How to Sew a Pair of Leggings, two ways---for any age!

25416 ratings | 2087968 views
Leggings are cute, comfy, and work for any age---from babies up to adults! Plus they're super easy to make. I mean, like 4 steps easy. My friend Miranda (http://www.onelittleminuteblog.com/) and I will show you two ways to make them---on a standard Baby Lock sewing machine, and on a Baby Lock serger. We'll even show you how to make your own pattern, so you can make these again and again and again. Cause I know you will! Come sew with us.... For more ideas visit my website: http://www.madeeveryday.com/ Visit Miranda's site at: http://www.onelittleminuteblog.com/ Learn about and purchase a sewing machine or serger at: http://babylock.com/

Can you show how you made your tights with the the black stripe on the knee that your guest was wearing please

Thank you for the video. Love the serger tips. Keeping the fabric above the needle while doing the Hem is the best. It will help me a lot in sewing hats and bags. Love the idea of a hem done with a serger. Thanks again for all your effort.

it took me 3 tries, but I think the third one finally came out right. First try, weird pattern came out so the shape of front/back were kind of weird. Plus, didn't fold the waist part, so in the end it ended up being like 10cm over my belly button. Second time kind of the same and still couldn't do the cut thing you did with four layers. To be honest, this is all a bit too fast, and I think you need some experience sewing in order to understand the instructions. I also ended up buying a book and with that I got it right on the 3th attempt. Very interesting how the pattern was created from an existing pair of pants, loved the vid.

Finally someone who has a friend that adds value to a YouTube video...too many videos out there that have ‘best friend guests’ who add nothing to the content. Good job ladies.

What brand of sewing machine do you use?
MADE Everyday (1 month ago)
In this video I'm using a Baby Lock machine called LYRIC. You can read more about it on my site: http://www.madeeveryday.com/2014/11/my-new-sewing-machine-and-how-to-pick-your-own.html/ And you can see more about it my video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRE4TABLswU I also just got a new Baby Lock machine called "Brilliant" and I love it! (it's very similar to the Lyric)...and it's part of a whole series of machines called the "Genuine Series". You can see all the Genuine machines here: https://babylock.com/genuine

I have been using Crayola ultra clean washable markers for washable fabrics. That way the marks just wash out.. Don't use on interfacing if you have to use a damp cloth on it.

Hallo. I'm looking for online fabric store. Can you share with me your experience about it.
Mary Cate O'Malley (1 month ago)
I don't understand how they can fit the same if you cut along the original seam, then add seem allowance when you sew, except for the fact knits are forgiving.
MADE Everyday (1 month ago)
Just add the seam allowance back in when you are drawing your pattern....or as I do sometimes, just draw slightly bigger around the leggings. Leggings are very forgiving, so if you trace around, assuming that there's some room for error you're still going to be fine.

How much fabric would I need to make a 5t size?
Tirsin diana felicia (2 months ago)
Great video ... again 🙂 Maybe next video will teach us how to make maternity leggings 🤔
katiamay1 (2 months ago)
How much fabric is needed if you're not using a t-shirt? They never said how much knit Miranda was using.
MADE Everyday (2 months ago)
It depends on the size leggings you're making, but 1/2-3/4 yd should be plenty
Erin Cronenwett (2 months ago)
Is there a front and back?
Marialla (2 months ago)
Leggings generally have a longer seam from crotch to back than from crotch to front, to give room to cover the booty. I like to insert a little ribbon tag right at the back seam when I complete the waistband, to help me tell which way to put them on.

Where is the best place to buy knit fabric. I looked at hobby lobby, joanns, micheals. I can seem to find it.
Marialla (2 months ago)
Knit fabric should be available at all those stores. Ask a sales clerk if you're having trouble finding it. Ask for "jersey knit" or even "ribbed knit" when making leggings or tee-shirts. You can also tell the sales clerk what it is you're trying to make, and ask them what fabric they recommend.

