Scientists' Crazy Plan To Refreeze The Arctic

12403 ratings | 559660 views
As the mean global temperature continues to rise, the arctic ice caps continue to melt. What are scientist planning to do about it? Here's a hint: it involves 10 million sea water pumps. Read More: Scientists Have Announced a Plan to 'Refreeze' the Arctic - and It's Wild http://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-have-announced-a-plan-to-refreeze-the-arctic-and-it-s-wild "Desperate times call for desperate measures, and with temperatures near the North Pole hitting an unheard-of 20°C (36°F) warmer than average last year, things in the Arctic are undeniably grim right now. But rather than sit by and watch as the sea ice disappears from the region at an unprecedented rate, scientists have hatched a crazy plan to 'refreeze' the Arctic, by installing some 10 million wind-powered pumps over the ice cap to spray sea water over the surface and replenish the sea ice." Arctic ice management http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2016EF000410/full "As the Earth's climate has changed, Arctic sea ice extent has decreased drastically. It is likely that the late-summer Arctic will be ice-free as soon as the 2030s. This loss of sea ice represents one of the most severe positive feedbacks in the climate system, as sunlight that would otherwise be reflected by sea ice is absorbed by open ocean. It is unlikely that CO2 levels and mean temperatures can be decreased in time to prevent this loss, so restoring sea ice artificially is an imperative." How a giant space umbrella could stop global warming http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20160425-how-a-giant-space-umbrella-could-stop-global-warming "The race to find a solution to a rapidly warming world is one of the most pressing challenges facing our planet. One proposal to try to halt this warming is literally out-of-this-world: a giant, space-based sunshade. We're already modifying our climate by accident, so why not do it by deliberate geoengineering? It's a radical idea, and it just might just work. Reducing the amount of light reaching our planet could cool the Earth quickly, even with rising carbon dioxide levels." ____________________ DNews is dedicated to satisfying your curiosity and to bringing you mind-bending stories & perspectives you won't find anywhere else! Maybe instead of trying to postpone the consequences of releasing a large amount of Co2 into the atmosphere every day, we should get to the root of our problem and stop producing so much Co2. Aswell start using more renewable energy, such a solar & wind power.

We should make a giant mirror that focuses light into a beam we can shoot at mars to release co2 and warm it up

That way we both slow global warming and cause it on Mars, which would improve the colonization effort

And how much CO2 would be generated by making that steel. They clearly didnt think very hard about this. And all for what, it WILL melt eventually anyways. Stupid and expensive. We can do better.

How about hot water solar panels? Millions of panels located in the hot desert regions of the planet could cool the planet by pumping hot water down into the rock below, where it would get absorbed and stored away the the melting ice. Hot water goes down, cold water comes up. Like a giant air conditioner.
Adam O'Shea (4 months ago)
The way for this to work is all the devolved countries Come together and pay for this project over a 20 year period in money to build the pumps and in material costed to make the pumps. This is not a far fetched idea it's properly our best shot at saving the earth from climate change. WE GOT IN THIS MESS LETS GET OUT OF IT TOGETHER!

I can see in the comments, the people are well trained ( & therefore ready to pay climate taxes & more for energy ( even before the taxes, we've got billionares profit margins to consider)) Yep, the people have been taught to blame themselves, for a non existent problem. Pollution is a problem but Co 2 is not carbon pollution or any kind of pollution. It's a trace gas that's only a tiny proportion of the earth atmosphere, but with out it ( or even if it declined significantly) there would be no plant life on the Earth & therefore no life at all. The 1930s were the warmest decade for many centuries & though the 1980s &90s there was slight global warming. It didn't get close to 1930s levels & 1930s was way cooler than the Medieval Warm Period. Then a few centuries ago was the Maunder Minimum. If that occoured today, billions of people would die off. Polar ice is more extensive than it's been for decades and the last 5 or 6 Northern Hemisphere winters have been the coldest and snowiest for years, 2016/17 being the worst for decades, only beaten by 2017/18 which was even more severe.

Bullshxt. In fact this whole channel is probably bullshxt. There is NO evidence that the Artic is shrinking, and even if it was, the cause would more likely be natural than man-made; we are at the tail-end of an Ice Age.

Make a big flat sheet of reflective material and launch it to the space to reflect the light from the earth The material needs to be heat degradable in less than 3 minutes It may work since sun is constantly providing heat, if we block the sunlight for less than 3 minutes,we may have enough time to release the heat earth gained out into the space

DeRien8 (9 months ago)
wouldn't all that freezing water just release its heat to the immediate air and make the freezing less effective as the pumps continue to spray? granted the effect would be minimal initially and would probably only be noticeable at much larger scale, but I'm interested to see what the math they've done says about the energy that gets reflected by the ice compared to the energy liberated from the freezing seawater to the air.

