There are many ways to wear leggings. But before I show you how I style leggings in my everyday outfits, I want to explain how to recognize good quality leggings.
To help you get the right fit, consider these criteria:
1. Choose the length based on your body
2. Make sure the seams are not pulling (or change sizes if they do)
3. Check the back rise (especially if you are curvy)
4. Choose the right type of waistband
5. Test the fabric: is it thick enough to cover you and to be resistant over time
6. Have a look at the fiber content (on the label inside): cotton/elastane or viscose/elastane are good combinations.

here in Canada leggings are worn anywhere anytime and with whatever... Lululemon is one of the most popular brands, originally designed for yoga and athletic wear... latest local trend is very high-waisted black leggings and crop-tops. Not an easy look to pull. At all. I love that double belt you're wearing with the tunic. What brand is it?
Hi from Queensland Australia, New Subscriber sent over from Alyssa Beltempo, I wear leggings like You, with a longer tunic over the top, anything that covers the butt Lol 😂 area, or even under my jeans in Winter for that extra warmth.....Looking forward to going through your videos for a capsule Winter wardrobe and inspiration.....🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺💖💖💖💖
I agree with most of this. And unless you're in a country that really oppresses women and dictates what they should wear, if you like leggings and want to wear all the time, wear them anytime any day ⚛️
Honestly wearing capri leggings with balerinas I don't think it has considered pretty at any moment except maybe around 2005-2010 wich is not the best era for fashion, & I would definitely avoid wearing shorts above a legging I find both quite tacky... +To me a 7/8 legging length (showing ankles) is better I feel that it elongates the body and creates more contrast. Obviously all of this is subjective and varies with trends & cultures & personnal trends. Wearing a legging with a dress or a tunique might be ok and even sometimes quite stylish but it really depends on the dress and the balance is not that easy to create
We wear leggings as pants here in Seattle. I own 16 pairs of leggings and 2 pairs of jeans and 2 pairs of “slacks” (more formal, dress pants). I wear leggings as pants almost every day. People in Seattle are very active and athletic and outdoors a lot, it rains a lot here, and we generally don’t use umbrellas! So we tend to dress more casually and in athletic wear whenever possible. For the office I wear skirts and dresses with tights and flats or heels.
I'd love to see a similar video for jeans - with tips on fit, material, stitching, etc. I'm also curious about how name brands compare. I hear a lot of the same manufacturers supply clothing for different brands - this is also another topics I'd be interested to see a video on. So much to learn!
I am a Hungarian, living in Slovenia. I think leggings should not be replacement for trousers, it gives a cheap look. I do wear them, but only with tunics or shirt dresses, which I like a lot. Leggings by itself are only for running for me.
I wear leggings as pants, and you can really style, make it sexy, casual or dressed up..
Sometimes I wear my vintage leather leggings with thight shirt or casual knitwear. It really depends.... boots/sandals/heels make them look really good, and dressed up. I love edgy look, and a bit of sexy in every outfit.
Mine are all black and non transparant 😄
I loveeee leggings, I buy good quality, and have in my closet neutrals, and a few printed. I wear them with tunic tops, and dress them up with accessories. I never could stand the material of denim, I feel just uncomfortable in jeans, and I live a casual lifestyle so dress slacks most of the time won’t do... I have been blessed with nice legs, but my waist is my problem, so leggings are my best friend. Enjoyed this video as I do all the others. Have learned so much from your channel xo
Thank you for the style tips. İ'm 51 yrs old and still can't catch on on how to dress or wear anything. You can give me an open credit card and put me in the most stylish store or creative boutique, and İ will still come out looking frumpy. Hahaha. İ just....don't....get it. Maybe a dna thing. lol
Can you do a video explaining how to buy tights/pantyhose? I wore them as a kid before leggings came in style. I tried again to buy them as an adult because with some outfits they just look a little classier than leggings - leggings can look too casual or even sloppy with a nice dress. They look great with dress shorts at work! Seeing you wearing leggings and shorts reminded me of that.
I was surprised how expensive they can get... so I bought some cheap tights from Walmart and they were okay but I found the elastic around the waist was painful, and they got holes in the material very quickly. I keep going up a size every time I buy them because they always feel too short and too tight to the point that I will break them and now I'm buying an XL, hoping the elastic won't give me a muffin top (my shorts are size 6!). I have no idea what's a worthy brand to buy, they've all seemed terrible so far. They always seem to pinch my butt in an awkward way too.
