Anxiety and Depression is terrible. One of the most consistent findings in Suicide research is that women make more Suicide Attempts than men. There are several gender differences with regard to Suicide, involving differences in both successful Suicides and Suicidal behaviours for women and men. If you think there is a high risk of a person dying by Suicide before they can get the appropriate professional help, call the person’s doctor, a mental health crisis service or dial triple zero (000) and say that the person’s life is at risk. Do not leave them alone, unless you are concerned for your own safety. There is help out there. Love from MrCaringuy.

Suicide is now the biggest killer of young men across the UK, a charity has warned. The latest figures show that the suicide rate rose significantly in 2011 with a total of 6,045 people taking their own life - 4,552 of them were men. The highest rate was in the male age bracket 30-44 and the recession is thought to be playing a part in many of the deaths. "The reasons for suicide are complex and often very individual," Jane Powell from the Campaign Against Living Miserably told Sky News. "The economic climate and social factors such as insecurities around work and housing, social isolation and substance misuse are felt particularly strongly in this group." On average there are now three young male suicides in Britain every single day, according to CALM. British snowboarder Nelson Pratt, from Hampshire, took his own life last summer. His best friend Marcus Chapman has joined the charity's new campaign aimed at raising awareness of the issue. "Nelson was popular, healthy, successful and physically very fit," he told Sky News. "He was an amazing guy, he had it all, he had his life mapped out. "He went to his GP last summer when he was feeling down and was given a questionnaire and told to come back in a fortnight if he wasn't feeling any better. The next day he took his life. "It was devastating for everyone. How could someone so outwardly healthy have this happen to them? Men aren't very good at telling someone how they're feeling. By raising awareness we can get people talking." CALM is working with three graffiti artists in east London this weekend for 36 hours to get their message across. Ms Powell added: "It's hugely important that we raise awareness of male suicide. This is a huge problem now in the UK and the time has come to start talking about it." :: Anyone feeling emotionally distressed or suicidal can call Samaritans for help on 08457 90 90 90 or email [email protected]

Despite suicide rates actually declining – it's the lowest in 30 years – #suicide remains the leading cause of death for men aged under 50 in England and Wales. For many friends, relatives and partners of those how have taken their own life, suicide is a question of why. Yet they will never get to hear the answer. In our new documentary, Digital Editor Robert Hicks speaks to three young men who all attempted to take their own lives. Here, they talk about what they were feeling when they believed there was no way out. How #depression grabbed them and wouldn't let go. They reflect on what's happened since, how they cope and, most importantly, how they are doing better. We all have a mate, a colleague, a brother, a partner, a nephew, a father – a man in our lives who could be struggling. We need to get more men talking. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK. It is "suicide" for young men to go to encounter sites, the Jammu and Kashmir police chief said today, referring to stone-throwing at security forces by locals during anti-terror operations and the recent death of three civilians in clashes in Budgam. "Young boys should stay at homes and not come to encounter sites. The bullet does not see who is coming or who it will hit...," warned Director General of Police SP Vaid. He added, "Even security forces in an encounter take cover of a vehicle or house. Youths coming to encounter site are committing suicide." Exposure secured a grant from The Big Lottery Fund to help highlight the issue of suicide in young men, as well as promoting services that exist to help them. This short film entitled 'WORDS', was written, directed and edited by 16-year-old filmmaker Eren Kaplan. It shows segments of a young man's life, while we listen to his internal monologue, performed by local poet and hip hop artist Engineer Al. We watch as the protagonist is forced to confront the problems he faces, and the emotional impact they're having on him. These problems though are not specific to just him; they are issues that most young people will face. But our protagonist, like many similar to him, cannot cope because he is unable to communicate. Please watch and share. Raising awareness to ensure more young men talk about their problems is a key way of combatting suicide. The silence is killing us. New research from Dr Chris Bowden, who is a lecturer in Victoria’s School of Education and recently graduated with a PhD in health, reveals that a key aspect of young New Zealand men’s experiences of suicide bereavement is ubiquitous silence. In the first study of its kind, Dr Bowden found that young men aged between 17 and 25 who lost a close male friend to suicide, suffered, grieved and eventually recovered in silence. His research found the men experienced four types of silence following the suicide of a close friend: personal, private, public and analytic silence.

We can make a difference! Some news about suicides In 2017, for example, the Campo Grande Fire Department responded to 925 suicide attempts, with 50% of the victims being children and young people between the ages of 10 and 19. The number may be much higher, according to WHO (World Health Organization), each case registered, five are underreported. By 2018, 91 children and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 14 attempted suicide in the capital. It is striking that in the attempts, the girls represent the greater part. Data from Sesau (Municipal Health Department) show that of the 91 cases, 84 were girls, while 7 were boys. Among adolescents and young women aged 15 and 19, the female gender also accounts for the majority of cases. In 2018, according to Sesau, there were 277 suicide attempts in this age group, 208 of girls and 69 of boys. The rising suicide is a growing warning in public health. The issue is already one of the biggest concerns of the World Health Organization (WHO), which warns of the progress not only of suicide, but of diseases such as depression and anxiety. Across the globe, 800,000 people take their own lives every year. According to data from the Ministry of Health, between 2006 and 2016, 106,374 deaths from suicide were recorded in the SIM (Mortality Information System). In 2016, the rate reached 5.8 per 100 thousand inhabitants, with the notification of 11,433 deaths for this cause. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among men (9.2 per 100,000 inhabitants) and the eighth highest among women (2.4 per 100,000 inhabitants). Health Ministry surveys, released on Thursday (20), as one of the actions of the Yellow September, pointed out that, between 2011 and 2015, the rate of suicides in indigenous lands was 15.2 per 100 thousand people. 45% among young people aged 10 to 19 years. Among men, the rate was 23.3 (per 100 thousand people) and among women of 7.7 (per 100 thousand people). The number is significant for the state, since Mato Grosso do Sul has the second largest indigenous population in the country. According to the Ministry of Health, the causes for indigenous suicides are multifactorial, but social determinants such as violence, stigma, prejudice and intergenerational conflicts are pointed out.

My heart has a hole in it that will never be replaced. My son Blake, just 18 years old, just enlisted in the Air National Guard, everything to live for . He was my best friend. Anyone that knew us , knew how close we were. I loved him with all my heart. Everyone that knows me, knows that my children are my world and I wasn't just their mom, I was their best friends. I will no longer be able to go on long walks with him and share the things that we shared together. He was so heart broken and I wasn't able to save him. I was in Tennessee visiting my mom when he sent me a very sad text crying out for help. Because of the things that Blake had heard over the past few days had an affect on him. He was so hurt and lonely in his last few hours of his life and do you want to know why? .....We may not have pulled the trigger that ended his life but we all contributed in some way or another by Gossip!!! Ephesians 4:29 says Let no corrupting talk come out of our mouths but only such as good for building up as fits , the occasion., that it may give grace to those who hear. Titus 3:2 To speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling , to be gentle and to show perfect courtesy towards al people, Exodus 23:1 You shall not spread a false report And most, importantly Ephesians 4:32 Be kind to one another , tenderhearted, forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave you. I have raised my children to treat people how they want to be treated. That is how my Blake was. He was always loving, giving, compassionate thoughtful and always cared about other people. He just hurt so much in the last couple days of his life he just didn't know how to cope with it. My life will forever be changed . My son sent me a message on my phone right before he took his life and asked me to share his video with everyone. I'm going to full fill my sons last wish. I love you Blake and baby you will be heard. I encourage everyone to pass this video around and share it with others.