This product is a product to sexualize women. A very large percentage of men are checking you out , and looking upon you. "SEXUALLY". This is part of the mass conditioning of an immoral society. If you don't believe. Catch men in the act. when your spiritually asleep. You know not of the things of the spirit. Discernment comes from God. Deep calls to deep. I give you a loving admonishment. Not of judgement. Choose Jesus Christ

Please look at the camera when you speak. It's distracting...and us heaing-impared folks need to lipread. You Tube 'captioning' on videos is quite iffy so lipreading is necessary for us
Marialla (2 months ago)
The captioning on this video is nearly perfect, so I don't know why you're complaining. Edit: I've reviewed the captioning some more and did find a few errors, but they are funny and obvious, not something that should hinder the ability to understand what is being said.

Hii I'm using my sewing machine and while using the zig zag stitch it is sewing straight and zig zag, what to do??
Daffy B (6 months ago)
The main oversight may be that the elasticity of t-shirts may not be sufficient for comfy leggings, particularly for toddlers.
MADE Everyday (6 months ago)
It's great if you find t-shirts with a bit of spandex in them, then you've got a beautiful jersey/spandex knit to work with!

MADE Everyday (6 months ago)

Kara Patrick (7 months ago)
Hey I've started to sew and have had trouble with knits I can't seem to get the zigzag stich I end up with bunching or skipping stitches but I'm timing is fine as soon as I switched fabrics no dropped stitches I was using a ballpoint knit needle should I be using a double needle or a walking boot maybe
MADE Everyday (7 months ago)
Hi Kara -- all machines are a little different, so keep experimenting. Sometimes a "stretch" needle works better than a ballpoint if your fabric has spandex content. Also, if you have a stretch stitch (also called a lightning bolt stitch) on your machine, that sometimes works better than a zig zag. Have fun!

I made diagrams of this lesson with instructions. You have totally demystified how to make pants with this leggings tutorial. I am now confident making leggings and pants using both my sewing machine and my serger. Also, thanks for extra bonus of sharing two ways of making the pattern. Ladies, I applaud both of you!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Maria Magdalena Meca (8 months ago)
Hello guys, is anyone here who could tell me the dimensions from newborn to adolescence at leggings, please!? Thank you !
Caroline Dotts (8 months ago)
Dana: I am a brand-new sewer. I bought your shorts pattern and have made several pairs and those have come out pretty well (except for one with the pattern upside down. Oh well, it is the right side when my granddaughter looks down at them!). I thought I was ready for the leggings and I did fine until you put one leg inside the other. When I turned them out to put in the elastic, I had sewn the crotch completely together! What did I do wrong?
MADE Everyday (8 months ago)
Sorry you pieces got mixed up! Walk through the steps again and watch carefully around 11:45 where you sew the crotch. I'm sure it will make sense as you watch it again! (She's sewing on a serger, but it's the same with a sewing machine)
Heart Anderson (9 months ago)
So there was a little ops its all good if your watching this you have a good idea how to measure a waistband. Move on and have fun :D

The serged leggings have one leg shorter than the other... And yes, she did make a mathematical mistake - lots of people can't handle simple math. What matters is the end result and it is not easy being on video.
Elo Baird (10 months ago)
Can you make a video about Shirring like you would on a toddler dress?? Ive been trying to learn how to do it but I have a singer sewing machine with a top loader bobbin, and I still can’t figure out how to do it. :) I love how easy to follow your videos are! Thank you in advance Dana!

Can u sew on a sewing machine with through needles the pins I mean
JUST ART (11 months ago)
Lisa O'Donnell (11 months ago)
The KNIFE gets turned off when hemming the pants on the serger. Please add a text blurb during video so folks don't lop off the leg too short and have to re-do it (or make capris). They may not have extra fabric lying around like Miranda did when she cut the waist band in half cutting out the pattern. ;)
Giant Kids Corner (11 months ago)
very nice machine
