Channel9Productions (6 months ago)
Pro-tip. Put water in the garden hose sprayer and you'll greatly reduce the pumping time. Just take out the inner tube so the water doesn't go into the blood.
chinfat (6 months ago)
That's a great idea. I will try that next time.

Isn't blowing holes in people the most realistic way to do it?
Charlie Dawson (6 months ago)
Hey, if they're not in the guild...
chinfat (6 months ago)
Yes. But then you don't get to make movies or blow any more holes in people anymore.

I’m a big airsofter and I just wanted to let you know you should fill your mag with the bottle nozzle facing down. Or the bottom of the mag facing up. Whichever wording makes more sense. Helps with efficiency of gas. Great squib by the way. I’ll be putting this to use.
chinfat (6 months ago)
That makes sense. Thank you.

How do you stop the blood going into the sprayer when you poor it all down the tubing?
chinfat (9 months ago)
This type of sprayer has a valve. It won't go into the sprayer.

Is it possible to do this whilst walking? I wanna shoot a scene with someone walking towards someone and getting shot
chinfat (10 months ago)
I suppose it would be possible, is you cut to the person being shot only a couple of seconds before they are shot. If you did a Medium Shot, you could have someone walking just outside the camera shot carrying the sprayer. Yeah, I think that would work. I'd say do a couple of screen tests with water instead of blood and see how it works.

It not always that you watch a YouTube tutorial an get to get results exactly as they say. I did all her which was quite simple and the result was amazing. Thank U very much. Now I am working on getting the shirt covered and hoping that's not the hard part. For the items, I has to improvise as long as I had purchased my garden sprayer. I could nor get transparent hose so I used what I had. Thank U

chinfat appreciate it . where to get the rest of the stuff that goes on talent ?
chinfat (1 year ago)
Yes. Just Google "airsoft Desert Eagle blowback". Here is an example: https://www.ebay.com/i/322482910540?chn=ps&dispItem=1
Alex Galapagos (1 year ago)
chinfat appreciate the fast response . are there any airsoft guns that can simulate Desert Eagle in terms of how it retracts while shooting ?

Storm (1 year ago)
I use a stainless steel vest 3mm thick with mortared areas and pyrotechnics, the plastic case kind, they shred shirts no problem, but yep, every actor that's had the thing on goes chalk white. It can't be beaten however for that Hollywood look. Also at £90 for twelve pyros, it isn't cheap, these videos on low cost are great to get round this, nice upload. Head shots are easy enough, you have a bullet hole on the actors head and mo track a cover from a clear area of skin, then a mortared pyro and blood bag behind them, to hit that wall. Another good one is a dummy target launcher, they take a 6mm blank, you then place a blood bag over the end and cover that with a sheet of tinfoil, and hide the device on the actors side in a custom belt, the pin is pulled bac kand a builders nail placed in to act like a brace, this has string tied to it, then when pulled out the pin shoots forward hitting the blank and boom, the blood sprays in a vapour mist through the precut shirt etc.We used to cut a cross with scissors into the clothing and paper glue, ( Pritt-stick) a section of kitchen tissue paper on the (back of the fabric not tissue) to seal the cut marks, it's very effective for a shotgun type death. if you don't have post effects like mocha or AE, the head shot one can be done via clever editing, the elevator scene in 1987's Untouchables was done in camera, the bad guy points the gun and fires a blank round, in post they cut on the frame right after the flash, and to the actor with a hole prosthetic in place already, the blood is then popped up onto the back wall of the lift, easier still is to have the blood already there, put the right sound on it and it'll do the job.The viewer's brain will fill in the blanks so to speak.

Hi! Do you have any ideas as to making this applicable to a scene on stage? I need characters to be able to walk around with a squib machine through a whole scene before getting shot.

awesome vid!! Although i cringed at how much gaffers tape you used... that stuffs hella expensive! lol
Horror 365 (1 year ago)
Haha love it! Keep it up man! Indie film for life!!
chinfat (1 year ago)
It is expensive. With all the money I saved on the squibs, I could afford to use all that gaffer's tape!!! JK. A less expensive way is seriously to use saran wrap around the body. Works like a charm. Actually, it works better. I should have done that sooner.
Thanks, man. I've been looking for something like this to help with my Indie film series, Yesterday's Gone Zombie series. Season 1 episode 1 comes to YouTube in 2017. We'll be using it for season 2 for sure.

Could you use a larger tube for a larger result? or is the outcome not going to change so much if you use a larger tube?
chinfat (2 years ago)
Hmmm... good idea. Not sure on that one. I would recommend testing it out with a larger tube and see what happens. You might also need a larger garden hose sprayer, however.

Thanks for the concern man, I found some similar parts on ebay, some of them have different names over here so I think that's why I was struggling a little bit haha
chinfat (2 years ago)
Have you checked to see if the parts can be ordered online? Or is that a difficult task as well?
BecauseMovie (2 years ago)
I want to make sure that there's also a large bloodstain on the shirt like for a shotgun for instance... is that possible to do without exploding packets of fake blood since it's so dangerous ? You didn't have that much blood on your shirt.
BecauseMovie (2 years ago)
Looks great! But will the tube actually leave a lot of blood on the person and will leave a large stain on the shirt ?
chinfat (2 years ago)
You can fill the tube with a lot more blood and make the hole a bit bigger. I've done a shotgun blast with it that works quite well. Check out this video at 9:25. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ileW_bgxS4M&index=12&list=PLOVqmUlWq2N8LSe11YIeW5wqIgDJJspm1
Tyler Minoske (2 years ago)
I want to start making short films and I need guns for my scenes and I was wondering what is the difference between a blank gun and a blank gun with an orange tip. I am looking for a gun that looks like the real deal when you shoot it but nothing comes out.
Tyler Minoske (2 years ago)
+chinfat ok thanks for the help and advice I'll be sure to check up on everything!
chinfat (2 years ago)
Some of the best and safest ones are airsoft guns. They have replicas that look incredibly real of almost any gun type. You'll have to check on the laws in your area, but for movies, most people simply paint or remove the orange tips. Just make sure to get permission to shoot your film at the locations you use. We've had people call the police and say there was some psycho running rampant with a gun, when it was just an actor.