I would also like to know how to wear them with shoes properly... I know that seems like a no brainer, but some shoes can't seem to handle pantyhose (especially flats) - my feet are too slippery and cold inside, the seam on the toes are uncomfortable etc etc
I watched this video only now but your shorts + leggings outfit is my literally every day casual style :D and I was so far only one I saw wearing it, including the almost identical shoes :D . I ride bike to work, I love shorts in winter for the option to layer leggins, tights, thermal leggins...and in case of rain they dry immediately.
in my mid -80’s, I have lost 5cm in height, and although I’m not fat ,I am dumpy , plus I have to wear orthopaedic shoes. So, a bit handicapped really. I had fun doing stage one of my capsule wardrobe, not quite ready for stage 2.
I am liking pants rather than skirts and blazers rather than cardigans , do you have other helpful ideas? I love your videos and would watch them for fun even if they don’t apply to me. However they are inspiring me to go on with pruning my wardrobe. Thank you so much..Every good wish!
Justine, here in the U.S.A. the people that wear the leggings as a pants replacement are not very educated as what to, how to, and where to wear certain pieces like leggings and even pajama pants. I wear my leggings just like you with a longer top covering my hips. I've seen people at the store wearing pajama pants, it truly makes me sick at my stomach. Your info is so refreshing and appreciated. I'm sharing this video on my facebook page. Thank you!
I agree with you that when one wears leggings, the crotch & bum should be well covered & you should anticipate your likely movements & make sure your modesty will still be preserved without constant readjustment of your clothing.
In Italy, leggings are not used in the work place. However, many teenage girls do wear leggings with crop tops, and most of these leggings are not top quality. Women generally wear long tops or tunics over their leggings.
In the US I can't wear leggings on the airplane, because I'm a pilot's wife and the airlines have strict etiquette rules for family members 'representing the airline.' Everywhere else is fine. But since I'm curvy I don't use them as a replacement of pants.
I should have seen this video before buying 10 pairs of girlfriend branded leggings. They are a great cause and I thought they fit properly but it turns out they don't actually fit that well. This was so insightful. As someone with a curvier body, your information is still relevant because a lot of these tips are simply about fit and can be helpful no matter the body type.
I live in Canada and have been obsessed with leggings for a few years now. I have probably 10-15 pairs in total and I will wear them as pants, but only my insulated ones which are quite a bit thicker and soooo nice in the colder months. The thin ones I wear the same as I would nylons, under a dress, skirt, tunic, or really long shirt (I'm short so rather than dresses looking like tunics, I have shirts that sometimes look like tunics, haha.)
However after watching this video I realize most of the ones I own are not fitted properly for my body. Having to hike them up all the time is super annoying, so I'll probably start slowly purging and replacing them with better quality ones, if/when I can find them.
Here in Japan you definitely cannot wear leggings out as pants, Japanese women will wear them for warmth or cover underneath skirts, dresses, or pants. The only exception is when you go to the gym or exercise outside.’ Other than that, it’s a no no for modesty and decency.
Just a note on fiber content: if you’re wearing leggings for actual exercise (gym, hot yoga, skiing, hiking, climbing, etc.) then synthetic fibers *are* usually best. Synthetics don’t absorb your sweat, but wick it to the surface, where it can evaporate quickly. Most natural fibers will absorb moisture and take forever to dry, which leaves you feeling clammy, and in cold weather can lead to hypothermia. Mountaineers have an old saying, “cotton kills”. Merino wool - with a little spandex - is a great choice for winter leggings under a skirt or a long chunky sweater as street wear (250 grams, or more, for opacity), and great as a base layer for winter sports (any weight, with or without spandex) because it retains heat even when wet and it’s naturally anti-microbial, therefore resisting sweaty odors.
I would like to know how to dress bottoms if I have a baby bulge tummy. That tummy never disappeared and my tops has to be a little long to hide the front area of my body. Please suggest the style for jeans and tops if you can to style for this flaw. I am a petite and apple shape.
There are jeggings, which take the form of leggings, that are usually made of thicker material and take the place of pants/jeans. Mainly denim but could be a thicker elastane with patterns or seams. These are normally worn with jumpers or shirts and T shirts. They may also be embellished with pockets, embroidery, other details that resemble what you might find on a regular trouser. There are the thinner jersey or lycra, elastane leggings which are usually plain knit in various colours - most popular being grey, black and navy blue - and worn as a replacement for tights under tunics and shorter dresses or a longer thick shirt.
Oh, Justine, bless your soul! I really needed this video, I was so confused about choosing leggings, lots of considerations you’ve raised about stuff I wouldn’t have guessed. For a long time I was confused about the appropriateness of wearing them in the office. Thank you for what you’re doing, your work is so informative and educational.
I am 21 leggings are my saving grace when I go to university, I always wear them with a long t-shir or sweater, plus a modern looking oxford shoe and I am ready to go. But I would not wear them as a replacement for stockings, they just look awful to me I feel like in Italy wearing leggings underneath shorts or skirts is not a thing and it's considered as not stylish.
