Starring the Business of Fashion 500 (#BoF500), Fashion At Work brings the great and good of fashion together in a celebration of the industry's beautifully eccentric (and slightly dysfunctional) world. What it Takes to Become a Fashion Designer

10:57
In Episode 2 of the Fashion East documentary, we follow the journey of Lulu Kennedy’s newest recruits for their first shows with the designer mentorship scheme, and learn what exactly it takes to become part of Fashion East. First up is recent MA graduate and menswear designer Stefan Cooke, who digitally manipulates timeless fabrics and classic charity shop gems, reproducing the print onto flexible synthetic materials, dressing an army of princes for battle on the runway. To find out what it takes to become a designer, we join Lulu at an inspirational talk to fashion students at Central Saint Martins, meeting the up and coming names who have a Fashion East sponsorship in their sights. Finally we’re introduced to Charlotte Knowles, a womenswear designer that specialises in the tension between revealing and concealing, and the Fashion East team call her into the office for a chat about opportunities in the near future… How do you make the leap from fashion graduate to fully fledged designer? What do the Fashion East team look for in a newcomer? And after having just joined the scheme, will Stefan be ready to show at MAN? Lulu Chen on Learning Art Director Skills for Fashion Photo Shoots

02:21
In Chapter 12 of 16 in her 2012 Capture Your Flag interview, art director Lulu Chen answers "What Has Taking Direction as a Stylist Taught You About Giving Direction as an Art Director?" Working on-set as a fashion stylist, Chen gets to work with a variety of talented art directors and creative directors. She learns how approach and prepare for jobs as well as how to motivate teams and stay organized in deadline-driven environments. Lulu Chen is a photo art director working in retail e-commerce in New York City. Previously, Chen worked as a freelance stylist for leading fashion catalogs and magazines. She earned a BFA in design and art history from the University of Michigan. Capture Your Flag is a career documentary interview series that interviews 60 up and coming leaders annually to gather knowledge and share a Near Peer Learning experience its audience may use to better plan, pursue and achieve life and career aspirations. Discover more at http://www.captureyourflag.com/ Follow us on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/captureyourflag Like us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/captureyourflag Transcript: Erik Michielsen: What has taking direction as a stylist taught you about giving direction as an art director? Lulu Chen: Well, I was lucky enough to work with a lot of different art directors. And if I had been an art director coming up the ranks, just as an art director, I think I would’ve been limited to how many different approaches and different people that I could’ve worked with, so I was very lucky and I worked with a lot of really talented art directors and creative directors. And what I learned from them is some really great ways on prepping jobs, how their approach was, how they communicate, and then not to sound negative but also what not to do. So, you know, all the things to do and strive for, and then some of the things that maybe, you know, I should try not to do. So my take away from that is that organization is really helpful. And sometimes it’s hard because you’re wearing the creative hat, but you really have to get things done in a timely manner, you know, there’s always deadlines. And there’s a lot of money at stake, you know, photo shoots are expensive, you have to get certain things done in a day or two days, and it’s a lot of pressure, to see how other people handle that, to see how people communicate well—actually, how they also motivated and inspired their teams, was really nice to see. So I did learn a lot as a stylist. I was able to observe. Erik Michielsen: And so now you’re on the other side of the fence. Lulu Chen: Oh, definitely. I definitely try and keep all those things in mind, you know, all the things that worked for me, or that I really appreciated, and I try and do that as well. But it’s funny because a lot of people tell me that I’m so nice, and—which you’d think is a compliment but sometimes I am like, “Did they not think it’s genuine?” Because I like someone speaking to me in a certain way so I’m going to try and speak to everyone else in that tone, you know. But that doesn’t mean that I’m not gonna be able to get my job done, you know. But I think it’s always nicer to talk to people in a nice way, right? Yeah, it’s like I don’t have—I don’t wanna go there unless I really have to.

It always helps, And let me know what you thought about these changes if you have any input :). This was some crazy announcements to happen, especially in a such a short period of time, I mean when Hedi Slimane was announced at Celine, I was excited But then news followed of Burberry, Dior and Louis Vuitton having new placements, with Virgil Abloh of Off-White taking the LV position. So I had to cover it and put all the announcements into one video and hope you guys enjoy! Since this video was made: Haider Ackermann has left Berluti, replaced by Kris Van Assche Haider was only at Berluti for 18 months, so you can see why these tenures mentioned in the video were so substantial, with Christopher Bailey being at Burberry for 17 years or Phoebe Philo at Celine for 10 years. What HR Managers Learn About You By Looking at Your Clothes

09:03
If you want to get your dream job, it’s crucially important to make the best possible first impression on the recruiter, and everything, including your style, means a lot. There are five vital things you should know that hiring professionals use to form their opinions about you and decide if you will fit into the corporate culture and get the job or not. Sherry Maysonave, head of Empowerment Enterprises, an image consulting firm based in Austin, Texas, says that the first impression happens in less than 30 seconds and it’s based entirely on your attire. Using the color of your clothes, you can influence other people however you want. Pastel colors in clothes and makeup can help you win other people’s trust. The most important thing is not to overdo it. Blue is probably the best color choice for a job interview, unless you’re aiming for a creative job. The color red represents the life force and the inclination to be successful and efficient. Business suits are not always the best choice for a job interview because the impression you may give the employer is that you are “overqualified.” A tasteful statement dress that doesn’t reveal your neckline and ends around 1 inch above the very top of your knee will do just fine. Your attire should be as close to the company dress code as possible. People are more eager to accept other people who are like them, so the more you look like the other employees, the easier it is for an HR manager to imagine you working with them. Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS What the colors of your clothes say about you 0:33 What the style of your clothes says about you 3:21 What your brands say about you 5:07 Illustrative details 5:47 How well can you fit into the corporate culture 6:52 SUMMARY -Blue is probably the best color choice for a job interview. If you choose clothes with contrasting colors, you could make a powerful and dominant impression. The worst color choice for a job interview, according to studies and opinions of specialists, is orange — it’s often associated with something unprofessional. -A business quit is the perfect choice if a manager is hiring for a senior-level position, a flower print dress won’t do in this case. But if you are looking for a job teaching children or a creative job, this type of attire is not just appropriate, but also preferable. -It’s better to impress your prospective employee with your professional achievements and attitude to work than with luxury brand logos. -Bad manicure, old clothes, and other little flaws, can make a very negative impression. Wear small and elegant pieces of jewelry like small earrings, bracelets, and watches. Your bag should have a clear shape. -Use social media to find out all about the company dress code and try to look like the other employees at the interview.
