What your speaking style, like, says about you | Vera Regan | TEDxDublin

15:47
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. How we use language - our accent, expressions, and the structure of our sentences - changes from region to region. Vera Regan explains why we should listen to these differences, and why language can act as a cultural barometer. Sociolinguist Vera Regan is a researcher at University College Dublin, and her work explores the relationship between our cultural landscape and our changing language. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

How to Give a Speech like Ronald Reagan | Public Speaking

02:04
Watch more Public Speaking Training videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/505089-How-to-Give-a-Speech-like-Ronald-Reagan-Public-Speaking What can people learn about the speaking style of Ronald Reagan? Now, he is called the great communicator, but people often misjudge what his true speaking skill was. They think, oh he was just a natural communicator, great Hollywood star. That's not really what it was. He brought an actor's discipline to the speaking process. For example, when he had a major speech, like the State of the Union address, he would meet with his advisors for months in editorial meetings, coming up with ideas, stories, changes, and revisions on the speech. Then he had the discipline of telling them the speech has to be finished, finished, finished a week before he gave it. He would then spend three hours a night reading the speech out loud in the residency above the Oval Office in the White House. Even that wasn't enough. He would then spend an entire day of videotaped rehearsal practicing for the speech. Not to memorize it, because he was using a teleprompter. He was practicing on video to make sure everything was just right, that he put the right emphasis on the right word, and that he was comfortable with it. That way when he was actually giving the speech he didn't seem like he was reading a teleprompter. He felt like he was just speaking to you. It seemed like he was just speaking to you. That feeling came out. That's why he was so effective. The other thing is he had a rule with his speech writers. He'd say, I don't ever want to talk for more than two minutes without talking about a real person with a real problem. Ronald Reagan understood when you're President you're using the bully pulpit. It's not about simply conveying the most facts, conveying the most numbers. You've got to give people a sense of importance. They've got to visualize it and understand it at a human level. That's why he was the great communicator.

How to Sound Conversational in a Speech | Public Speaking

02:15
Watch more Public Speaking Training videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/505104-How-to-Sound-Conversational-in-a-Speech-Public-Speaking So how do you make sure you're just as good at your prepared speech, as you are in your Q and A, the question and answer session? Common problem people have. They come to me, and they say, "TJ, I'm great at the Q and A session. People are laughing, they're connecting. I come alive. But my prepared speech, it just falls flat. It seems to bore people." That's a common scenario that, if applies to you, you're not alone. What's the solution, though? Let's step back. Why are you good at Q and A? Typically you're good at Q and A because you listen to one idea at a time. You're answering with just one idea, one message, and then you often give an example. Sometimes tell a story. And you're not trying to do some big data dump pointing to 29 different bullet points. That's what makes the Q and A good. And you typically go from the abstract from the concrete. You say, "Oh, that happened to one of my clients the other day. Oh, that's just like what happened in our Miami office." You're instantly taking someone's question and relating it to something specific, concrete. You're going from the abstract, the theoretical to the concrete example. That's what makes your Q and A interesting. That's what makes it memorable. That's what draws in your audience. Well, guess what, that's what you should be doing in your speech, too. The problem most people have with their presentations is it's too abstract. It's too dry. You don't have enough examples. You don't have enough stories. So if you want a fast, fast, easy solution, take your speech, tear it up, and throw it away. Instead, come up with the ten most likely questions you would face if you had to talk to anyone in your audience for a half an hour. And just come up with that as your speech. Forget a big long speech. Forget the big PowerPoint. Come up with ten questions. Have those on a sheet of paper, and that is your speech. That's your outline, and that's what you want to say throughout the speech. Do that, and now your speech will be just as good as your Q and A session.

7 Public Speaking Tips We Can Learn From Donald Trump

06:52
Politics aside, Donald Trump’s ability to hold the attention of an audience and indeed a nation is undeniable. It’s a quality that anyone who has done public speaking, be it to a stadium or to a boardroom, would be envious of. To figure out what makes Trump so hard to ignore, VICE News spoke to Dr. Jennifer Mercieca, a professor and historian of political rhetoric, and Mark Liberman, a professor of linguistics and computer science. Both have studied Trump’s speech extensively and together they provided us seven signatures moves Trump uses to engage an audience. How to Give a Speech like Steve Jobs | Public Speaking

02:16
Watch more Public Speaking Training videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/505088-How-to-Give-a-Speech-like-Steve-Jobs-Public-Speaking So what can we learn from the speaking style of Steve Jobs? First of all, who was Steve Jobs? He was a tech guy. He was head of a big tech company. He gave technical speeches. But what does that mean? Most people, when they say they give technical speeches, what they mean is they turn their back to you. They point to a really complicated graph, with 29 different bullet points. That's what people think they're doing when they're giving so-called technical speeches. Well, Steve Jobs gave technical speeches too, but he did it in a way that actually worked. When he used a slide, he used an image. If he wanted to talk about an iPhone, he showed a picture of an iPhone. He didn't put up text and 89 different bullet points of the specs. When he wanted to demonstrate the thinness of one of his knew laptop computers he didn't put up a bullet point slide that said "Thinness .18 inches." That's not what he did. He had someone bring out an envelope and he simple pulled this new laptop out of the envelope to dramatize how thin it was. He realizes even though he's got the best technology in the world, often there's nothing better than a simple prop of a ten cent envelope. That made his point. The other thing he did is he rehearsed a great deal. People who worked with him say he would obsess over his major presentations for weeks. He would rehearse for days because he understood how important this was. It's not something you just dash off at the last minute because there's no time. If you're the CEO there's nothing more important than giving a great presentation to galvanize people's attention, to motivate them to want your product, to use your product. And that's why he was very careful to walk around the stage, to be conversational, to demonstrate. And when he used images that he projected, it wasn't about text. It was about one idea at a time, one visual at a time. That's what made Steve Jobs an effective communicator.