Thanks for the information Justine. Sadly, in the U.K., leggings are replacing trousers. Perhaps it is an age thing, but to me it looks tacky and inappropriate. In a lot of cases the old saying "Just because you can doesn't mean you should" comes to mind.
In Canada, girls and women tend to wear leggings everywhere - to the shopping mall, to school, to sleep and even to the office! However, I could be biased as I live in a metropolitan city (Toronto, Ontario), and this observation might not be true for the rest of my country.
Hey. If really love for you to do a video on the best fabrics for travelers or digital nomads. Which ones are most durable, quickest drying, mold resistant, stain resistant, wrinkle resistant, and could also double as sports clothes. Thanks!
I am in the US, I am shocked at the non layering going on😮. Comfort is great, but too many I see use the cheap thin ones for pant replacements, not pleasing to look at! Very few , actually none should be trouser replacements. Modesty means you have respect for yourself, and wish others to respect you as well. Sadly lacking in my area.
Here in the US I wear leggings as pants to school for the majority of the cold season, especially fall, because I have marching band practice both during and after school, so it’s just easier and more comfortable. Thankfully no practice on Wednesdays, so then I wear what I want, and Monday’s are sectionals, so I can usually get away with a skirt and fashion shoes
In Canada people wear legging as pants is very common in winter for school or weekends. Not common at work place, especially in Toronto. Canada Goose+leggings+ uggs = Canadian girl staples. And Canadian loves lululemon leggings
I wear them with knee-length sports shorts (Puma evostripe move men's) or a wrap skirt. I'm planning on getting pants that end below the knee and get wider towards the bottom and wearing them with leggings. I definately like unique, techwear-esque silhouettes.
Hello, Justine, I am curious....how do you feel about older women wearing leggings? I am 68 and an American size 14-16, but I cannot bring myself to wear leggings. I would love to wear solid black or dark brown (no crazy patterns!). Please help...and many thanks.
Impressed about how women care and judge what other women are dressing! Gitls, watch the videos, learn and be your best version without “hating when people do tjis or that”. This is holarious and sad!! I am so impressed! In my country, using leggings with tunics or dresses is considered ugly and completely out of fashion (Brazil). I live in US and thanks God you are free to use WHATEVER you feel good! It is your life, your body! You dont like to see people’s body lines? Dont look at them! It is so simple. I am a Yoga teacher, 41 yo, I use leggings as my work wardrobe. I dont feel the need to cover my hips most pf the time. Womam body is so shameful or disgusting you should cover some parts for the sake of society? C’mon ... have beautiful attitudes and posture and nobody will notice your pants :) ps: I am a very fashion person ( I am brazilian!) but honestly, there are soooo much more important things in a person than ots clothes.
I saw a woman with a pair of brown leggings (and a belly shirt). She had on sheer pink lace underwear. I could clearly see the pattern of the lace and the tag that was in the seam of the underwear and of course her skin. I averted my eyes quickly and they still felt scalded. Not sure why women today feel the need to display their basically naked lower half --front and back -- to the entire world.
Thanks for your video, very you : )
In the UK it is ok to wear leggings in the office as long as you look smart. A nice long top or shirt are good, but you don't show your bum, or at least you try not to x
Great video! I enjoy wearing leggings to just below my knees with skater dress tops and flat shoes . I also like to wear leggings to my shins beneath short pencil skirt with split to the side. I wear leggings just below my knees beneath A line skirts which come to above my knees. 😃👠👠
Learning how to draw cartoon animals from the farm is not such a difficult task! Weve grown up surrounded by them! Farm animals are everywhere: In blockbuster movies, childs books, greeting cards. their shapes and images are printed in our minds!
In this section, I will show you how to determine what are the physical uniqueness of each animal and how to work with them. Then, you can practice drawing each cartoon character using basic shapes.
You will have the opportunity to make nice illustrations, practice sketching and cartooning using short easy lessons and complete your creation using a drawing software to create vector art if you want to! Cartoon drawing is really fun once you get into it!
Dont be afraid to try until you get it right. This method is really simple, but requires practice and observation. So, sit back and relax. Learn how to draw animals from the farm and start your journey on a good note!
Lets try s few basic characters to get started! :)
A cute turkey to begin with.
In this first tutorial, you can learn how to draw a fun turkey mostly made from small rectangles and large circular shapes. The posture of the character is really interesting. Not only is it easier to draw than a front version, but its also easier to add some perspective (as we can see with the legs). The fact that we just need to draw one wing is also interesting.
Most of these cartoon animals are not filled with complex textures or digital effects. In this case, the subject is filled with plain colors and only a few basic details (inside the tail) were added.
A nice turtle also from a side view.