Make the oil companies build 1 for 1 to pump water for every 1 oil rig easily done for them. It would be nice to see the volume of oil that gushed from the deep water horizon be doing some good as reclaiming arctic ice instead of lining the pockets of a scumbag in a suit that cries about his billions, they wouldn’t even feel the pinch. It’s well passed time to make these greedy people to pay. What a tax cut? Ok, do this for free. Seems absurd that nobody has fought for equal pain or repercussions. Question, if you get a speeding ticket, and it’s $300, how much of your income does that represent and how much of a penalty it is to you? So my point is, it’s nothing to a millionaire, and they don’t learn anything because it’s pocket change. If it’s an equal percentage based on income. 5% is 5% no matter how much it ends up being to the individual. I think I solved a few budget short comings.

Climate change, global warming, blablabla... Volcanos does more damage than humanity can. The polar caps won't be gone in 15years...bollocks. We are still going through an ice age. That's why we have so much ice. This happens naturally. You can't stop it....well got can. This is why species live and die. This is why the strong survive and this is why life mutates and evolves to survive in the newer climates and why the weak die out. If you look back when the giants were on the earth, they couldn't evolve and died out, dinosaurs few survived, some animals survived, humans keep surviving, we've been around millions of years... We can survive the iceage. It's life sadly. Why do you think they keep finding civilisations in the jungles, or buried in the deserts or high up in the mountains and some seem to have been advanced.

Key words from the us .now this would not be a big problem if all country's chipped in equally but that's the us umm stand to play Earth's mother while neglecting starving and driving us citizens into another depression. Over concern cost of changing the world, over seas medical expenses free them charged to the us economy. Over population leading to lack of food. I can't go on and on how the us is doing the oposite of there goal. My us government is and economy is funding and trying to fix the world at large doing more harm than good.each year native us citizens are what I call defecting from the us at an exelerated rate. While the amount of foren people's are invading at an alarming rate. But over population is a world wide problem.it is a government's responsibility to control and maintain a populis.the answer to the problem..... There is no answer more does the us care. People up north knows that they spread salt on the roads to melt the ice. So what happens to the ice and snow when they spray it with salty sea water? We do know that the ice and snow at the poles is made of fresh water. Don't we?

I have no clue how long you have been studying global warming but, short story short I'm probably gonna have a TERRIBLE life because of this. I've been studying for well, I started when I was 5. Humanity is on the verge of extinction. The good news is we’ve figured out a way to save us and the planet... However there’s only one problem... It’s gonna cost too much money, sooo sorry y’all, we can’t do it.” Money could really be humanity’s doom. With the way the US came together to produce in the face of danger in WW2, there’s NO REASON we shouldn’t be able to make the pumps as far as man power. The 50 trillion... who cares! Our future is at stake. Why 50 trillion is even a talking point is beyond me. I mean I get it, but geez... somethings just shouldn’t come with a price tag.

Dr. Zoidberg (10 months ago)
Solar power is already on a strong trajectory to completely dominate global energy generation within the next 12-17 years, and electric self-driving cars are on a trajectory to start replacing gas powered cars on a similar timeframe -- so we can expect to stop producing large amounts of CO2 and CFCs within a decade or 2. We might as well dedicate resources to developing scalable technology which can scrub the atmosphere of greenhouse gasses. At that point, global climate change would become a non-issue, because we would be able to balance our planet's climate in whichever way we see fit.

How costly would it be to manufacture enough auto reflective covering made out of material that reflects the sun to cover let's say 40 to 50% of the artic? Even if you had to have every old lady in the orient sewing day in day out it is a better solution than to use freaking contaminates that will kill more humans and wild life than save! You cannot tell me that NASA does not have some kind of material that will reflect the sun? Forget the steel, forget the aerosol, pull out the covers!

When "science" spouts this much garbage, it deserves to be ignored. These morons have no idea how the atmosphere works. The arctic was never in jeopardy. It has already returned to very high levels without any human intervention and is set to grow more by leaps and bounds in the coming 2 decades. With La Ninia and the current cooling trend, the entire "effect" of warming in the last 120 years of human caused warming has already been erased from the instrumentation. Land weather stations and satellite raw data is not being communicated at all to the public. This is dishonest in the extreme. All while scaring people into insane political and financial obligations.

Spraying the ice with saltwater will lower the melting point of the ice, making it more susceptible to melting in the future. Unless you plan to desalinate the water before spraying it onto the ice, that plan is, in the long term, counterproductive.