Kill her, jerris haha
OSD (2 years ago)
Who would actually use firecrackers or cherry bombs for a squib? sounds like such a bad idea.
chinfat (2 years ago)
It is a bad idea, if you're attempting without experience. Professional productions often use explosive squibs, with metal plates on the person being shot.
Andrew McMillan (2 years ago)
Yay! Maybe I can get this to work for me lol

Ndala PROD (2 years ago)
Where were you hiding lol, have been looking to this kind of tutorial, you are a professional ,
Christos Ioannou (2 years ago)
A few questions, 1. Did you add in the gunshot sound and remove the tube hiss post-production? 2. Did you film a shot of you without the damaged shirt, then cut to the shot of the cut shirt, or how did you go from the regular short to the one with the tube? 3. How would you do multiple shots at the same time? 4. What would be the best way to make an effect like this, but using a prop knife (or any other close-range weapon)?
Christos Ioannou (2 years ago)
+chinfat thanks!
chinfat (2 years ago)
+Christos Ioannou 1. Yes. A sound mix removed the hiss sound and replaced it with a gun shot and body hit. 2. Watch part 2 of the tutorial and it shows how to remove the pre-ripped shirt. 3. That would really require professional squibs and machinery. 4. Not sure on that one.

MoreyFilms (2 years ago)
Best blood squib rig tutorial and explanation on YouTube. Seriously man your awesome! Any way you could set multiple off at once? And would this work with flour/powder to make a Saving Private Ryan style bullet hit?
ESCORONIC (1 year ago)
chinfat how can I do it multiple times
chinfat (2 years ago)
+MoreyFilms Haven't tried it with multiple at the same time. I assume it would work. I'm sure the flour/powder method would work just fine. I'd recommend running a test before giving it a go on film.
David Secrest (2 years ago)
personally I would use another pipe clamp on the plug just so it doesn't accidentally turn into a projectile, I would probably hot glue it also.
Wesley Creekmore (3 years ago)
Thank you for the detailed explanation.Thinking of shooting Zombies in our Halloween event and now we can thanks to you.
chinfat (3 years ago)
+Wesley Creekmore Awesome. Good luck. Post some footage if you do it. I would love to see it.
couldn;t you have just went up through your pants instead of wrapping the coil around your body?  also where did you get the blowback gun?
chinfat (3 years ago)
+Auset McChristion-Thomas It's an airsoft gun that I bought at a local store.
+chinfat LOL...where did you get the gun?  btw this is a genius method

SlashMan.EXE (3 years ago)
Right on. The effect looks great, and is totally practical.
rougeaussie (3 years ago)
How would you suggest building a squib for slicing the inside of an open hand, I would prefer the blood to ooze out slowly - rather than really fast. I'm guessing the answer is hiding a thinner tube with lots and lots of make up?
rougeaussie (3 years ago)
Interesting, thanks mate, I'll keep looking into it.
chinfat (3 years ago)
Geesh… not sure on that one. That would likely take a make-up artist. I've seen people do a fishing line going under the make-up and then when the string is pulled, it rips open the makeup and looks like flesh being torn open.
Safety Lucas (3 years ago)
Personally I would just connect the tube to the end of another airsoft gun. That way the system is much smaller and doesn't require lots of pumping.
Samuel Schild (3 years ago)
Thank you so much for uploading this. This is one of the most accessible and easy to understand film tutorials I've watched. I already built my squib rig and plan on shooting this week.
chinfat (3 years ago)
Awesome. I'd love to see your project when it's finished, if it's publicly accessible.
Luke Donkor (3 years ago)
On a budget
Luke Donkor (3 years ago)
What kind of camera should I use?
chinfat (3 years ago)
If you are on a budget, the Canon 7D with a more affordable lens kit might run you around $1000. If you can afford it, the Canon 5D Mark III is a fantastic camera, which runs around $3000 with a basic lens kit. As you are able to afford better lenses (I recommend the Rokinon Cine Lens series), your images will look better and better. Let me know if you have any questions.
Crysis (4 years ago)
I think they should use squibs in more films, It's way better and interesting to look at then CGI. Nice work. Keep it up :)
DigiFootage Channel (4 months ago)
I think CGI looks even better when done correctly. Unfortunately, many indie filmmakers do not use it correctly. Same as squibs. Squibs can look absolutely awful when used improperly.
goofyfoot2001 (5 months ago)
I think the asswipe that put CGI in the original Star Trek series should be tarred and feathered.
Storm (1 year ago)
That's because there is no real life basis for comparison regarding giant killer robots.
irllcd13 (1 year ago)
Same with muzzle flashes. blood spatter and muzzle flashes are some of the fakest looking CGI there is. I'm not sure why they can't do something like that but they can do city destruction and giant robots.
+Crysis die hard and terminator too. The old ones.
